Nanoimprint lithography for planar chiral photonic meta-materials

    No full text
Room temperature nanoimprint lithography has successfully been applied to the fabrication of planar chiral photonic meta-materials. For dielectric chiral structures a single layer of thick HSQ was used while for metallic chiral structures a bi-layer technique using PMMA/hydrogen silsequioxane (HSQ) was applied. The polarization conversion capabilities of planar chiral structures imprinted in dielectric materials have experimentally been observed. This indicates that the developed processes in this work have the prospect of manufacturing planar photonic meta media in high volume at low cost

Impact damage of composite laminates with high-speed waterjet

    No full text
Rain erosion may cause substantial damage to aircrafts during supersonic flight. Such event is investigated here via high-speed waterjet impact on composite laminates. An experimental setup is developed to produce waterjets with the speed up to 700m/s and a finite element model of the waterjet-composite impact event is established. The consistency of experiment and simulation results validates the adopted numerical methods. The distribution of the water-hammer pressure is non-uniform and the maximum pressure occurs near the contact periphery when the water is about to eject laterally. After a high-speed (300∼560m/s) waterjet impacts a composite laminate, the impacted surface depression is observed, and the typical surface damage presents a central region with no visible surface damage surrounded by a faded “failure ring” with resin removal, matrix cracking and minor fiber fracture. Delamination occurs at the interfaces of adjacent layers with unequal dimensions and longitudinal matrix cracking appears on the back surface. Both the velocity and the diameter of waterjets are crucial factors on CFRP damage extents. Water-hammer pressure, the stagnation pressure and propagation of stress waves are failure mechanisms for most matrix damage in CFRP impacted by waterjets.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Structural Integrity & Composite

Translation Competence Research Data in Multilateral International and Interprofessional Collaborative Learning

    No full text
After Kiraly (2000) introduced the collaborative form of translation in classrooms, Pavlović (2007), Kenny (2008) and Huertas Barros (2011) provide us with some empirical evidence that testifies to the impact of collaborative learning. This chapter sets out to describe the collaborative forms of learning at different stages in the translation processes in the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project, a long-term cross-cultural virtual team. It describes the forms of collaborative learning practised in this multilateral international project in technical communication and translator training programmes, and explores the empirical data that the project may provide for future research into learning translation

A decision-making model for remanufacturers: considering both consumers’ environmental preference and the government subsidy policy

    No full text
Remanufactured products have the significantly low environmental impact through their life cycles, but consumers’ acceptance of remanufactured products is low and uncertain. To promote the use of remanufactured products, the governments in developing countries such as China have provided subsides for remanufacturers. However, how to understand consumers’ preferences and effectively use the government subsidy is still difficult for remanufacturers. This paper develops a decision-making model considering both consumers’ preference for remanufactured products and effect of the government subsidy. Using the price elasticity of demand (PED) of remanufactured products as an indicator to differentiate consumers’ environmental preference, it examines a joint decision problem for price determination of a remanufactured product and share of the subsidy between the remanufacturer and consumers. It is found that the optimal price and the subsidy-sharing percentage are inversely proportional to the weighted-sum of the price elasticity of demand (PED). Based on data from a leading remanufacturer in China, this study finds that if a remanufacturer shares a percentage of the subsidy with consumers, it can get more profit due to the increased market. In order to balance the trade-off of price and share of the subsidy effectively, the sharing percentage of the subsidy and the optimal price of remanufactured products should follow the certain rules, and the sharing percentage of the subsidy relies on the proportion of green consumers. In addition, it is necessary for remanufacturers to have a complete understanding of consumers’ environmental preference and its trends
