Exploring the development of environmentally sustainable products through reward-based crowdfunding

Literature on crowdfunding is rapidly expanding by exploring typologies of crowdfunding projects, success factors of the projects, and how success factors might change depending on the project typologies. Firstly, based on the literature that suggests crowdfunding platforms provide a good alternative for financing innovative ideas, the present exploratory research aims to analyze how the crowdfunding instrument has been used in supporting the development of sustainable products. Secondly, based on researches that focus on success factors of crowdfunding campaigns, the present work aims to explore the success determinants of projects developing sustainable products. The results of the investigation show that the impact of crowdfunding in supporting the development and commercialization of sustainable products is quite marginal and only a few successful projects showed a high impact potential to contribute to the pathway to more sustainability by directing influencing incumbents. Moreover, through an in-depth examination of the campaigns aimed at developing sustainable products, we found that adopting just a generic keyword (i.e. sustainable, ecologic) to describe a sustainable product might weaken the success probability of the campaign. In light of the results achieved, the paper formulates some managerial suggestions illustrating how crowdfunding platforms could stimulate the collection of more environmentally friendly projects

The role of consumer trade-offs in limiting the transition towards circular economy: The case of brand and plastic concern

Several green consumer behavior models have tried to explain how individual behaviours interrelate with green consumption. However, the growing environmental awareness of consumers as well as the complexity of environmental challenges requires additional research to explore how consumers deals with such logics. Better understanding of the complexity of consumer decision making process and how conflicting logics can generate tensions in a purchasing decision is detrimental in the transition towards a more circular economy. This paper attempts to examine the links between a set of key factors such as recycled material, brand loyalty and plastic concern able to predict a consumers’ behavior model. In details, with the help of a self-administered questionnaire, we conducted a 2 × 2 experiment between subjects involving a sample of 1000 individuals, representative of Italian and Spanish population from 18 to 75 years old. Data acquired were then analysed applying Structural Equation Modelling. Results returned convey how recycled product and plastic concern have a direct influence on consumers’ attitude towards the product and its perceived value, thus influencing their buying behaviours. Moreover, results suggest also that plastic concern negatively mediates the positive effect of recycled material on product attitude and its perceived value. In light of such results, conclusions suggest how to develop green marketing campaigns and communication strategies able to raise green behaviours

Digitally-enabled social innovation. Mapping discourses on an emergent social technology

    No full text
The growing number of digitally-enabled social innovation initiatives have recently attracted social scholars’ interest; and required an attentive consideration the complex entanglements between innovation, social agency and power. This paper contributes to the debate on this juvenile research field by analysing the different conceptualisations, cultural framing, and socio-political entanglements of digitally-enabled social innovation. It adopts a Foucauldian perspective in order to analyse the diverse discourses on socially transformative digital initiatives that work as ‘social technologies’ and support distinctive power/knowledge nexuses within diverse coalitions of actors. To this end, the paper applies a combination of bibliographic and text-mining methodologies to a large number of academic publications (191 scientific papers) and grey literature (1948 EU-project reports). Retrieved data are elaborated to map the emerging discursive field and identify a genealogy of associated concepts, the distribution of co-incidences and linkages with other concepts, and their ideological layers

Localized modes in monoatomic and diatomic chains due to the anharmonicity

    No full text
Intrinsic localized modes due to the anharmonicty are discussed in detail in the case of monoatomic chains considering a finite (even or odd) number of particles interacting with nearest neighbours harmonic and quartic anharmonic force constants. We find odd parity and even parity localized modes above the maximum harmonic frequency in the monoatomic case. These modes persist modifying the anharmonic force constant at the center of the chain, but their envelope shape becomes double peaked. Preliminary resylts for diatomic chains are also presented. In tis case we find odd localized modes above the maximum harmonic frequency and in the gap between the acoustic and optic continuum

Hyperconnected, receptive and do-it-yourself city. An investigation into the European imaginary of crowdsourcing for urban governance

This paper critically explores the construction and diffusion of the socio-technical imaginary of crowdsourcing for public governance in Europe via a quali-quantitative analysis of academic publications, research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission (EC) and local initiatives. Building upon the increasing narrative of digital social participation that describes crowdsourcing processes as short ways towards democratisation of public decision-making processes, our research describes the trends and threats associated with the “hyperconnected city” imaginary advanced by (part of) scholarly research and EC policy documents and projects. We show how, while these last describe digital-supported participation processes as (at least potentially) able to bootstrap an open governance agenda, local urban initiatives suggest the need to question this technology-optimistic imaginary. A critical analysis of crowdsourcing for public governance prototyped and piloted in some European cities makes it evident that at local level, alternative imaginaries are emerging. We describe them in this paper as the “receptive city” (often adopted by public institutions and administration), and the “do-it-yourself city” (referring to the critical perspective of (digital) social activists) imaginaries, both emerging from local-based experiences and debates; and clarify their convergence and divergence how these differs from the above-mentioned “hyperconnected city” imaginary prefigured by EC guidelines. The conclusive section further expands the analysis prefiguring future research possibilities promises in terms of local experiences influencing the future internet for society and digital agenda for Europe

Surgical approaches to tumors of the anterior gyrus cinguli.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the gyrus cinguli are deep-seated, and may require a variety of surgical options. We focused on anterior tumors, which have specific anatomic and surgical features. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate different approaches and indications through detailed description and a review of our experience. METHODS: These approaches include unilateral interhemispheric or combined: bilateral interhemispheric, unilateral plus superior frontal gyrectomy, or unilateral plus frontal polectomy. The relevance of this retrospective analysis is stressed by the extremely limited literature in this regard. RESULTS: In the past 5 years we operated on 38 patients with gliomas. We compared the following variables: location (perigenual, prerolandic), pathology (glioblastoma, other gliomas), size ( or =4 cm), extension (unilateral, bilateral), and approach (unilateral interhemispheric, combined). The only significant association we found was between tumor location (perigenual) and bilateral extension (P < .01). However, combined approaches were adopted only slightly more frequently in this region than in the prerolandic area, and this resulted in a lower rate of total removal (33\% vs 76\%, P < .01). Gross total removal was achieved in 28 cases (66\%) and was significantly associated with combined approaches (77\% vs 50\%, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The choice of a combined approach to anterior gyrus cinguli tumors is critical to improving the quality of resection in selected cases. We recommend a combined approach in the surgical treatment of large tumors of the perigenual area
