Study design: Cross sectional study Place and duration of study: The Study was conducted at the Out-Patient Department of Combined Military Hospital, Lahore from January 2016-July 2016. Methods: Two hundred people from Combined Military Hospital Out-Patient of different departments Medicine, Surgery, ophthalmology and ENT) participated in the study. The questionnaire consisted of demographic information, awareness of Vitamin D, its sources, its beneficial effects, how Vitamin D effects different diseases. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 20. Chi-square test of significance was used to find the significance of association between independent variables with response variables. P-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Results from our research have shown that 78% of the participants had heard of Vitamin D and 60% of participants knew about its sources. Only 29% of people knew about the most beneficial exposure time for Vitamin D. The association of age and education status with knowledge of the source of Vitamin D was significant (p=0.001). The association between knowledge about Vitamin D and manifestation of rickets as its deficiency was also significant (p=0.002). However no statistically significant association was found between gender and knowledge about sources of Vitamin D. Conclusion: Results acquired have shown that although most of the people knew about Vitamin D and its sources like, still a significant proportion were unaware about it and its various sources like egg, fish oil and grains. Also, majority did not know about optimum sunlight exposure time for Vitamin D. Considering the importance of Vitamin D for human body, more awareness through health education is needed. Vitamin D deficiency is cause of many debilitating conditions which can be prevented simply by spreading awareness among people

    No full text
The present paper aims at analyzing The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy in the light of theoretical underpinnings of Jameson’s third world literature. The novel dawns upon the fragmented situations of Indian democracy and economy. In the current article, the idea of Aftab’s identity in the third world India is suggested which shows twists and turns in his life under the dynamics of socio-political realities. Moreover, the research delves in the national conflicts influencing the region of Kashmir where the lives of people allegorize with post-colonial fragmentation in the third world India. The key element of post-colonial marginal voices represents the power of third world India who is cause of suffering in the premises of Kashmir. The present study is qualitative in nature. It deploys the textual quotations and events of novel which allegorically refract the picture of third world India

Antibiotics production is the most emerging field worldwide with a constant need for the new ones to fight the microbial resistance. In this context, the research was pursued to isolate, characterize and screen for promising antibiotic-producing microbes from local soil. The soil bacterial isolates  (S1, S2, S3,S4, and S5) and fungal isolates (F1, F2, F4, F6, and F7) were selected and screened for antimicrobial activity against the Test bacteria by agar well diffusion and disc diffusion methods. Assays for Extracellular enzymes including Protease, Lipase, Lecithinase, Cellulase, and Amylase following the substrate hydrolysis were performed on different Agars such as Casein Agar, Tween 80 Agar, Egg Yolk Agar, Carboxymethylcellulose Agar, and Starch Agar respectively. The isolated microorganisms which produced antimicrobial compounds were identified as Bacillus, Actinomycetes, Streptomycetes, H. werneckii, A. niger, A. flavus, A. fumigatus and P. notatum on the basis of their cultural and microscopic characteristics and their optimum growth. The antimicrobial activity was determined by varying pH and NaCl concentrations. The research work revealed that among all isolates Actinomycetes (21%), P. notatum  (29%) and H. werneckii (21%) showed maximum bioactivities against the test organisms and all isolates exhibited at least four of the tested enzymes

Background; Spinal tuberculosis is a very serious kind of skeletal tuberculosis which occurs very frequently in adults. The basic objective of the study is to trace out the chances of safety and efficacy by treating the monosegmental lumbar tuberculosis in adults through one-stage posterior debridement and transpedicular screw fixation. Material and Methods; About 41 patients were observed retrospectively during this study. The imagery data, numerical data for mean surgery time, loss of blood during surgery, VAS Score, preoperative complications, bony fusion time and preoperative & postoperative neurological function was gathered. Results; Mean follow up period was observed about 13.6 ±2.7 months. The rate of cure after surgery was maximum in patients and no chances of recurrence were observed. Neurological outcome did not change in one case with grade A and increased by 1 to 3 grades in other patients with nerve deficit. The mean preoperative VAS score was 9.2 ± 2.13 and mean postoperative VAS score was 2.5 ± 1.32, respectively; and the difference was also significant

