    No full text
This study aims at to conduct a comparative analysis of performance of on the impact of global financial crisis on Islamic and conventional banking in Pakistan during the period the 2007-2010. Three performance indicators have been considered for this purpose namely profitability, liquidity & Soundness. This study covers a four year period from 2007 to 2010.Based on the performance of 2007 the impact has been analyzed by using financial ratios as analysis tool. The financial ratios like Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Loan to Asset Ratio(LAR), Loan to Deposit ratio (LDR), Assets Utilization(AU), Debt to equity Ratio(DER) and Income to Expense ratio(IER) are used to evaluate performance of sample banks. Primary data was also collected through survey by using a closed ended questionnaire. The study explores two main findings (I) there seems no any major variation in liquidity & profitability of both types of the commercial banks (II) the Islamic banks hold more liquid assets than conventional banks- counterparts, which affected their liquidity. While analyzing it was also concluded that cost of deposit on conventional side increased as compared to Islamic Banking and Non Performing Loans were increased after multi year stability and control on healthy loans on conventional side

This study aims at to conduct a performance analysis of six big banks of Pakistan during the global financial crisis during the period of 2008 to 2012 Year 2007 has been selected as base year. Various financial ratios have been calculated to evaluate the performance of the banking sector in terms of liquidity, profitability and stability. This study covers a five year period from 2008 to 2012 where as year 2007 has been considered as base year. The performance has been analyzed by using financial ratios as measurement tool. The financial ratios such as Profit Before tax ratio, Gross spread ratio, Return on Equity, Gross profit ratio Gross Advances to Deposits ratio, Cash & Portfolio Investment to Deposit Ratio are used to gauge the performance of selected banks. Moreover their credit portfolio has been examined to ascertain their performing loans status. While conducting the research it concluded that selected banks have adversely been affected, deposits were withdrawn considerably and cost of deposit increased to maintain the books. Non Performing Loans were also accumulated due to increase in interest rates

Characterization of spliceosome assembly in cyanidioschyzon merolae.

Pre-mRNA splicing is the removal of intervening sequences from pre-messenger RNA in a reaction catalyzed by the spliceosome, which contains five small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) and more than 100 proteins. Assembly of the spliceosome occurs in a highly ordered manner, making the spliceosome a very complex and dynamic particle. The spliceosome has been studied in yeast and humans but a simpler system would simplify splicing studies. Cyanidioschyzon merolae (Cm) has been shown to have a simpler spliceosome. The goal of this study was to characterize the Cm spliceosome beginning with the question of how large it is. To measure the size of the Cm spliceosome I used glycerol gradient centrifugation and assembly gels to study the assembly pathways. Lastly an attempt was made to study the components of Cm spliceosome by developing an assay in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) where small molecule inhibitors were used to stall the spliceososme, which could then be purified and its composition studied. --Leaf ii.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b197654

Objective: In our part of the world poverty and illiteracy has adversely affected our core objective of pregnancy i.e. healthy mother and healthy child. Exploring the role of a routinely used drug in reducing the duration of labor could be a breakthrough. Present study was planned accordingly to evaluate the effect of phloroglucinol (PHL). Materials and Methods: It was a Randomized controlled trial conducted at Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Combined Military Hospital, Bahawalpur from January 2019 to June 2019. This study included 60 cases of age 18 to 40 years, having singleton pregnancy and in active first stage of uncomplicated labor. Patients with history of multiple pregnancies, obstetrical and surgical complications and cardiorespiratory diseases were excluded. The cases were placed randomly into Group A & Group B and given intravenous PHL and a placebo respectively. After this, duration of the first stage of labor was recorded in minutes from when there was 3-4 cm cervical dilatation with regular uterine contractions to complete cervical dilation i.e. 10 cm and descent of the presenting fetal part. Results: Mean duration of active first stage of labor in experimental group A (230.20 ± 52.96 minutes) was significantly higher than that of control group B (345.30 ± 50.57 minutes). Conclusion: This study concluded that intravenous PHL has efficiently reduced the duration of active first stage of labor in these randomly selected nulliparous and multiparous women. PHL is a useful drug serving the purpose of a spasmolytic, analgesic and labor augmentation at the same time

