The deeply devout Johanna Eleonora Petersen, whose maiden name was „von und zu Merlau,” changed the religious world of the seventeenth century. She avowed herself to Pietism and held radical views, not only in private but also as an acknowledged and sharply criticized theological author. This study attends to her work. It presents new research results and weaves the life and work of this important author into contemporary discourses
This work analyses the notion of defective product originally developed by US Courts, then ambiguously defined by the European directive n. 374 of 1985 and differently interpreted and applied by the respective domestic Courts. In particular, some European jurisdictions apply the risk / utility test introduced by the US Courts for design defects cases, although this test is not mentioned by the European Directive. The author, having highlighted the inconsistences of the risk / utility test, proposes an alternative model of classification of defective products according to the elements actually used by judges in order to allocate the liability, as emerging from the text of their decisions. This classification leads to held the manufacturer strictly liable not only for manufacturing defects, but also for those design defects which he was aware of (as in some cases of defective vaccine).Cette étude examine la notion de défectuosité du produit initialement élaborée par les Cours américaines, définie de manière ambigüe par le législateur européen avec la directive n° 374 de 1985, puis différemment interprétée et appliquée par les Cours respectives des pays membres. Hebb's idea of a cell assembly as the fundamental unit of neural information processing has dominated neuroscience like no other theoretical concept within the past 60 years. A range of different physiological phenomena, from precisely synchronized spiking to broadly simultaneous rate increases, has been subsumed under this term. Yet progress in this area is hampered by the lack of statistical tools that would enable to extract assemblies with arbitrary constellations of time lags, and at multiple temporal scales, partly due to the severe computational burden. Here we present such a unifying methodological and conceptual framework which detects assembly structure at many different time scales, levels of precision, and with arbitrary internal organization. Applying this methodology to multiple single unit recordings from various cortical areas, we find that there is no universal cortical coding scheme, but that assembly structure and precision significantly depends on the brain area recorded and ongoing task demands
Silicon nitride membranes nanostencils for patterning and contacting of graphene
Graphene, with his high carrier mobility in the order of hundreds of thousand cm2/Vs has been viewed in recent year as a promising candidate for future high speed electronic devices.
Furthermore, the optical properties of graphene make it particularly suitable for opto electronic integrated devices, especially in nanoscale, since we are dealing with a monolayer material, with thickness of 0.34 nm, which dimensions are typically of some microns.
In this thesis we are investigating the possibility to create grapheme contacts using the focused ion beam (FIB) techniques, meaning that such contacts will be totally contamination free, since no chemical process such as lithography is involved.
The milling of graphene, that is the cut of graphene with focused ion beam, will be done trough thin Si3N4 membranes, of approximately 200nm, in order to reduce the structural defects and redeposition that typically occurs in focused ion beam processes.
Side projects like the fabrications of this membranes and the study of the membranes strenght and stress are included in this work, together with the fabrication of stenciling masks using FIB, in order to deposite this gold contact on graphene flakes and study the electrical properties of this material

Tra quadro e cornice
The author presents a reconstruction of the experience she had in Pontedera when she saw some performances of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards and took part to some works of the group. The text is composed by two parts: a descriptive and a theoretical one. In the first part, that she called “paintings”, the author tries to present his memory of what she saw and of what happened. Two plays are described, namely L’heure fugitive and The Underground, from the Focused Research Team in Art as a Vehicle, directed by Thomas Richards. After that, there is a description of open rehearsal of Thomas Richards’ group, in which the actors did singing exercises. The last activity was instead a singing session with Mario Biagini and his team, where the author and her colleagues participated actively. In the theoretical part, the author exposes her reflections concerning performances and other experiences, by focusing in particular on their meaning as well as on their major points of interest
Pt-based Thin Films as Efficient and Stable Catalysts for Oxygen Electroreduction
This thesis presents the fabrication and characterization of Pt-based thin film catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR). Gadolinium and Yttrium have been used as alloying materials, in preparation for the replacement of the traditional but economically disadvantageous pure Pt catalysts at the cathode of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs).Herein the fabrication method, which consists of co-sputtering of thin films, is presented in detail, explaining the challenges one must face in order to fabricate oxygen-free Pt-lanthanides and Pt-early transition metals alloys, and the proposed solutions. The characterization of the catalysts focused mainly on the electrochemical testing using a Rotating Ring Disk Electrode (RRDE) setup, and includes X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), Angle-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (AR-XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS).The investigated films included pure Pt sputtered thin films, as well as PtxGd and PtxY thin film alloys of different compositions and thicknesses, with the aim of a model study to pursue more active and stable ORR catalysts. While the Pt and PtxGd films were deposited at DTU Physics, the PtxY alloys were fabricated at Chalmers University, which has been collaborating in the NACORR project. When tested electrochemically, 50 nm thick Pt5Gd thin film catalysts exhibited a 4.5-fold enhancement in activity at 0.9 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen electrode (RHE) compared with polycrystalline Pt. This value increases to a 7-fold enhancement for 30 nm thick Pt3Y films. Moreover, pure Pt thin films showed an activity which was roughly double the one recorded for polycrystalline Pt, and this could be due to the different kind of surfaces generated by sputtering. Both the Pt5Gd and Pt3Y films maintain over 80 % of the initial ORR activity when cycled 10000 times between 0.6 and 1.0 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M HClO4, and that is an indicator of the good stability of these catalysts. Investigation of the films through XRD showed that a metallic alloy structure is formed, matching the structure of polycrystalline samples. XPS and EDX analyses confirmed the composition of the alloys, proving good control of the co-deposition rates of the sputter chamber. With this techniques, it was possible to observe the formation of a thick, strained Pt overlayer, which is probably responsible for the activity enhancement.A study of the thickness of Pt3Y alloys revealed that the thin film formation during sputtering happened by island growth, and showed that smooth films were obtained when the thickness was equal or above 27 nm.A brief study was conducted at Stanford University, in collaboration with the Jaramillo group and SLAC, on Pt and Pt5Gd films deposited via evaporation. The results underlined the importance of an oxygen-free environment when dealing with Pt-lanthanides thin film fabrication

The Author analyses, among many possible meanings of citizenship, two types which had a part in the process of modern State building: citizenship is sometimes a relationship between the individual and the sovereign, sometimes consciousness of a collective membership. Both meanings have a link with the sovereignty and the process of modern State building. After the “great Neutralisation” of the Nineteenth Century, some reflections are developed about the relationship between citizenship and sovereignty in the Twentieth Century. Finally, the Author emphasizes the necessity of a statute that sets the requirements needed to become a citizen in order to pacify the conflicts of multicultural societies
