Abstract: Research material for the book, The Herndon and Inge Families: Genealogical, Historical, Biographical.Scope and Content Note: This collection contains research material for the book, The Herndon and Inge Families: Genealogical, Historical, Biographical, written by Inge and published by the Gregath Company of Cullman, Alabama, in 1977. The papers include correspondence regarding the book, correspondence from Inge family members, note cards, handwritten notes, newspaper clippings, excerpts from books containing genealogical information, and drafts of the manuscripts.Biographical/Historical Note: Colonel George B. Inge was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Inge served in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Reserve during World War II and worked for many years in the United States Civil Service prior to his retirement in 1962. He has been honored with numerous military medals and ribbons and has been a member and leader in many civic organizations in Mobile. In addition to The Herndon and Inge Families: Genealogical, Historical, Biographical, Inge is also the author of Our Book of State, a history of the Order of Myths, Mobile's oldest parading Mardi Gras society. Increased Bilateral Interactions in Middle-Aged Subjects
A hallmark of the age-related neural reorganization is that old versus young adults execute typical motor tasks by a more diffuse neural activation pattern including stronger ipsilateral activation during unilateral tasks. Whether such changes in neural activation are present already at middle age and affect bimanual interactions is unknown. We compared the amount of associated activity, i.e., muscle activity and force produced by the non-task hand and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) produced by magnetic brain stimulation between young (mean 24 years, n = 10) and middle-aged (mean 50 years, n = 10) subjects during brief unilateral (seven levels of % maximal voluntary contractions, MVCs) and bilateral contractions (4 × 7 levels of % MVC combinations), and during a 120-s-long MVC of sustained unilateral index finger abduction. During the force production, the excitability of the ipsilateral (iM1) or contralateral primary motor cortex (cM1) was assessed. The associated activity in the “resting” hand was ~2-fold higher in middle-aged (28% of MVC) versus young adults (11% of MVC) during brief unilateral MVCs. After controlling for the background muscle activity, MEPs in iM1 were similar in the two groups during brief unilateral contractions. Only at low (bilateral) forces, MEPs evoked in cM1 were 30% higher in the middle-aged versus young adults. At the start of the sustained contraction, the associated activity was higher in the middle-aged versus young subjects and increased progressively in both groups (30 versus 15% MVC at 120 s, respectively). MEPs were greater at the start of the sustained contraction in middle-aged subjects but increased further during the contraction only in young adults. Under these experimental conditions, the data provide evidence for the reorganization of neural control of unilateral force production as early as age 50. Future studies will determine if the altered neural control of such inter-manual interactions are of functional significance
Uncloseting Drama: Tennessee Williams, William Inge, and Gay Identity in Terry Teachout's Billy and Me
This paper was presented at the 39th Annual William Inge Theater Festival & Conference hosted by the William Inge Center for the Arts in April 2022.Terry Teachout’s 2017 play, Billy and Me, imagines two fictional encounters between Tennessee Williams and William Inge: first, in a bar in Chicago in 1944 immediately following a pre-Broadway tryout of The Glass Menagerie, then in New York in 1959 following the premiere of Inge’s A Loss of Roses. Through fictional dialogue, Teachout builds upon the historical relationship between these two playwrights to imagine the conversations that must have connected them as two midcentury gay playwrights in America: success and failure, sexual conquests, relationships, and addiction. In this way, Teachout’s play attempts to “uncloset” the issues that were at the heart of Williams’ and Inge’s life and work. Through a comparative analysis of specific characters and situations in their plays, this paper explores how the representation of white, gay male identity varies from the closet dramas of Williams and Inge to the uncloseted and celebrated representation of sexual identity in the theatre of today.
Teachout was the lead drama critic for The Wall Street Journal, playwright of Satchmo at the Waldorf, and author or editor of nearly eight books until his untimely death in 2022. His passion and respect for the writing and craft of America’s midcentury playwrights is apparent in the text of Billy and Me, which has had three productions up until now, providing an interesting study in how this work revivifies its historical subjects through both content as well as form

Interaction between force production and cognitive performance in humans
Objective: A dual task paradigm was used to examine the effects of the generation of force on cognitive performance. Methods: Subjects (n = 22) were asked to respond to auditory stimuli with their left middle or index finger and concurrently maintain a sub-maximal contraction with their right index finger at one of two different force levels. The contraction was maintained for approximately 12 s and the target force level was alternated between 30 and 60% of the maximal force. Force production was the primary task of interest; performance of the (secondary) choice reaction time task (reaction times and accuracy) was used as an index of the amount of interference between the two tasks. Results: All subjects were capable of performing the force tasks adequately. Significant interference was observed between the level of force production and cognitive performance. At the higher force level, subjects performed the cognitive task more slowly and less accurately compared to the lower force level. Conclusion: Our results show that the execution of high-effort motor behaviour interacts with cognitive task performance. However, comparison with the data obtained during fatiguing contractions in a previous study [Lorist MM, Kernell D, Meijman TF, Zijdewind I. Motor fatigue and cognitive task performance in humans. J Physiol 2002;545:313-319.] showed that the interference was stronger during fatiguing contractions than during the present high-effort motor behaviour. Significance: The results suggest that force-related factors can explain part of the fatigue-related interference between force production and cognitive performance. This result could have consequences for interpreting cognitive deficits observed in patients suffering from motor dysfunction. (c) 2005 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology. Bilateral Interactions between hands: Associated activity and bilateral deficit
Mensen hebben een erg goede controle over de bewegingen die hun handen maken en ze zijn ook erg goed in het maken van bewegingen met twee handen tegelijkertijd (bimanuele bewegingen, bijv. pianospelen). Ondanks dat er al veel bekend is over de werking van het motorische systeem, is het nog niet precies bekend welke neurofysiologische mechanismen mensen in staat stelt gecoördineerde bimanuele bewegingen te maken.
