Dispersion of rigid line inclusions as stiffeners and shear band instability triggers
A dispersion of stiff and thin (‘rigid line’) inclusions (RLIs) in a matrix material may result beneficial for stiffening in the elastic range, but might be detrimental to strength, as material instabilities may be triggered by inclusions when the matrix is brought to a viscoplastic-damaging state. This dual role of RLIs is investigated by means of the embedded reinforcement model. Validated against available analytical predictions, this numerical model is employed to assess the roles of RLIs’ orientation, interaction, volume fraction, and distribution, considering up to 1500 inclusions. When the matrix material deforms inelastically, RLIs produce stress concentrations that promote the nucleation of shear bands. These are characterized at collapse for many distributions of RLIs, showing that their effects range from almost negligible to a disrupting alteration of the dominant failure mechanism. In the latter case, it is shown that the dominant shear bands can be fragmented by RLIs into a mosaic of tiny localization bands. These results offer new insights into energy dissipation mechanisms of reinforced materials, as they are promoted or inhibited by the interactions of rigid line inclusions
Microdosimetric Measurements in Gamma and neutron Fields with a Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter Based on a Gas Electron Multiplier
A multi-element tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC), based on a single gas electron multiplier (GEM) foil of standard geometry, has been constructed with 16 cylindrical sensitives volumes. In this article, the design of this novel counter is described and first microdosimetric measurements are presented. To study the response of the GEM-TEPC to both low and high linear energy transfer radiation fields, the microdosimetric spectra due to a (137)Cs gamma-ray source and to fast neutrons from (7)Li(d,n)(8)Be reaction have been measured using pure propane gas at low pressure, in order to simulate a tissue site of about 1 μm equivalent size. The comparison with spectra measured with a spherical TEPC and with a mini-TEPC demonstrates promising properties for application of the GEM-TEPC for microdosimetric applications

Interactions between multiple rigid lamellae in a ductile metal matrix: Shear band magnification and attenuation in localization patterns
A ductile matrix material containing an arbitrary distribution of parallel and stiff lamellar ('rigid-line') inclusions is considered, subject to a prestress state provided by a simple shear aligned parallel to the inclusion lines. Because the lamellae have negligible thickness, the simple shear prestress state remains uniform and its amount can be high enough to drive the matrix material on the verge of ellipticity loss. Close to this critical stage, a uniform remote Mode I perturbation realizes shear band formation, growth, interaction, thickening or thinning. This two-dimensional problem is solved through the derivation of specific boundary integral equations, holding for a nonlinear elastic matrix material uniformly prestressed; the related numerical treatment is specifically tailored to capture the stress singularity present at the inclusion tips. Results show how complex localized deformation patterns form, so explaining features related to the failure mechanisms of ductile materials reinforced with stiff and thin inclusions. In particular, the influence of the inclusion distribution on the shear bands pattern is disclosed. Conditions for the magnification (the attenuation) of the localized deformations are revealed, fostering the progress (the setback) of the failure process
