Common Phenomena. Territorial and Urban Crisis in the International Context

    No full text

Dromoscape. (Brenner) Motorway as a Symbolic Form

The Brenner Motorway is one of the most important parts of the European road network: 314 kilometres long, it climbs more than 1,300 metres between the Brenner Pass, where it connects with the Austrian Autobahn of the same name, and Campogalliano, where it meets the Autostrada del Sole. The E45, the European route to which it formally belongs, reaches the Strait of Messina on Italian territory and the Kattegat Strait beyond the Alps, connecting two crucial Mediterranean and North Sea links. The subject of much research before and after its final completion in 1974, the Brenner Motorway deserves to be studied as architecture, researching the quality of its plan, section and elevation. From this perspective, the bridges, viaducts, tunnels, junctions, tollgates, rest and service stations, which follow one another along the original road, appear as the parts of a unified work, designed to measure itself against the scales of territory and landscape. In order to understand this infrastructure and to handle these scales, the first volume of the research conducted on the Brenner Motorway by scholars of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at Politecnico di Milano holds a selection of photographs taken between 2021 and 2022 by Giovanni Hänninen. Hovering by the motorway, the photographer’s lens selected parts of the Po Valley, the Adige and Isarco valleys, and the Alps, making the lists, indexes and contents of the maps to be represented to lead the Brenner Motorway along the complex path of ecological transition

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM OF BLOOD PRESSURE AND ITS NEUROHUMORAL REGULATION IN OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME Background. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a treatable cause of secondary and resistant hypertension, that must be taken in serious consideration to better estimate the cardiovascular (CV) risk in hypertensive (HT) patients. Untreated OSAS can worsen the CV function through several mechanisms, including sympathetic activation, oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Although the blood pressure control is significantly improved by continous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the activation of the renin angiotensin system (RAAS) in OSAS patients and its modification after CPAP are still an object of debate. Objective. To evaluate 1) the prevalence of OSAS, detected by polysomnography, in a cohort of resistant HT or moderate-severe HT patients, 2) the association between OSAS and the circadian rhytm of blood pressure assessed by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), 3) the association between OSAS and plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma aldosterone and urinary catecholamines, 4) the effect of CPAP on circadian rhytm of blood pressure and previous neurohumoral parameters. Methods. 17 consecutive hypertensive patients admitted at the Hypertension Clinic of S. Giuseppe Hospital, Milan, were screened for OSAS and circadian rhythm of blood pressure between July 2007 and August 2010. RAAS and catecholamins were assessed at the study entry. Among OSAS patients RAAS and catecholamines were further assesed one day after the initiation of CPAP. Results. Among the 17 enrolled patients, 13 (76.5%) resulted affected by OSAS. A dipper profile was observed in only 30% of the 10 OSAS patients evaluated by ABPM. PRA (ng/ml/min) was lower in non-OSAS compared to OSAS patients (0.5 + 0.2 vs 1.6 + 0.7 in mild OSAS and 1.5 + 2.3 in severe OSAS, p < 0.05). Catecholamines (mcg/8h) were lower in non-OSAS compared to severe OSAS (11 + 1 vs 17 + 7, p < 0.05). 24-hours systolic blood pressure (24h SBP), sleep systolic blood pressure (sleep SBP) and sleep heart rate (sleep HR) were lowered after the first day of CPAP (24h SBP 135 + 18 vs 140 + 17 mmHg, p < 0.05; sleep SBP 132 + 20 vs 138 + 19 mmHg; sleep HR 62 + 5 vs 65 + 6). CPAP was not associated with significant modifications of neurohumoral parameters. Conclusions. OSAS is highly prevalent in hypertensive population and it is associated with a non-dipper profile, a greater activation of the RAAS and the sympathetic system. CPAP improves the blood pressure control, probably via multiple pathways more complex then simple RAAS and sympathetic system

    The Donizetti Theatre (1896-2016)

The Fondazione Teatro Donizetti has enabled Università degli Studi di Bergamo and Politecnico di Milano to document, with new research, the relationship between the City of Bergamo and its most emblematic public building. This journey was undertaken concurrently with the restoration and recovery works on the Theatre named after the Bergamo composer Gaetano Donizetti. The specific intention of this book is to witness how the history of this architectural complex, both majestic and fragile, has been shaped by the enduring presence of a construction site that, in many aspects, seems endless. The book analyzes the events that have accompanied the evolution of the city’s society and culture, documenting the continuous interplay between the theatre and urban scenes. Over the past two centuries, the Donizetti Theatre’s passage through recurring moments of crisis serves as a formidable lesson, which is worth returning to after the tragedies of the pandemic and the celebrations for Bergamo/Brescia, the Italian capital of culture in 2023. Articulated like a theatrical work, the second act of the monograph is dedicated to the events included in 120 years of history between 1896, when the project for the new monumental façade was carried out, and 2016, when the most recent restoration campaign began. The contribution highlights the events of a complex construction site in which the contributions, realized or only designed, of important protagonists of architectural culture alternate: from the Romans Pietro Via and Marcello Piacentini to the Lombards Francesco Domenighini, Alziro Bergonzo, Stefano Zanchi, Pino and Attilio Pizzigoni, Luciano Galmozzi, Eugenio Mandelli, Giorgio Dall'Acqua. Above all, Pino Pizzigoni stands out, who, with Galmozzi and Mandelli, sets up an experimental version of the refurbishment of the theatrical space, in which constructive, symbolic and linguistic aspects merge in an objectively masterful synthesis
