Community Psychology Practice Competencies in Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Italy
This paper discuss several Community Psychology (CP) practice competencies learned in our existing undergraduate and graduate programs, which are similar to the ones taught in most international settings. It then describe some specific intervention methodologies that have been developed in Italy and in Europe. In the third part, the paper attempts to look at some of the challenges facing CP training programs in this time of crisis and uncertain future
Promoting civic engagement through Service Learning at Bologna University: a case study.
The chapter will present an analysis of the emergence and development of Service-Learning (S-L) at Bologna University, embedded in the Italian context, where the topic of S-L is new and only recently developed. What is peculiar to this situation, and deserves more attention, is the rapidity with which the idea and practice of S-L have emerged and have been implemented in few years. Starting in 2015 from about limited and not well-known experiences, the situation is now changed, a national network has been created, coordinated by Bologna team, and many initiatives are in progress that can be considered an outcome of the Europe Engage project
Biological rationale for targeting MEK/ERK pathways in anti-cancer therapy and to potentiate tumour responses to radiation
ERK1 and ERK2 (ERKs), two extracellular regulated kinases (ERK1/2), are evolutionary-conserved and ubiquitous serine-threonine kinases involved in regulating cell signalling in normal and pathological tissues. The expression levels of these kinases are almost always different, with ERK2 being the more prominent. ERK1/2 activation is fundamental for the development and progression of cancer. Since their discovery, much research has been dedicated to their role in mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathway signalling and in their activation by mitogens and mutated RAF or RAS in cancer cells. In order to gain a better understanding of the role of ERK1/2 in MAPK pathway signalling, many studies have been aimed at characterizing ERK1/2 splicing isoforms, mutants, substrates and partners. In this review, we highlight the differences between ERK1 and ERK2 without completely discarding the hypothesis that ERK1 and ERK2 exhibit functional redundancy. The main goal of this review is to shed light on the role of ERK1/2 in targeted therapy and radiotherapy and highlight the importance of identifying ERK inhibitors that may overcome acquired resistance. This is a highly relevant therapeutic issue that needs to be addressed to combat tumours that rely on constitutively active RAF and RAS mutants and the MAPK pathway
Predictors of civic and political participation among native and migrant Youth in Italy: the role of organizational membership, sense of community and perceived social well-being
The predictors of civic and political participation among native Italian and migrant Youth in Italy are the focus of this chapter, in which the authors investigate the explanatory role of organisational membership and the quality of participation in such organisations, testing two mediating factors of the association between organisational membership and civic and political participation drawn from theoretical perspecitves in community psychology: sense of community and social well being. The findings support the role of organisational membership among both majority and migrant Youth in Italy. They also confirm that the nature and quality of participatory activities and their potential for Learning and building competences are crucial factors, especially for migrants
Youth civic and political participation through the lens of gender. The Italian case
Italy is one of the European countries with the highest levels of gender inequalities (World Economic Forum 2011). The aims of this paper were to understand to what extent the well-documented gender gap in Italian adult society has an impact on both political and civic actions of younger generations, and whether the process of participation assumes specific features according to gender. 835 Italian participants (49.6% males; 50.4% female, aged from 16 to 26 years old; 20% under voting age) completed a self-administered questionnaire. Analyses confirmed general trends (voting at elections is the most frequently performed political action among Italian youth) and showed the existence of a small gender gap (a major orientation of young women toward civic action, while young men are more engaged in manifest political participation). The results confirmed that family cultural capital and normative support are significant predictors of political participation, in particular for girls and young women
