    Angiotensin II induces soluble fms-Like tyrosine kinase-1 release via calcineurin signaling pathway in pregnancy

    Maternal endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia is associated with increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a circulating antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases concomitant with sFlt-1 during pregnancy. Therefore, we speculated that Ang II may promote the expression of sFlt-1 in pregnancy. Here we report that infusion of Ang II significantly increases circulating levels of sFlt-1 in pregnant mice, thereby demonstrating that Ang II is a regulator of sFlt-1 secretion in vivo. Furthermore, Ang II stimulated sFlt-1 production in a dose- and time-dependent manner from human villous explants and cultured trophoblasts but not from endothelial cells, suggesting that trophoblasts are the primary source of sFlt-1 during pregnancy. As expected, Ang II-induced sFlt-1 secretion resulted in the inhibition of endothelial cell migration and in vitro tube formation. In vitro and in vivo studies with losartan, small interfering RNA specific for calcineurin and FK506 demonstrated that Ang II-mediated sFlt-1 release was via Ang II type 1 receptor activation and calcineurin signaling, respectively. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized regulatory role for Ang II on sFlt-1 expression in murine and human pregnancy and suggest that elevated sFlt-1 levels in preeclampsia may be caused by a dysregulation of the local renin/angiotensin system

    Mean equation based scaling analysis of fully-developed turbulent channel flow with uniform heat generation

    Multi-scale analysis of the mean equation for passive scalar transport is used to investigate the asymp- totic scaling structure of fully developed turbulent channel flow subjected to uniform heat generation. Unlike previous studies of channel flow heat transport with fixed surface temperature or constant inward surface flux, the present flow has a constant outward wall flux that accommodates for the volumetrically uniform heat generation. This configuration has distinct analytical advantages relative to precisely eluci- dating the underlying self-similar structure admitted by the mean transport equation. The present anal- yses are advanced using direct numerical simulations (Pirozzoli et al., 2016) that cover friction Reynolds numbers up to d þ 1⁄4 4088 and Prandtl numbers ranging from Pr 1⁄4 0:2–1:0. The leading balances of terms in the mean equation are determined empirically and then analytically described. Consistent with its asymptotic universality, the logarithmic mean temperature profile is shown analytically to arise as a sim- ilarity solution to the mean scalar equation, with this solution emerging (as d þ ! 1) on an interior domain where molecular diffusion effects are negligible. In addition to clarifying the Reynolds and Prandtl number influences on the von Kármán constant for temperature, k h , the present theory also pro- vides a couple of self-consistent ways to estimate, k h . As with previous empirical observations, the pre- sent analytical predictions for k h indicate values that are larger than found for the mean velocity von Kármán constant. The potential origin of this is briefly discussed

L’auteur met ainsi en perspective plusieurs remarques faites par le voyageur chinois sur la culture culinaire des gens d’Angkor avec les pratiques qu’il a pu observer en milieu familial dans la région de Siem Reap de nos jours. Cette note revient en particulier sur la place du tamarin dans la préparation des sauces et des condiments dans la cuisine cambodgienne.This note wants to study the famous record of Zhou Daguan on the late XIIIth Angkorian society as a resource for social and cultural anthropology in Cambodia. The author puts into perspective several remarks made by the Chinese traveler on the people of Angkor cuisine habits with the practices he observes in familial context in Siem Reap today.     Simultaneous Target Detection and Multi-user Communications Enabled by Joint Beamforming

    In this paper, we propose several joint beamforming designs for the multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) dual-functional radar-communication system. We firstly split the antennas into two groups, one for radar and the other for communication. With this separated deployment, the radar signal is designed to fall into the null-space of the downlink communication channel. The communication beamformer is optimized such that the obtained beampattern matches the radar's beampattern while satisfying the performance requirements of the downlink users. We further consider a second operational option, where all the antennas transmit a joint waveform that is shared by both radar and communications, and formulate an appropriate beampattern while guaranteeing the downlink cellular transmission. Numerical results show that both methods are able to realize the simultaneous radar detection and wireless information transfer

    Puerarin protects against endothelial dysfunction and end-organ damage in Ang II-induced hypertension

    Puerarin, a major isoflavonoid compound from Chinese herb Kudzu roots, has been widely used for the treatment of hypertensive and cardiovascular diseases in China. Here, we investigated puerarin’s beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system in angiotensin (Ang) II-induced hypertensive rats. Sprague–Dawley rats were treated with Ang II for 5 days or with puerarin for 10 days followed by Ang II and puerarin for 5 days. Endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) to acetylcholine was determined using an organ chamber bath. Ang II increased the systolic blood pressure (SBP: 178 ± 5 mmHg vs. 112 ± 3 mmHg in control, p < 0.05), aortic (30%, p < 0.05), and left ventricular (LV) weight (23%); puerarin reduced SBP (160 ± 2 mmHg, p < 0.05), aortic, and left ventricular weight in Ang II-infused rats. Puerarin also reduced aortic medial thickness and myocardial cell surface area in Ang II-infused rats. Compared with control rats, Ang II infused rats exhibited an impaired EDR with reduction in the protein expression of phosphor-eNOS at Ser 1177 and an increase in the expression of gp91phox (85%), p22phox (113%), transforming growth factor β1 (145%) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (82%). Puerarin improved EDR and reversed the changes in Ang II-induced protein expression of above molecules. Our results demonstrate that in Ang II-induced hypertensive rats, puerarin protects against endothelial dysfunction and end organ damage with a mild reduction in SBP, and that the cardiovascular beneficial effects of puerarin may be in part attributed to its anti-oxidant and upregulation of phosphor-eNOS
