Coupling constants and unification
The first part of this work gives a general background for the ideas involved in the research presented in this thesis. Coupling constants, Renor-malisation Group Equation, Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) and Super symmetry (SUSY) are briefly introduced. Following this, we analyse the unification parameters M(_GUT) and l/α(_GUT) as functions of the number of fermion families (F) and Higgs boson multiplets (S). Analytical and numerical solutions to the leading and next-to-leading order evolution equation for the couplings a, are obtained. This is done in the context of the Standard Model embedded in SU(5), SUSY SU(5) and L-R SO(IO). In all these GUTs, the first order analytical approach proves itself a useful probe to examine the structure of M(_GUT) and l/α(_GUT) in terms of the variables F and S. General trends remain the same after including second order corrections to the evolution equations. Recent precision data for the coupling constants allow more definitive conclusions to be reached. We find that restrictions on the unification parameters constrain F and S in such a way that SU(5) is ruled out by constraints on 5 (in agreement with previous results), F is severely limited in SUSY SU(5) and, unlike SUSY SU(5), an acceptable unification scenario can still be obtained when Higgs bosons are ignored in L-R SO(IO). The structures of the latter two GUTs are found to be very different although some features are common to both
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
DLT-Based Personal Data Access Control with Key-Redistribution
Data management services present a challenge in terms of trust, as service managers can access the data on their servers easily. Decentralized data services and smart contracts can solve problems related to the presence of centralized trusted authorities, but in turn they can introduce other issues related to compliance with data protection and regulations (e.g., GDPR). Historically, encryption has been used to address some of these concerns, but it restricts data sharing. To facilitate encrypted decentralized file storage while enabling data sharing, we propose a Key-Redistribution Proxy Re-Encryption (KeRePRE) system. KeRePRE is a decentralized and encrypted data-service, where authorization servers are part of a threshold proxy re-encryption scheme. A key-redistribution mechanism (that extends the Um-bral scheme) allows for the addition and removal of managers in a decentralized and trustless manner. Additionally, we offer a proof of concept implementation, where data access control is based on an access control list, implemented as a smart contract in a DLT, and can be read-only accessed by the authorization servers

One of the problems of cloud-based data services is the trust involved in its management, since service managers can easily access the data on their servers. The problem is exacerbated in decentralized data services, where managers and operators are pseudo-anonymous by default, to the point where these systems are not compliant with data protection regulations such as GDPR. These problems have historically been dealt with data encryption, but this inhibits data sharing. To enable data-sharing for a encrypted decentralized file storage, we propose Key-Redistribution Proxy Re-Encryption (KeRePRE). KeRePRE is a decentralized and encrypted data-service where managers in the form of authorization servers are part of a threshold proxy re-encryption scheme. In particular, to solve the problem of malicious nodes, we extend the work in Umbral with a system based on a key-redistribution mechanism to add and remove managers in a decentralized and trustless way, and we provide a proof of concept implementation. Data access control is based on an access control list stored on a DLT which can be read-only accessed by the authorization servers

John F. Kennedy telegram to Roosevelt
Jersey Homesteads (later the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) President Kennedy expressed his gratitude to the people of Roosevelt for constructing the memorial, and commented that it will serve as a constant reminder of Roosevelt's good works
Science in the schools - the Extreme Energy Events project
The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) project aims to study extended air showers from high energy cosmic rays and extreme energy events by detecting the muon component of the shower. To achieve this goal, a network of muon telescopes has been installed in high schools distributed all over Italy. Each muon telescope consists of three large area (80 × 160 cm2) Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs). Each MRPC has 24 pickup strips read out at both ends; the hit position along the strip is thus deduced from the time difference. This design offers pointing capability, so that the muon direction can be reconstructed. The project has been conceived by Prof. A. Zichichi in order to rekindle the interest of young people in science and give them a first-hand experience of scientific research
Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either
