Italian Yachts Restoration. Possible tools for the ‘new’ business of nautical heritage

    No full text
In Italy, the 80s saw the beginning of a re- born interest in nautical heritage. Year after year, ` old' activities such as traditional shipwright skills and boatyards working with wooden boats started to be reintroduced to the Italian entrepreneurship reality. Their new scope was no longer the construction of new wooden boats, but the restoration of those considered historical or with cultural importance. Restoration is a practice aiming to secure the future of objects of cultural importance. Until today, wooden boats have been restored according to the project designer's sensitivities. Rules or general indications do not exist. Thanks to the tool of ` design thinking' this research arrives at the proposal of ` guidelines for boat restoration', with a multiple purpose: being a tool for any designer working on the restoration of boats; adding value to those designers' work; activating opportunities for new entrepreneurship; and developing old entrepreneurship realities according to present needs

'Isole felici'.

Patrimonio Nautico e Design. I 100 ANNI DEL NUOVO AIUTO DI DIO

    No full text

NAUTICA E DESIGN.

The major boatyards in the world for yachts production are Italian. They are Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti and Sanlorenzo. Their yachts declare the excellence of Made in Italy and of Italian Design. That excellence origins in the second post world-war when, in consequence of an overturning of paradigms, the first industrial production of the nautical sector was born. At the same time the Italian motor-yacht, nowadays considered the archetype of our present production, finds confirmation. After and thanks to incisive summary of the key characters that have built the Nautical Design during the last fifty years, the aim of the paper is to declare and underline the lines of research useful for developing a sustainable and reliable way of designing within the nautical sector

HISTORICAL VESSELS AS CULTURAL HERITAGE. AN ITALIAN HERITAGE NOWADAYS UNDERRATED BY LAW AND COMMUNITY

During the last two years, Cultural Heritages belonging to any country opened up their boundaries to tangible and intangible assets that were little known and not adequately enhanced. Following the recent trend, those heritages yearn for being part of our Cultural Heritage as much as Gioconda or David. Italian maritime museums, also supported by governmental and institutional associations like ICOM, activated some good practices such as the diffuse museum or the network between territory and museums belonging to the same category. Nevertheless, also considering the improved scenario just mentioned, Nautical Heritage is still little known and it is considered as niche product. The difficult perception of the Maritime and Nautical Heritage like a ‘real’ Cutural Heritage depends on the past bad attention to this kind of goods and, before that, on inappropriate legislation. Recent update to the DLgs. n.42-2004, Codice dei Beni Culturali e del Paesaggio, completed the Italian Cultural Heritage with specific kind of vessels. However, our relevant legislation is currently disregarded and not easily applicable to our case. After analysing critically the last twenty years evolution of our legislation, with this paper we mean to underline the innovative characters that our legislative system needs with the goals of updating the identification and the enhancement of our Nautical Heritage within the Cultural Heritage and, finally, identifying best solution for conserving and protecting it

INNOVATIVE RESTORATION. PROCESS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF NAUTICAL HISTORY

    No full text
Nautical Heritage, a new discipline dedicated to historic boats, has developed as a topic of study in the field of Nautical and Naval Design with research and didactic headquarters in the University of Genoa’s Architecture and Design Department (dAD). At present this includes two complementary fields of research: the cataloguing of Italy’s boats and the definition of methods for their preservation. The purpose of this paper is to present the studies conducted and results achieved in the latter field of research. Specifically, this article falls under the heading of Process Innovation and demonstrates a new design tool for the restoration of still-functioning historic boats: the ‘guidelines for the process of nautical restoration’

SKIN. The use of external surface in yacht design

    No full text
Skin, external surface, coating... Those are words strictly linked to the concept of appearance, which means to be watched, to show, and sometimes to seem: a comparison between being and appearing. From a design point of view, the surface coating is, mainly, an esthetical choice. Nevertheless, sometimes that element has been due to other reasons. During the First World War, painting warships with the dazzle technique allowed them to "hide" from the enemy: the shapes and colours applied to hulls allowed them to appear in different sizes or positions compared to the actual real one. In that case, the skin assumed a vital defensive role. Even if most yachts today do not dazzle with peculiar external surfaces – if we closed our eyes we could imagine hulls in neutral colours, generally in one or two tones – skin however is a project element with significant potential. Ivana Porfiri commissioned Jeff Koons, acclaimed contemporary artist, to finish the external coat of the Guilty. The skin highlights shapes and formal choices of hull and superstructure, and also takes forward the link between art and yacht design, explicit by the display of art in the interiors. Another example of designed skin is LAP-1 by Francesco Paszkowski Design. Here the external coating was designed with camouflage with shades of blue, a symbolic colour for the Baglietto shipyard, responsible for building the yacht. Finally, browsing the most significant projects, the paper aims to analyse the design and use of external coatings of yachts. The skin project in a nautical context is today mainly linked to aesthetic reasons. Nevertheless, also thanks to the use of new materials, innovative painting, and covering techniques, new possibilities for skin design are envisaged. External coating, colours, textures and hull finishing could meet different and new needs in the energy and environmental field
