Un’arte per l’impero. Funzione e intenzione delle immagini nel mondo romano
No full textIl volume, curato e in gran parte tradotto da Eugenio Polito, raccoglie numerosi saggi di Paul Zanker, pubblicati negli ultimi anni in tedesco e inglese e finora, con poche eccezioni, mai tradotti in italiano. Grazie all’accostamento mirato e alla revisione dei saggi, condotti dall’autore in collaborazione con il curatore, l’opera che si presenta si configura come un prodotto originale, non esistendo in tale forma altro che in lingua italiana. Paul Zanker è uno dei maggiori archeologi contemporanei, le cui precedenti opere hanno avuto un notevole impatto sul corso degli studi di archeologia classica negli ultimi due decenni. I saggi contenuti nella raccolta qui esaminata, incentrati sul tema dell’immaginario romano di età imperiale e dei suoi risvolti psicologici e sociologici, vengono a costituire una sorta di ideale continuazione del percorso di ricerca dell’autore, di cui aggiornano le prospettive. Al centro delle riflessioni di Zanker è principalmente l’aspetto della ricezione delle immagini da parte di diversi tipi di pubblico, contrapposto al momento creativo, che rimane in secondo piano. Tale approccio è pienamente inserito in una corrente di studi assai viva anche nella storia dell’arte postantica, alla cui caratterizzazione e diffusione lo stesso Zanker ha contribuito in modo decisivo. Tematica fondamentale comune alla maggioranza dei saggi è l’“autorappresentazione” dei differenti strati e gruppi sociali dell’impero romano, espressa attraverso la scelta e la selezione di immagini significative del rispettivo status: ma questa prospettiva è arricchita anche dallo studio dei meccanismi che presiedono alla scelta e alla fruizione delle immagini nei diversi spazi in cui si articolava la vita degli abitanti dell’impero; dall’analisi del continuo dialogo fra gli osservatori e le immagini emerge un quadro innovativo delle strutture della società e della psicologia collettiva di età imperiale, soprattutto per quanto riguarda l’autopercezione di singoli e gruppi. L’insistenza con cui nel mondo romano vengono rappresentati determinati temi mitologici, ma anche motivi gladiatori e immagini di violenza, non viene dunque letta, secondo la visione tradizionale, come un fenomeno di banalizzazione diffusa dell’immaginario greco, ma come il risultato della formazione di un complesso sistema di immagini collegate a valori e aspirazioni comuni della prima società “globale” della storia. La possibilità di accedere al contenuto di questi saggi in forma di raccolta organica e in lingua italiana costituisce un’opportunità notevole per la comunità scientifica degli archeologi italiani: attraverso di essi entrano in circolo approcci e spunti nuovi e densi di possibilità di sviluppo, grazie ai quali l’archeologia classica italiana potrà ricevere un’importante spinta al rinnovamento

Files required to reproduce the process tests detailed in the thesis are also provided with the relevant names and the scripts for running the individual-based model with the model flow fields parameterised for mackerel icefish.

Greek and Latin Expressions of Meaning
No full textVerbs and nouns of meaning in ancient Greek and Latin are polysemous, just as in the case of the English verb “to mean". Andreas T. Zanker considers how the ancient vocabulary could be used in different ways and investigates its development over time. In the first part of the book, Zanker argues for the role of metaphorical and metonymical transference in the creation of expressions of meaning; Greek and Roman authors used the same verbs to describe what inanimate things, including words and texts, meant/signified as they did of human beings in the act of meaning/signifying something. In the second part of the book, the author focuses on certain metaphorical extensions of this vocabulary and argues that they have implications for modern discussions of meaning, particularly in literary criticism.Verben und Substantive des Bedeutens sind mehrdeutig auf Altgriechisch und Latein. Andreas T. Zanker überlegt, wie das antike Vokabular in unterschiedlicher Weise benutzt werden konnte, und untersucht seine Entwicklung im Laufe der Zeit. Im ersten Teil des Buches argumentiert Zanker für die Rolle von metaphorischer und metonymischer Übertragung bei der Entstehung von Ausdrücken des Bedeutens; griechische und römische Schriftsteller benutzten die gleichen Verben, um die Bedeutungen von unbelebten Gegenständen (einschließlich Wörtern und Texten) wie auch die Absichten und Intentionen von Menschen zu artikulieren.