Het maken van een gecoördineerde bimanuele beweging vereist uitwisseling van informatie tussen de motor cortices in beide hersenhelften. Deze informatie-uitwisselingen worden ook wel bilaterale interacties genoemd. Ondanks dat voor het verkrijgen van precieze bilaterale interacties tussen de handen veel oefening en training nodig is (bijv. leren je veters te strikken), zijn sommige bilaterale interacties al aanwezig bij de geboorte. De aanwezigheid van deze ingeboren interacties uit zich bijvoorbeeld in de sterke tendens van mensen om hun handen in symmetrie te bewegen (bijv. handen klappen). Wat erg interessant is, is dat de tendens tot symmetrisch bewegen niet alleen zichtbaar is tijdens bimanuele maar ook tijdens unimanuele bewegingen (met 1 hand). Tijdens een sterke of vermoeiende contractie bijvoorbeeld, zal ook de contralaterale hand gaan meebewegen. Deze uiting van ongewilde bimanuele interacties is interessant omdat het ons kan helpen bilaterale interacties tussen de handen te bestuderen. In dit proefschrift onderzoeken we neurofysiologische aspecten van bilaterale interacties tussen de handen, met behulp van ‘ongewilde’ bilaterale interacties zichtbaar tijdens sterke of vermoeiende contracties.
Inge Lehmann’s work materials and seismological epistolary archive
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 9.0px Times;"> </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 9.0px Times;">The Inge Lehmann archive contains thousands of seismological work documents from Inge Lehmann’s private home. For a long time the author thought that the main concern was to keep the documents for posterity. There is now a renewed interest in Inge Lehmann, and some documents were presented in a poster at ESC Potsdam 2004, and the collection of documents were scanned and catalogued 2005-2006 at Storia Geofisica Ambiente in Bologna. Inge Lehmann (1888-1993) is famous for her discovery in 1936 of the earth’s inner core and for work on the upper mantle. A short biography is given. After her retirement in 1953 she worked at home in Denmark, and abroad in USA and in Canada. She took part in the creation of the European Seismological Commission in 1951, and in the creation of the International Seismological Centre in 1964. Inge Lehmann received many awards. Some letters from her early correspondence with Harold Jeffreys are discussed, they show how the inner core was discussed already in 1932. A few of the author’s reminiscences of Inge Lehmann are given.</p> <br />
Neuronal mechanisms of motor learning are age dependent
There is controversy whether age-related neuroanatomical and neurophysiological changes in the central nervous system affect healthy old adults' abilities to acquire and retain motor skills. We examined the effects of age on motor skill acquisition and retention and potential underlying mechanisms by measuring corticospinal and intracortical excitability, using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Healthy young (n = 24, 22 years) and old (n = 22, 71 years) adults practiced a wrist flexion-extention visuomotor task or only watched the templates as an attentional control for 20 minutes. Old compared with young adults performed less well at baseline. Although the absolute magnitude of skill acquisition and retention was similar in the 2 age groups (age x intervention x time, p - 0.425), a comparison of baseline-similar age sub-groups revealed impaired skill acquisition but not retention in old versus young. Furthermore, the neuronal mechanisms differed as revealed by an opposite direction of associations in the age-groups between relative skill acquisition and intracortical facilitation during the task, and opposite changes during skill retention in corticospinal excitability at rest and during the task and intracortical inhibition during the task. Perceived fatigue and muscle fatigability in persons with multiple sclerosis
Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) often report increased levels of perceived fatigue, which negatively influence their life. The current thesis studied fatigue in MS patients from different angles. The increased perceived fatigue in MS patients is multifactorial, and a combination of factors is necessary to explain the perceived fatigue. One of these factors is the fatigability of the muscle. The muscle fatigability is caused by both central and peripheral mechanisms. In MS patients the contribution of central factors is larger than in controls, and it seems to be stronger for SPMS patients than RRMS patients. This knowledge may influence future treatments. Muscle fatigability does not only affect physical output, but also a concurrent cognitive task. During a dual task. the greater the muscle fatigability, the stronger the effect on cognitive performance, especially in MS patients. Also, a more complex bimanual task versus a simple bimanual task reduces performance of MS patients more than that of controls. Furthermore, we found that dual tasks are executed differently by young and middle-aged participants. Middle-aged participants prepare less, which results in slower but more accurate responses
