Traces and shards of self-injury: Strange accounting with “Author X”

    No full text
In this strange account autoethnography, three or four authors explore their lived experiences with self-injury. Strange accounting is both a post-modern style of text, and a method for keeping identities concealed when risks and secrets are in play. Author X, a post-modern place-keeper for an anonymous author who may or may not have contributed to this manuscript, introduces a new dimension and layer of concealment. With Author X in-play and under erasure, the reader will never be sure if there were three or four authors on this manuscript. Through strange accounting, a post-structuralist/postmodernist frame will be applied to understanding the self-injury experience. We frame self-injury as a social practice and, for some, an everyday norm, while remaining acutely aware of the stigma surrounding the topic of self-injury. Each of us, coupled with Author X, provide the others cover to trace stories of self-injury through the literature, our flesh, and our lives

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    No full text
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

Random walk evaluation of Green's functions for groundwater flow in heterogeneous aquifers

    No full text
The use of the Walk on Grid (WOG) approach for the reliable evaluation of the Green's function associated with groundwater flow scenarios in heterogeneous geologic media is explored. The study rests on the observation that, while the Green's function method (GFM) is one of the most significant and convenient approaches to tackle groundwater flow, Green's function evaluation is fraught with remarkable difficulties in the presence of realistic groundwater settings taking place in complex heterogeneous geologic formations. Here WOG approach is used to simulate pressure dissipation by lattice random walk and establish a quantitative relationship between space-time distribution of random walkers and the Green's function associated with the underlying flow problem. WOG-based Green's function method is tested (a) in three scenarios where analytical formulations are available for the Green's function and (b) in two groundwater flow systems with increased level of complexity. Our results show that WOG can (a) accurately evaluate the Green's function, being highly efficient when the latter can be analytically expressed in terms of infinite series; and (b) accurately and efficiently evaluate temporal evolutions of hydraulic heads at target locations in the heterogeneous systems. As such, a WOG-based approach can be employed as an efficient surrogate model in scenarios involving groundwater flow in complex heterogeneous domains

Lost In Translation? A Report Into Action Research On The Effects Of Interpretation On Learning And Teaching

    No full text
This paper follows from Zeng and Burrows (2013), in which the issue of the effects of interpretation on learning and teaching was introduced. Action research was completed in China in 2013 and this paper reports some of the analysis and results of that research. A number of issues were identified and these are of interest to all practitioners, as they are pertinent to both general and specific teaching practice. The learning process is, in the main, a dialogue between teachers and learners. However, there are many occasions for triangulation, for example, language interpretation, signing and use of amanuenses. This small-scale action research project has highlighted some of the issues inherent in teaching and learning through interpretation, but the points raised by the research can inform practice in all situations
