Interview with Hank Zimmerman
No full textHank Zimmerman joined the US Army during the fall of 1942 and received his boot camp training at Camp Croft, Spartanburg, South Carolina. As an airborne infantryman, he received parachute training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Zimmerman was attached to E Company, 506th, 101st Airborne Division during WWII. He saw action at the Battle of the Bulge, Berchtesgaden, Germany, and Marmelon, France. In 1946, while in Germany, Zimmerman re-enlisted in the army and was sent for duty to 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star for action during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Belgium Citation, American Campaign Ribbon, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon. He was discharged in 1947 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Zimmerman was among US Army personnel who were interviewed by Hollywood and HBO staff members working for Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. How can we tell stories otherwise, when the usual ways of telling in mainstream culture are most often from a white, middle class perspective. What approach to making films may allow the telling of stories in a way that allows for a poetics of the everyday, survival, regardless, a tenderness and thriving of an alternative vision where difference is held with care.

Related to this, a one day symposium entitled 'Childhood & Public Housing' was held on Thursday 27 February 2020. Mansions (Kerry Campbell, Colette Griffin) commissioned from Stephanie Hemelryk Donald (Distinguished Professor of Film, University of Lincoln), this "symposium and platform for discussion around architecture, legacy, and memories associated with childhood and public housing. The symposium responds to the work of artist, activist and filmmaker Andrea Luka Zimmerman – affording a focus on regional experiences of public housing in the UK alongside international perspectives. This is an interdisciplinary event bringing together expertise in archaeology, cinema, architecture, design, sociology and criminology. These multiple perspectives allow us to consider the social benefits of local cosmopolitanism, play and equality that are ideal affordances of public housing, as well as the disadvantages when homes are badly maintained, sometimes dangerously so, or are in other ways inappropriate for residents building childhoods for themselves and their families"
