The role of digital institutional repositories in promoting scholarly communication: A study of the attitudes of faculty members at the University of Constantine 2
With the developments in information and communication technology, especially the Internet and accompanying tools, researchers have started to focus on free publication of their research studies and facilitate their access locally and remotely. This has led to a new approach to scholarly communication under the digital institutional repositories and the open access to information. These are used by academic institutions at the beginning of the third millennium as a means to highlight its scientific activity and preserve its intellectual memory. Researchers have invested this new medium to present their research and scientific studies using self-archiving. This has the greatest impact in overcoming financial and legal restrictions imposed by commercial publishers therefore, creating a new concept to scholarly communication and provided valuable opportunities for researchers to introduce their intellectual production on a large scale and increase their citation rates. It also allowed the university to identify its intellectual assets with the aim of achieving local and international visibility and increasing its impact factor to improve its ranking among higher education institutions. This study aims to investigate the opinions of faculty members at the University of Constantine2, Abdelhamid Mahri, to learn about their attitudes towards academic digital repositories and their readiness to contribute their scientific production. The study used the descriptive approach to data collection. The findings revealed the willingness of the respondents to deposit their work in institutional repositories, but some expressed concerns about piracy, infringement of their intellectual rights and not being considered in their promotion to higher academic rank
Social Media Use in Algerian Universities: University of Constantine 2 Case Study
Social media technologies initially used for socializing, and entertainment have in recent years
expanded their reaches into learning activities providing an open space for students’ engagement.
The positive effect of such technologies on pedagogy is to make learning applicable to the cyber
environment to achieve independent and collaborative learning. Students learn to communicate and
collaborate electronically. This requires rethinking the way pedagogical activities are carried out
to develop synergistic learning relationships to create the best learning model in line with this new
educational paradigm.
This paper investigates Algerian students’ engagement to understand the developmental
implications of academic achievement. The author seeks to advance the use of instructional
interactions in two ways: i: enhancing the academic validity of social networking, ii: making the
link to students’ collaborative learning explicit. Data is collected from 300 students. Findings show
that social media are used for a multitude of purposes and Facebook is most popular

The digital revolution is transforming education industry worldwide. In recent years, extensive debate and research are exploring digital technology, focusing on developing a clear understanding of its capabilities as a platform for making social sciences and humanities applicable to the cyber environment of the twenty first century. The widespread use of social media supported by a rapid growth of the digital culture is making learning ubiquitous by creating, capturing and sharing knowledge. This is enhancing students’ engagement and learning efficiency. It is also improving the learner-instructor interaction by engaging students in a more meaningful participation in their own education and academic achievement. To accomplish this, both students and instructors need to have the skills and expertise in capturing the positive effect of the digital technology and engaging in the new learning environment.
This paper reflects on the new learning environment supported by a curriculum reflecting the digital technology era.
It discusses how students at the department of archives at the University of Constantine 2 build on the digital capabilities of social media to engage in independent learning by creating and sharing knowledge
Measuring the Value of Open Access ETDS in Algerian Digital Repositories: An Evaluative Study
Over the past years, grey literature in general and electronic digital theses (EDTs) in particular have been becoming more and more digital. Algeria is ranked first among Arab countries with fifteen (15) digital repositories. EDTs represent a large percentage of the repositories' content. Fourteen (14) of these repositories have policies for the collection of theses and dissertations, as well as other types of documents such as articles and reports. The usage of ETDs by undergraduates has been increasing exponentially. This study aims to highlight and evaluate the tools used to measure the usage of ETDs in the digital repositories, their availability and the evaluation methodology.16Special Winter344
