«Il sale della satira è il condimento della commedia». Elements in the European Mock-Heroic Poem

    No full text
The focus of this paper is the relationship between mock-heroic and satire. The analysis will deal with the most important satirical and mock-heroic authors in Europe : Tassoni, Boileau, Pope and Parini. The purpose is to prove how the satirical element is an essential part of the genre invented by Tassoni. In the second part of the paper we will try to demonstrate that the satire becomes the main mode of the comic in mock-heroic poems after the Secchia rapita. By analyzing chronologically the most representative works, our article proposes a reflection about the genre and the evolution of its characteristics during almost two centuries

Near-infrared properties of 12 globular clusters towards the inner bulge of the Galaxy

    No full text
We present near-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams and physical parameters for a sample of 12 galactic globular clusters located towards the inner bulge region. For each cluster we provide measurements of the reddening, distance and photometric metallicity and of the luminosity of the horizontal branch red clump and the red giant branch bump and tip. The sample discussed here, together with that presented in Valenti, Ferraro & Origlia (2007), represents the largest homogeneous catalogue of bulge globular clusters (comprising ~80 per cent of the entire bulge cluster population) ever studied

Prenatal THC exposure permanently disturbs kynurenic acid and glutamate levels and amplifies the responsivity to an acute kynurenine challenge in the rat prefrontal cortex

Throughout the world, cannabis remains one of the most widely used illicit drugs during pregnancy (Porath-Waller, 2015). The main psychoactive component of marijuana (delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol, THC) passes through the placenta, and its use is correlated with early physiological effects in the offspring. Neurobehavioural and cognitive impairments have been reported in several longitudinal studies on children and adolescents prenatally exposed to marijuana (Calvigioni et al., 2014), and a link to psychiatric disorders has been proposed (Jutras-Aswad et al., 2009; Mathews et al., 2014). Prenatal exposure to cannabinoids induces cognitive deficits in rat offspring (Ferraro et al., 2009) and is associated with alterations in cortical/hippocampal glutamate and GABA levels (Antonelli et al., 2005, Beggiato et al., 2017). Interestingly, the deleterious effects of cannabinoids on cognitive functions are similar to those observed in adult rats prenatally exposed to (L)-kynurenine (KYN), which is the direct bioprecursor of kynurenic acid (KYNA), a neuroactive metabolite of tryptophan degradation (Pocivavsek et al., 2014). We therefore investigated whether alterations in KYNA levels in the rat brain might play a role in the long-term consequences of prenatal cannabinoid exposure. Pregnant Wistar rats were treated daily with THC [5 mg/kg or vehicle (sesame oil) by oral gavage] from gestational day (GD) 5 through GD 20. One adolescent [postnatal day 35-45] and one adult male rat per litter was then used to determine the extracellular levels of KYNA and glutamate before and after a challenge with KYN (5 mg/kg i.p.) by in vivo microdialysis in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Compared to vehicle-treated controls, extracellular basal KYNA levels were higher in adolescent and adult rats that had been prenatally treated with THC (p<0.01; p<0.05, respectively). These rats also had lower extracellular glutamate levels than respective controls (p<0.01; p<0.05, respectively). Following a challenge with KYN, extracellular KYNA levels increased in both adolescent groups (i.e. vehicle- and THC-treated; p<0.05) Interestingly, this effect was more pronounced in adult rats which had been prenatally exposed to THC. KYN also caused a trend towards a reduction in extracellular glutamate levels in vehicle-treated adolescent and adult rats. We propose that these permanent alterations in KYNA and glutamate signalling in the mPFC of prenatally THC-exposed rats could be relevant for cognitive dysfunction. Our results are also in line with the hypothesis that a “double-hit” may precipitate psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia later in life

This article focuses on the evolution of the thinking of De Sanctis about the Renaissance and the Orlando Furioso in three steps: the early Neapolitan lessons, the Lezioni Zurighesi and the History of Italian Literature. The analysis deals with three key aspects: the relationship between epic and chivalry, the unity of plot, and form. The purpose is to demonstrate how the opinions of De Sanctis change less radically than we may imagine, as some fixed points remain unchanged throughout time. What significantly changes is the perspective through which these points are interpreted

CXCL12 prolongs naive CD4+ T lymphocytes survival via activation of PKA, CREB and Bcl2 and BclXl up-regulation

    No full text
Background: Naive T lymphocytes recirculate through the body, traveling from secondary lymphoid organs through tissues and via lymphatic vessels and peripheral blood into other secondary lymphoid organs and into the bone marrow. In these tissues, lymphocytes are exposed to the chemokine CXCL12 which is abundantly produced in bone marrow and in lymph nodes by stromal cells. CXCL12 is known to drive lymphocytes chemotaxis and, in cells types such as stem cells, an antiapopototic effect has been described. Methods: Here we analyzed the effect of CXCL12 exposure on naive CD4+ T lymphocytes purified from peripheral blood by immunomagnetic negative isolation and cultured in a nutrient poor medium. We also studied, mainly by western blot analysis, the signaling pathways involved in CXCL12 action on naive CD4+ T lymphocytes. Results: We found that CXCL12-exposed cells survived longer than untreated ones and this prolonged lifespan was specific for resting naive lymphocytes, while in vitro activated lymphoblasts died rapidly despite CXCL12 treatment. We demonstrated that the increased percentage of living cells observed upon CXCL12 administration was not due to induction of proliferation but to a prosurvival effect of this chemokine. Moreover, our data suggest that this prosurvival effect on naive CD4+ T lymphocytes might likely be mediated by PKA-dependent CREB activation and consequent increased expression of the antiapoptotic factors Bcl2 and BclXl. Conclusions: This newly reported activity of CXCL12 might contribute to the maintenance of the naive T lymphocytes pool in vivo, which is needed to ensure a proper immune response to new antigens.
