    No full text
Michael Novak, at the time of this interview, was an associate professor of philosophy and religious studies at the State University of New York-Westbury and author of The Rise of the Unmeltable Ethnic. Novak believes that the tragedy of the American education system is that it separates people from their roots and creates a schism between the educated and the uneducated. In this interview with WTMJ-TV host Jim Peck, Novak describes what he sees as two major trends on the current American scene: the increasing growth of metropolitan government coupled with a general move toward family and community self-sufficiency.GrayscaleSoun

ABSTRACTPurpose: The article explores the life and work of the Slovenian author Lojze Novak in order to get more recognition of the author in Slovenia. The article initially deals with the publishing activities of Argentina\u27s diaspora. Methodology/approach: In order to create the bibliography the following bibliographic methods were used: searching and collecting the Novak´s works, bibliographic description as well as the arrangement of his opus. Novak´s works were obtained from Argentina, specifically from the Tine Debeljak legacy, Novak’s descendants, his contemporaries, friends and acquaintances, and from the National and University Library (NUK). Bibliographic descriptions are based on the primary documents therefore the data are accurate and verified. Bibliographic descriptions follow the Guidelines for the application of the ISBDs to the description of component parts (1998). Novak\u27s personal bibliography includes 60 units arranged into published (52) and unpublished (8) works. Published works which consist of works of fiction (46) and nonfiction (6) are arranged chronologically by the publication year whereas within each year they are organised alphabetically. Novak´s biobibliography which includes 6 works and is arranged chronologically has also been produced through this process. Results: Since the author Lojze Novak has not won recognition in Slovenia yet, he has been introduced to our country by the personal bibliography and biobibliography that resulted from this research. Originality/practical implications: By doing the research into Novak´s opus eight of his unpublished works in manuscript form were discovered and included in his primary personal bibliography. It is therefore a comprehensive bibliography in the field.IZVLEČEKNamen: Prispevek želi predstaviti življenje in delo slovenskega pisatelja Lojzeta Novaka ter pripomoči k njegovi boljši prepoznavnosti.

This project is a translation of twenty short stories by Helga Novak, a contemporary author born in eastern Berlin. The stories were all written between 1965 and 1980. They are divided into four sections: Fish Factory, Carpet Weaving, Traveling, and Sojourn in a Crazy House. The first three sections consist of very short stories, approximately one page long, taken from Novak\u27s collection called Geselliges Beisammensein (Social Gathering). The last section is made up of three longer stories, each about 10 pages long, taken from Aufenthalt in einem irren Haus (Sojourn in a Crazy House), which represent some of Novak\u27s later work. I have also included a translator\u27s introduction, relating some of my experiences in translating a longer work and my position in the discourse of translation theory

The Master\u27s Thesis deals with the reading literacy of fourth-grade students of a lower educational standard. It consists of two key parts, the theoretical part and the empirical part. At the beginning of the theoretical part, reading and reading strategies are defined in more detail, followed by the following topics: definition of the building blocks of reading literacy and a detailed explanation of each building block, the model of easy reading and some of its most essential aspects are also presented. Children with intellectual disabilities participated in the research of the Master\u27s Thesis, therefore one of the chapters in the theoretical part is dedicated to them as well as to the adapted educational program of upbringing and education with a lower educational standard attended by the children involved in the research. The concept of a picture book is also specifically defined and presented, which is joined by the presentation of a series of picture books about a little cockerel. The theoretical part briefly touches on the author and illustrator of the Little Cockerel picture book series. The empirical part covers and presents the entire Master\u27s Thesis research implementation plan, it also presents the picture books of the Little Cockerel series, adapted according to the easy reading model, which represents the main research instrument of the Master\u27s Thesis. Also presented are the results of the research, a precise and extensive interpretation and analysis of these, which showed that the children involved in the research are well-read and literate, regardless of their reduced intellectual abilities and other deficits they have

