The Davanzali necropolis of Numana (AN). From the archaeological context to the virtual environment

    No full text
The paper focuses on the issues of archaeological interpretation of the Quagliotti-Davanzali necropolis of Numana (AN) in relation to the virtual reconstruction of the context. The first step of this process is the reconstruction of the necropolis at the time of the excavation. This reconstruction is realized through the analysis and elaboration of the wide archival documentation produced during the archaeological campaigns. The study then focuses on the archaeological analysis of some specific sectors of the necropolis and on how digital models can effectively support this investigation. The limits and the potentialities of the experimented methods for the creation of the models are subsequently highlighted. Finally, a reflection is proposed on the future perspectives of the project in relation to the overall study of the necropolis, with a preliminary application of 3D modelling on the entire funerary area, in particular in its last phase of attendance. Indeed, for this last stage an optimal interpolation between the excavation data and the new research carried out in the field can be achieved, with a view to an integrated reading and a consequent virtual representation of the ancient funerary landscape

With the purpose of initiating a systematic study of the landscape of the Etruscan port of Spina and investigating the internal articulation of the settlement and the relationship between its various functional areas, a new research project of the University of Bologna (EOS Project) has recently been launched. The present contribution aims to outline the methodological premises of the investigation and to present its preliminary results, as well as future prospects. It will focus in particular on the possibilities offered by the analysis of aerial photography and the integration of several non-invasive archaeological methods (remote and proximal sensing, geophysics, field survey) in the geomorphological analysis and in the reconstruction of the ancient landscape

Non-invasive procedures for the evaluation of pre-Roman burial sites: new case studies from the Mid-Adriatic area

The paper focuses on several sites in the northern Marche region identified by the presence of circular traces detected by remote sensing and tentatively interpreted as funerary monuments of the pre-Roman period. After a brief overview of this characteristic type of archaeological evidence, the results of recent field activities aimed at studying these sites with an integrated approach, including remote and proximal sensing, geophysics and field survey, are presented. The final aim is the theorisation of operational intervention protocols, functional for both territorial research and the safeguarding of the buried archaeological heritage, as part of a prevention strategy based on the non-invasive characterisation of contexts

This paper moves from a recent research project started by the Chair of Etruscology of the University of Bologna in 2020, with the intent to investigate the internal articulation of the Etruscan settlement of Spina and the relationship between its residential and funerary areas. Among the numerous remote and proximal sensing activities recently carried out during the project, was also undertaken an aerial photography acquisition campaign using UAVs, whose results will be discussed here. Starting from the analysis of a substantial topographical documentation (edited and unpublished) it was possible to arrive at a better definition of the problems potentiality of this territory, which undergone complex changes over the centuries, from the Etruscan times up to the land reclamation of the last century. The project allowed to verify on the field the most problematic aspects that emerged from the analysis of previous documentation; the drone photogrammetric survey activities, had the ultimate goal to better define some topographical aspects not yet systematically investigated and not otherwise documented. The application of this methodology made it possible to contextualize in a more precise way various evidences attributable to the Etruscan center, in particular the necropolis of Valle Trebba and Valle Pega, scarcely notes under the topographical profile and planimetric articulation

The paper aims to explain the analytical method used to virtually recreate the houses of the Etruscan city of Marzabotto. As stated in the title, the starting point of the process was the analysis conducted on the tangible archaeological evidence of building materials; these latter were fully integrated with data provided by the ancient sources and the latest technology. Next, the problems and the solutions adopted in order to recreate the houses are presented. In the last section the criteria used for the visual restitution of the unexcavated context of the ancient city are explained
