This species was reported from several Asian countries viz., Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand where it was recorded on the same host plant species of Centrosema pubescens by Baker (1975). This species belong to the 9th group of species sensu Flechtmann and Knihinicki (2002), with a tiny or absent dorsomedian spur of the empodium of the female. Tetranychus okinawanus Ehara Tetranychus okinawanus Ehara, 1995 This species was first reported on Pueraria lobata from Okinawa Islands of Japan by Ehara (1995) and hitherto known from Japan and Taiwan on more than 90 host plants. This is a new report from India on an ornamental plant Adenium obesum. Oligonychus neotylus Zeity & Srinivasa & Gowda 2016, sp. nov.
Oligonychus neotylus sp. nov. Zeity & Srinivasa (Figs. 1–11) General diagnosis. Based on Pritchard and Baker (1955), this new species belongs to the pratensis group defined by the aedeagus bent dorsad, and females with tibia I with nine tactile setae, tarsus I with two tactile setae on the venter at or just beyond the distal set of duplex setae, longitudinal striae between setae f1; they inhabit the under surface of monocotyledonous host plants. The species is defined by having: pre-genital striae longitudinal; striae transverse on posterior part of genital area, longitudinal anteriorly between g1. Peritreme ends in simple elongate bulb. Knob of aedeagus similar to bird’s head with beak. Description. Male. Holotype. Near grayish in color. Gnathosoma. Terminal sensillum of palpus (3.9–4.3µm) twice as long as broad; dorsal sensillum (3.8–4.0µm) fusiform, smaller than terminal sensillum (spinneret). Peritreme ends in simple elongated bulb. Dorsum. Idiosoma length 390 µm (including gnathosoma), range 388–391 µm (2 paratypes properly mounted and measured). Idiosomal setae slightly barbed, longer than distance between their bases. Paratypes, 3 males and 8 females, data same as for holotype (AINP 1337). Other material examined: Eight females and seven males from Zea mays, Doddaballapur, south India (N 13o17 ' 94''; E 77o 32 ' 88''; elevation 895 m) October 2013, coll. Mahran Zeity (AINP1354); three males, from Pennisetum purpureum, GKVK campus, Bangalore (N 13o 04 ' 27''; E 77o 34 ' 43''; elevation 940 m) November 2014, coll. Mahran Zeity (AINP1660). All type material deposited in AINP Agricultural Acarology collection, UAS Bangalore, India. Etymology. Named after Oligonychus tylus Baker & Pritchard, 1960, being the nearest species. Remarks. This species resembles O. tylus in having a relatively small aedeagal knob, but it differs in having a small anterior projection and much longer posterior projection, while in O. tylus the anterior projection is absent and the posterior projection is minute. Like Oligonychus tylus, the new species is not monophagous. Oligonychus tylus is known from Panicum maximum, Sorghum and an unidentified wild grass (Poaceae), and also Phoenix dactylifera (Arecaceae) (Baker & Pritchard 1960; Gerson et al., 1983; Sirsikar & Nagabhusanam 1986).Published as part of Zeity, Mahran, Srinivasa, N. & Gowda, C. Tetranychus hirsutus sp. nov. Zeity & Srinivasa (Figs. 12–32) General diagnosis. Female with 4 tactile setae proximad to proximal duplex setae of tarsus I; peritreme hooked distally; dorsal striae forming diamond pattern between setae e1 and f1; empodium on tarsus I without mediodorsal spur; pre-genital striae longitudinal, broken; dorsal lobes with hair-like processes. Male with: aedeagal knob asymmetrical, a small acute ventrally-directed posterior projection and a larger rounded anterior projection, dorsal margin of knob rounded; empodium with spurs on ambulacra I and II, empodium II with proximoventral hairs. Based on Flechtmann & Knihinicki (2002) this species can be grouped in the 9th group along with Tetranychus kanzawai. Description. Male : Holotype: Idiosomal length 397 µm (including gnathosoma), range 371–385µm (three paratypes). Dorsal striae lacking lobes. Terminal sensillum (spinneret) of palpus (5.7–6.4µm) thrice as long as broad and dorsal sensillum (3.4–3.7) fusiform, shorter than terminal. Peritreme hooked distally. The specific epithet is derived from an adjective in Latin " hirsutus " meaning " hairy ", and refers to the hair like projections or processes on the dorsal striae of the female. Type material. Holotype one male, from G. sylvestre, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, south India (N13o04 ' 35''; E77o34 ' 46''; elevation 934 m), January 2015, coll. Mahran Zeity. Paratypes, 17 males and 10 females, data same as for holotype (AINP 1738). Remarks. The aedeagus of this new species is similar to Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida in having a broad and rounded dorsal margin with slight angulation. The aedeagus differs slightly in having the posterior projection extended and curved distally, whereas this projection is straight in T. kanzawai. Females also differ from T. kanzawai in having broken pregenital striae, whereas they are entire in T. kanzawai. Furthermore, the new species is distinctive from all described species under Tetranychus in having dorsal striae with lobes extended like hairs. Carbonnelle and Hance (2004) found that the shape of dorsal lobes was highly variable in the T. urticae species complex, thus showing it has limited diagnostic power. However, the dorsal lobes of T. hirsutus are so unique that we believe they can be used to distinguish this species from others. The extension of these dorsal lobes increases the total surface area and might play a significant role in temperature and body water regulation, as Jeppson et al. (1975) and Mollet and Sevacherian (1984) have opined. More investigation is required to ascertain the functional significance of these lobes. Biological observations. The new species inhabits the undersurface of leaves of Gymnema sylvestre. The body size of females is relatively large, while that of males is smaller. Both sexes are red in color but females are darker. Females lay orange colored eggs under silken webbing and freshly emerged adult females are ash colored, which develop into dark red females on maturity.Published as part of Zeity, Mahran, Srinivasa, N. & Gowda, C. Empodia I and II with an obvious mediodorsal spur; spur on empodium I stout and 2/3 length of proximoventral hairs; spurs on empodia III and IV absent.</p> <p> <b>Specimens examined.</b> 13 females and 13 males on <i>Bambusa bambos</i>, GKVK, Bangalore, south India, August 2012 coll. Mahran Zeity (AINP1002); 15 females and 17 males on <i>Bambusa bambos</i>, Dharwad, south India, September 2013 coll. Mahran Zeity (AINP1341); Six females and nine males on <i>Bambusa bambos</i>, Mudigere, south India, November 2013, coll. Mahran Zeity (AINP1397).</p> <p> <b>Remarks.</b> This species is similar to <i>Tetranychus bambusicola</i> Ehara, but females are separated by the ratio of the size and length of the tarsus I mediodorsal spur and relative to the proximoventral hairs. Both are larger in <i>T. bambusae</i> (15.2µm/ 22.5µm, ratio 68%), while they are smaller in <i>T. bambusicola</i> Ehara is (4µm/10µm, ratio 30%) (measurements are estimated from Ehara and Tho (1988)). The shape of the aedeagus differs slightly, with <i>T. bambusicola</i> having an angulate posterior tip. Both species, <i>Tetranychus bambusae</i> and <i>T. bambusicola</i>, were grouped by Flechtmann and Knihinicki (2002) in the 8th group of <i>Tetranychus,</i> being those with an obvious dorsomedian spur on at least empodium I.