V pričujočem magistrskem delu avtorica raziskuje čustveno doživljanje prve nosečnosti, poroda in poporodnega obdobja pri materah. V teoretičnem delu magistrskega dela predstavi ključne dogodke in fiziološki proces nosečnosti. In the present master\u27s thesis, the emotional experiences of first pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period of mothers who give birth are explored. The theoretical part of the master\u27s thesis presents the key events and the physiological process of pregnancy. The focus is on the experience of the pregnancy by a first-time mother, changes in her brain, body, hormonal changes and related emotional changes, and mood swings. Moreover, the author focuses on the acceptance of the physical and emotional changes, and the importance of the partner’s support during pregnancy. The importance of establishing a relationship with the child during pregnancy as well as the relationship between a pregnant woman and her mother during pregnancy are described in detail. The author also touches upon the emotional and mental distress that can occur during pregnancy. In addition, the importance of preparation for childbirth and the physiological course of childbirth are presented, as well as health measures in the event of congenital anomalies. The author also mentions the importance of a partner\u27s presence at birth. The last part of the theoretical part describes the postpartum period and related physical and emotional changes. The author presents breastfeeding as a crucial and basic contact with the child. Lastly, the relationships between the mother and her partner and child are described. Using a qualitative phenomenological methodology, the connection between pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period of first-time mothers was investigated. The study included six women who gave birth for the first time more than six months ago and less than four years ago. Five women gave vaginal birth, and one had an emergency caesarean birth. Based on the findings of the interviews carried out by the author, it is determined how women experienced their first pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, and how this experience could be further improved and facilitated. The results show that women mostly accepted their changing bodies and received a lot of support from their partners during pregnancy. Partner support has shown to be crucial during childbirth. The research showed that the first contact with the child was a surprise for most of the participants and they did not experience a surge of positive emotions when they first met the child. The results also show that women were not sufficiently prepared for the postpartum period and were surprised by it especially due to strong emotions and their own experiences. During this period, for most of the participants, the partner\u27s support proved to be central to overcoming the challenges

U arhivu Mediteranskog instituta Grga Novak na Hvaru čuva se nekoliko neuočenih dokumenata koji osvjetljavaju život Grge Novaka, jednog od najznamenitijih Dalmatinaca XX. stoljeća, arheologa i historičara, pisca dvosveščane Prošlosti Dalmacije i trosveščane Povijesti Splita.1 U drugom, kraćem dijelu studije autorica analizira i pismo Miroslava Krleže predsjedniku JAZU koje osvjetljava Krležin položaj u Titovoj Jugoslaviji. Analiziraju se neki aspekti Krležinog epistolarnog stila. In this paper the author presents and interprets various so far completely unknown and unpublished documents which belong to the archive of Grga Novak in Hvar and to the archive of Miroslav Krleža in Zagreb. Among these documents special attention was paid to a very brief but realistic police description of several outstanding Croatian scientists who, during the Second World War, were active as the teaching staff in the field of humanities at the University of Zagreb. The author also made an attempt to point out the strange destiny of two Novak's books, first a travel log on Egypt (In the Land of Pharaohs) and a book on the history of Dalmatia (Dalmatia at the Crossroad 1848). The destiny of this last book, which was published in 1948 but was banned and destroyed several weeks later, as the author points out, might be connected with Miroslav Krleža and his collaborators. Special emphasis in the paper is placed on the relationship between Miroslav Krleža and Grga Novak, and their correspondence where a close reading is dedicated to a very direct and mocking but unsent letter of Miroslav Krleža. The author analyses the style of that Krleža's text and compares it with some other similar but sent letters within the same framework and over a period of several years. In the last section of her text the author analyses the so far unknown Krleža's unsent letter to Grga Novak trying to shed more light on the very humble relationship between literature and power in communism

Construction of female characters in novel "Posljednji Stipančići" by Vjenceslav Novak

Upravo pobačajem, u Lucijinom, i odnosima u braku, u Valpruginom slučaju, Vjenceslav Novak konstruira jedinstvene ženske likove u hrvatskoj književnosti 19. stoljeća. Analiza cjelokupnog djela čitanog u ključu patrijahata i položaja žena u njemu, dovodi nas do zaključka kako se oba ženska lika razvijaju kroz cijeli roman. This final work analyzes female characters in the novel "Posljednji Stipančići" by Vjenceslav Novak. Considering that the novel belongs to the period of Croatian realism, this paper investigates whether the author in his writing distorted the realistic paradigm by which his contemporaries wrote, and it also focuses on the type of female characters, precisely Lucija and Valpurga Stipančić. A particular chapter is devoted to these two female characters, and contains certain elements of the starting text from which one can clearly see the ways in which Vjenceslav Novak constructs female characters in a patriarchal society. Illustrations and descriptions describing the author implicitly discuss abortion that was a taboo topic in the 19th century Croatian literature. Precisely through the cases of Lucija’s abortion and Valpurga's marital relationship, Vjenceslav Novak constructs unique female characters in the 19th century Croatian literature. The analysis of the entire work seen through patriarchy and position of women in that same society leads us to the conclusion that both female characters are developing through the whole novel