    Market Varying Conditional Risk-Return Relationship

Unlike previous studies conducted on Pakistan, this article attempts to test the validity of conditional relationship between beta and cross-sectional returns of individual securities listed in Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE), wherein the up and down market periods are separated. The risk-return relationship is also tested using the conventional CAPM to compare the results of both models. The return on market portfolio and risk free asset is proxied by KSE-100 share index return and three months T-bill. Fama and McBeth (1973) and Pettengill, et al. (1995) methods are used to test conventional and conditional risk-return relationship, respectively. The analysis is performed on individual stocks of thirty companies over the period 2004 to 2012. Findings indicate a consistent and significant positive risk return relationship in up market periods where market excess returns are positive; whereas, an inverse risk-return relationship is not proved in down market periods where market excess returns are negative. Furthermore, the study finds no support for symmetry between up and down market periods. The major implication of the analysis is that beta can be a useful measure of risk only in up markets periods

Laughing with an Iranian American Woman: Firoozeh Dumas\u27s Memoirs and the (Cross-) Cultural Work of Humor

This essay critically analyzes Firoozeh Dumas\u27s humorous memoirs and situates them in the multiple contexts of post-9/11 Muslim American responses to Islamophobia, women\u27s humor, and Iranian American women\u27s life writing. Drawing on philosophical, feminist, ethnic, and contemporary scientific theories of humor and the methods of literary criticism, the author argues that Dumas employs the beneficial and inclusive (not malign and exclusive) positive mode of humorous personal storytelling to build connection through laughter via the emotional and cognitive shifts structurally central to humor. Dumas addresses multiple audiences and engages in important (cross-) cultural work in a particularly fraught political and cultural climate of anti-Muslim sentiment and tense Iran-U.S. relations

Kashmiri life is expendable for the Indian state. While the love for the land is close to national imaginaries, the people have been subjected to decades of abuse and violence, and infringement of their basic human rights. In this book, Hafsa Kanjwal delves into the history of Kashmir, tracing the role of two pivotal political figures – Sheikh Abdullah (1947–1953) and Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad (1953–1963) – and their relationship with the Indian project of state-building in Kashmir. The author characterizes this as the ‘politics of life’ (9), where the Indian government and client regimes in Kashmir have normalized occupation with the propagation of ‘development, empowerment and progress’ along with bureaucratic integration and the forging of affective intimate relationships with the people of the state. However, the politics of life and appeals to emotions did not mean that there was an absence of coercive measures used by the Indian state to shape conforming and confronting subjectivities

Beyond Blood Sugar: The Effects of Weight Change on HbA1c and Diabetes

    No full text
Abstract: Diabetes, a chronic disease characterised by hyperglycaemia, affects millions worldwide. Despite various treatments, weight management may affect the complications of disease. Weight gain and diabetes have been researched for decades. This review examined the relationship between weight loss and HbA1c level improvements among diabetes, the effects of weight loss on other diabetes outcomes, the factors of individual response to weight management, long-term HbA1c control, and the conditions under which weight reduction may be effective. Hence, diabetes, weight change, HbA1c, and other MeSH terms and keywords were searched in PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and CINAHL. We cross-referenced relevant articles' reference lists and intensively searched grey literature including conference proceedings, preprints, government reports, and institutional research papers. This research reveals that diabetics' HbA1c control improves with sustained weight loss. Despite individual variation and restrictions, the findings underline the need of weight management in diabetes therapy. The findings emphasis the need of including weight-management strategies into comprehensive diabetes treatment plans, while acknowledging both individual differences and constraints. Subsequent studies should include these characteristics and modify the suggestions appropriately, while also evaluating the long-term outcomes and determining effective strategies for achieving weight reduction in individuals with diabetes
