    Generational comparison: cognitions, barriers and supports of weight-related behaviors among Generation x and millennial parents enrolled in the HomeStyles intervention program

    Obesity, as a chronic disease and a risk factor for many serious diseases, is a highly prevalent public health problem in the United States. Although there were no significant changes in childhood obesity prevalence, adults showed an increasing trend in the past decade. However, childhood obesity can be a risk factor for adult obesity as behavior patterns and eating preferences can track across childhood and become lifelong habits that are resistant to change. Thus, early interventions are necessary and potentially more effective to prevent excessive weight gain. HomeStyles, as a health promotion intervention program, targets parents of preschoolers to help shape their home environment and weight-related behaviors. To further investigate study outcome and discover potential new strategies for future health education programs, we evaluated whether generational differences exist in HomeStyles participants in terms of weight-related parenting. Study participants were categorized into Generation X (born in 1965-1981) and Millennials (born in 1982-1999) for comparison. Based on the analyses of 333 participants (164 as Generation X, and 169 as Millennials), we discovered a few differences in socio-demographic, behavioral and cognitive aspects of the two generations. Generation X participants had higher education levels, were more likely to have a paid employment, and more affluent as well as less food insecure than Millennial participants. Millennial participants reported higher outcome expectations from eating healthy and exercising than Generation X participants did, but the higher cognitive level is not reflected in better weight-related behaviors. Moreover, we evaluated participants remained versus dropped out to seek potential factors that affect their decision making. For Millennial participants, they tend to stay for follow-up studies if their spouse or partner shared more financial responsibilities of supporting the family, while this connection was not discovered for Generation X. For those who dropped out of the study, Generation X participants were more likely to report depressive symptoms than Millennials. Thus, we might take the effect of mood status on retention efforts into consideration for future health education programs. Although we discovered a few differences between Generation X and Millennials participating HomeStyles, we attribute the difference as the result of being in different life stages instead of generation specific culture. In our conclusion, Generation X and Millennial adults were more similar than different as parents of preschoolers in the scenario of weight-related parenting.     Metaphorical and Analogical Thinking in Urban Design and Planning

    Metaphorical and analogical thinking is a major aspect of how human intelligence tackles complex tasks in the discipline of urban design and planning. However, there is little research on this subject within urban design and planning, and the research approaches in closely related design disciplines lack a comprehensive view on its presence and roles on a disciplinary level. This paper argues that different metaphors/analogies play different roles to support different cognitive processes in urban design and planning, by constructing a framework to clarify the contexts, roles, and characteristics of M-A thinking. With case analyses, it further demonstrates that distinct characteristics related to the different roles can be explained with underlying cognitive patterns “organising” basic-form M-As, and that these patterns are inter-transformable. The prevalence and mortality of COPD continue to increase, and underdiagnosis of COPD remains a critical issue. Previous reports investigated promising microRNAs (miRNAs) to reveal the molecular mechanism for the development of COPD; however, diagnostic and therapeutic markers for COPD have not yet been found. For this study, 20 representative COPD patients were separated into four groups based on increasing severity (A, B, C, and D) and compared to six healthy controls. Small RNA profiles of peripheral leukocytes were differentially expressed miRNAs (analyzed via next-generation sequencing) were validated via quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Compared to healthy controls, 19 differentially expressed miRNAs were found in COPD patients. For all COPD groups, miR-3177-3p was downregulated, while 17 miRNAs were upregulated. Furthermore, the results revealed 21 differentially expressed miRNAs, of which miR-183-5p was continually downregulated from A to B to D. Between respective bronchodilator reversibility positive and negative groups of COPD different groups (A, B, C, and D), 10 miRNAs were differentially expressed, while miR-100-5p was upregulated in the negative groups. In conclusion, miR-106b-5p, miR-125a-5p, miR-183-5p, and miR-100-5p are central for the development of COPD. The severity of COPD was attenuated by miR-106b-5p, thus suggesting this miRNA as potential target for disease treatment. Keywords: COPD, miRNA, sequencing, diagnosis, qRT-PC

    A short carrier lifetime semiconductor optical amplifier with n-type modulation-doped multiple quantum well structure

    Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) with n-type modulation-doped multiple quantum well structure have been investigated. The shortened carrier lifetime is derived from the PL spectrum and electrical modulation frequency response measurement. The carrier lifetime in semiconductor optical amplifiers with any n-type-2-modulated doping multiple quantum well structure is less than 60% of that in the undoped partner. The shortest measured carrier lifetime of 236 ps in the MD-MQW SOA with sheet carrier density of 3 x 10(12) cm(-2) was only 38% of that in the undoped MQW SOA, which can increase the wavelength conversion efficiency via four wave mixing by a factor of about 7 and switching speed via XGM and XPM applications by a factor of 2.63

    Graded tensile-strained bulk InGaAs/InP superluminescent diode with very wide emission spectrum

    A kind of novel broad-band superluminescent diodes (SLDs) using graded tensile-strained bulk InGaAs is developed. The graded tensile-strained bulk InGaAs is obtained by changing only group-III trimethyl-gallium source flow during low-pressure metal organic vapor-phase epitaxy. At the injection current of 200 mA, the fabricated SLDs with such structure demonstrate full-width at half-maximum spectral width of 106 nm and the output light power of 13.6 mW, respectively
