    Jin Wen Gong's Odyssey and Its Historical Background

    This article discusses the archetypical image of the overlord, Ba zhe 霸者, of the Spring and Autumn period, through analyzing the Odyssey of Jin Wen Gong 晋文公.Jin Wen Gong was the ruler of the Jin state belonging to the royal Zhou 周 clan, Ji 姫; and he was one of the Ba overlord at that time. Some early historical sources attribute two unique characteristics to him: i.e., his close relationship with the Rong Di 戎狄 peoples, and his odyssey around the states and regions including Di, Wei 衛, Qi 齊, Cao 曹, Song 宋, Zheng 鄭, Chu 楚, and Qin 秦.There were cultural boundaries at multiple levels of society during the Spring and Autumn period, For example, there were boundaries between the city-states Guo 國 and the rural Rong Di groups between the Zhou states and the non-Zhou Man Yi 蠻夷 states, and between the states inside and outside the Hua-Xia 華夏order. Jin established local hegemony over the Rong Di peoples in the north. In similar fashion, Qi and Song dominated the Dong Yi 東夷 in the east, Chu the Man Yi in the south, and Qin the Xi Rong 西戎 in the west. Among them, it was Jin who given the Zhou Dynasty’s traditional formal appointment to ‘‘Ce Ming 策命”, as a leader who should maintain the Zhou rule over the states of the Central Plains. This appointment enabled Jin to regulate the Hua-Xia order.The tales of Wen Gong’s odyssey describes him as a wanderer who crossed the multiple boundaries set down during the period. He took asylum among northern relatives, the Di people. During his journey, he was rejected by the Ji clan states, but then he gained support from the frontier states, including Qi, Song, Chu and Qin. This story shows Jin was able to united the marginal forces at the time and establish a new world order. This tale mirrors the archetypical image of the Ba, which was formed and shared by the chroniclers before the mid-Warring States Period on the basis of their historical knowledge about the Spring and Autumn period.journal articl
