Over the last 10 years, the Malaysian rubber industry’s contribution to Malaysia export earnings has increased significantly from RM 15.5 billion in 2003 to RM 33.7 billion in 2013. Due to its importance, the Malaysian Rubber Industry is included in the Malaysia National Key Economic Area as it is forecasted to contribute RM 52.9 billion in Malaysia Gross Nation Income by 2020. The main aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive inventory and detailed quantification of the environmental impact and greenhouse gases emission (GHGs) for the major part of the Malaysian rubber industry comprising the cultivation of rubber tree from cradle to grave and its three independents components (nursey, immature rubber and mature rubber), and standard Malaysian rubber (SMR) production from cradle to gate. The research methodologies used were questionnaire surveys with the objective to create a very comprehensive life cycle inventories tables representing the actual activities in the Malaysian rubber industry. The quantification of the environmental impact for this study was evaluated using Simapro software version 7.3.3 with Eco-indicator 99 as the default methodology while the quantification of GHGs emission was evaluated based on the global warming potential from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 fourth assessment report using the same software. The results from the questionnaire survey indicate that the average annual consumption of ammonium sulphate and potassium chloride fertilizers in the cultivation of rubber trees from cradle to grave in Malaysia is estimated at 9.3% from total Malaysia consumption for 2014. The environmental impact from the average annual activities in the cultivation of rubber trees from cradle to grave in Malaysia represent 0.083% of the human health impact, 0.006% of the ecosystem quality impact and 0.111% of the resource depletion impact in Malaysia based on normalization procedure and these normalization results can be interpreted as representing 0.058% of the Malaysian environmental impact based on weighting procedure. The GHGs emission from the average annual activities in the cultivation of rubber trees from cradle to grave in Malaysia is 315.54 GgCO2eq and it represents 0.11% from the 2011 Malaysia GHGs emission. For the SMR production from cradle to gate, the environmental impact from the average annual production in Malaysia is 0.046% of the human health impact, 0.003% of the ecosystem quality impact and 0.176% of the resource depletion impact in Malaysia based on normalization procedure and can be summarized as representing 0.055% of the Malaysian environmental impact based on weighting procedure. The average annual GHGs emission from the production of SMR in Malaysia in this study is 229.41 GgCO2eq and it represent 72.7% from the average annual GHGs emission from the cultivation of rubber trees from cradle to grave in Malaysia for this study. The most significant aspect of this study is that this is the first LCA study ever carried out in Malaysia for the rubber industry

Mohamed Miloud Gharrafi, author of several collections of poems in Arabic, signed a bilingual anthology of his self-translated poems in 2014, supplemented by unpublished ones, entitled Échos lointains. He has agreed to talk with us about his practice as a writer and translator, and to present his vision of the act of translation and its relationship with creation, both in the case of self-translation and in the case of the translation of other poets, which he has experienced on several occasions. This reflection leads him to question the complex links, in poetry and its translation, between form and meaning. It also leads him to describe his relationship, both of filiation and rupture, with the Arab poetic tradition, as well as his multiple affiliations to various cultural and literary worlds

Tradurre la bande dessinée migrante. Il caso de Les Mohamed di Jérôme Ruillier

The comic book Les Mohamed (2011) by French author Jérôme Ruillier is situated in the landscape of migrant bande dessinée, with its own singular characteristics. In this work, the author traced a global portrait of Maghrebi immigrants in France, by adapting the documentary/book Mémoires d’immigrés (1997) by French-Algerian author Yamina Benguigui. As migrant storytellers in general, bande dessinée authors are often the first ‘translators’ of unknown or removed realities, making them accessible to a large public. But what happen when they are translated in their turn? In a first part, this article canvases the process of intersemiotic translation that brought from Mémoires d’immigrés to Les Mohamed. In a second part, it focuses on the verbal/visual aspects of Ruillier’s work and especially on the solutions I adopted in the Italian translation (Se ti chiami Mohamed 2015)

This article explores Mohamed Akounad\u27s novel Tawargit d imik, which focuses on protagonist Ssi Brahim who struggles to convey the essence of his religious sermons to an exclusively amazigh audience amidst societal opposition. By examining Ssi Brahim\u27s character as the author\u27s alter ego, the study aims to assess the novel\u27s portrayal of religious concerns and activism for Tamazight and identity, particularly in relation to orality. Employing a sociolinguistic approach drawing from Bourdieu\u27s Language and Symbolic Power, the analysis delves into the intersection of religion, authority, and language, placing orality at the heart of their role within the narrative. This study proposes a dual analytical approach, comprising textual and transtextual analyses, in order to unravel the protagonist\u27s journey and explore intertextual connections with sacred texts. Keywords: orality, intertextuality, language, linguistic capital, symbolic capital, Tamazight, religion, powe

The Argumentative Reason between Al-Ghazali and Averroes by Mohamed Ait Hammou [العقل الحجاجي بين الغزالي وابن رشد]: A Book Review (Full text in Arabic)

This article provides a critical scholarly review of Mohamed Ait Hammou's book, "The Argumentative Reason between Al-Ghazali and Averroes." It explores the dialectical tension between the "Argumentative Reason" (Al-’Aql al-Hujjaji) and "Demonstrative Logic" (Al-Burhan) within the Islamic philosophical tradition. The review analyzes how Al-Ghazali utilized a rigorous methodological critique to challenge the Greek ontological monopoly, while Averroes sought to harmonize religion and philosophy through his theory of Interpretation (Ta’wil). By examining the concepts of "Reason" and "Argumentation," the author highlights the ethical and methodological dimensions of the disagreement between these two intellectual giants. Furthermore, the review addresses the dual nature of Averroes’ writings and his critique of Kalam (theology). Ultimately, this work contributes to the contemporary understanding of the Moroccan philosophical school and its efforts to reconstruct the intellectual history of Islamic thought through a modern, critical lens

The size, origins, and character of Mongolia's informal sector during the transition

The explosion of informal entrepreneurial activity during Mongolia's transition to a market economy represents one of the most visible signs of change in this expansive but sparsely populated Asian country. To deepen our understanding of Mongolia's informal sector during the transition, the author merges anecdotal experience from qualitative interviews with hard data from a survey of 770 informals in Ulaanbaatar, from a national household survey, and from official employment statistics. Using varied sources, the author generates rudimentary estimates of the magnitude of, and trends in, informal activity in Mongolia, estimates that are surprisingly consistent with each other. He evaluates four types of reasons for the burst of informal activity in Mongolia since 1990: 1) The crisis of the early and mid-1990s, during which large pools of labor were released from formal employment. 2) Rural to urban migration. 3) The"market's"reallocation of resources toward areas neglected under the old system: services such as distribution and transportation. 4) The institutional environments faced by the formal and informal sectors: hindering growth of the formal sector, facilitating entry for the informal sector. Formal labor markets haven't absorbed the labor made available by the crisis and by migration and haven't fully responded to the demand for new services. The relative ease of entering the informal market explains that market's great expansion. The relative difficulty of entering formal markets is not random but is driven by policy. Improving policies in the formal sector could afford the same ease of entry there as is currently being experienced in the informal sector.Environmental Economics&Policies,Labor Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Health Economics&Finance,Public Health Promotion,Poverty Assessment,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Economics&Finance,National Governance,Health Monitoring&Evaluation