Exploring Antibiotic Resistance and Exopolysaccharide Production in Bacillus Paramycoides from Wastewater

Antibiotics have been found extensively in the environment, particularly in groundwater, sediments, and surface water. The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria from wastewater collected from sewage (Sher Shah Colony, Raiwind) and an industrial area (Hudiara Drain Gajju Matta) in Lahore. Ten bacterial strains (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, Z9, and Z10) were isolated from the samples. All of these strains were gram-positive. Antibiotic resistance profiling showed that strain Z1 was most resistant to ampicillin (1500 μg/ml) among all of the antibiotics (tetracycline, penicillin, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol) that were tested. A growth curve study revealed that these strains showed constitutive enzyme activity. Exopolysaccharide (EPS) production of strains Z1 and Z3 was 1.34±0.010 g/L and 1.35±0.011 g/L, respectively, under non stress conditions, while in the presence of ampicillin stress, strain Z1 produced higher EPS (1.61±0.017 g/L) than strain Z3 (0.85±0.012 g/L). Thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis of the extracted EPS of strain Z1 showed that it contained carbohydrates and amino acids. Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) study of EPS produced by strain Z1 showed that it is made up of many different functional groups, including alkenes, alkynes, and carboxylic acids. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed that EPS became firmly connected to the cells in the presence of stress. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain Z1 (OR177988) showed 100% homology with the Bacillus paramycoides (MCCC1A04098). The findings contribute to the understanding of the microbial ecology of wastewater systems and highlight the need for further research on biofouling, bacterial adaptability, and the potential implications for public health and the environment

Background; Macroscopic haematuria is a commonly seen condition in the emergency department (ED), which has a variety of causes. This study was performed to ascertain frequency of macroscopic hematuria among patients undergoing native renal biopsy using free hands ultrasound assisted renal biopsy technique within first 24 hours, as there is no such study done in Pakistan on this topic. Objective: To determine frequency of macroscopic haematuria after native renal biopsy using free hands ultrasound assisted renal biopsy technique within first 24hours. Material and Methods: A total of 138 patients from Department of Nephrology; Shalamar hospital, Lahore, Pakistan were taken for macroscopic hematuria. Data was analyzed by SPSS. Results; Of these 138 study cases, 91 (65.9 %) were male patients while 47 (34.1%) were female patients. Mean age of our study cases was 47.57 ± 7.26 years (with minimum age of our study cases was 35 years while maximum age was 60 years). Of these 138 study cases, 56 (40.6%) belonged to rural areas and 82 (59.4%) belonged to urban areas. Monthly family income up to Rs. 350000 was noted in 67 (48.6%) while more than 35000 rupees 71 (51.4%) of our study cases. Obesity was present in 41 (29.7 %) of our study cases. Chronic kidney disease (un-explained renal failure) was noted in 77 (55.8%), proteinuria in 46(33.3%) and unresolved AKI in 15 (10.9%) of our study cases. Mean needle size was noted 17.15 ± 0.59 and 86 (62.3%) had needle size with gauge 18. Macroscopic hematuria was noted in 30 (21.7%) of our study case. Conclusion; High frequency of macroscopic hematuria after native renal biopsy using free hands ultrasound assisted renal biopsy technique was noted in our study. Macroscopic hematuria was significantly associated with male gender, increasing age, residential status, monthly family income and indications for renal biopsy. The early diagnosis followed by corrective/preventive measures can help decrease disease morbidity among targeted population. This will help decrease disease burden and improve quality of life of these patients. Keywords; Macroscopic Hematuria, Native Renal Biopsy, Chronic Kidney Disease
