Looking back, the central purpose of this article is to answer pivotal questions about Papandreou and his career. What have been the major turning points in his life? What were his main beliefs? What motivated him and his politics? What were his political priorities and methods? What did he want to achieve as prime minister? Why did he become so involved in foreign policy issues? What were his assets as prime minister? Did they outweigh his shortcomings as a politician and leader? Did power change him and how? What will be Papandreou's place in history?.Published versio

Prostasomes: a role in prostatic disease?

No full text
Prostasomes are membrane-bound secretory vesicles, in the nanometre diameter range, secreted by the prostatic ductal epithelium [1] into the lumen, where they form part of the ejaculate. Although known to have specific biological properties, their physiological role and overall significance remain far more debatable. There has been comparatively little written about these structures since their detection two decades ago, and this may help explain the relative lack of awareness of prostasomes within the urological community

Poročilo z Mednarodne konference o klasičnih študijah (Atene - Delfi, 3.-5. aprila 2003)

No full text

The ‘Μegaron’ Concerto For Guitar and String Orchestra by Nikita Koshkin: An Exploration of Performance Issues, a Performing Edition and a CD Recording

No full text
This dissertation puts the spotlight on the music of Nikita Koshkin (b. 1956)—Russia’s most important composer for guitar and one of the world’s leading composers for the instrument—and, in particular, his ‘Megaron’ Concerto for guitar and string orchestra, composed in 2005 and premiered in 2006 by this author. Performance issues are discussed in detail, in an innately practical manner, so that the guitarist who wishes to perform this work will have enough information to assist him. Moreover, a guitar instructor will find valuable guidance, not only for teaching this particular piece and other guitar music by Koshkin, but with regard to the training of students in guitar performance in general. It also explores the manner in which guitar technique serves interpretation. In the latter respect, this dissertation covers pioneering ground in terms of pedagogical studies of guitar repertoire. The ‘Megaron’ Concerto is scrutinised according to the following features, which are indicating specific details of the Concerto: Dynamics; Articulation and Phrasing; Note Duration; Apoyando and Tirando; Fingering; Vibrato; Special percussive effects; Additional comments about slurring, and stopping unnecessary and dissonant resonance. These aspects are generalised throughout the so-called ‘General Remarks’, which can be arguably applied to almost any other guitar piece. En route, this dissertation presents an overview of the history of the guitar in Russia, a detailed biography of Koshkin and a discussion of the evolution of the guitar concerto as a genre. It also includes a performance edition of the ‘Megaron’ Concerto, featuring both the guitar part and the orchestral score, with detailed fingering for the soloist and changes from Koshkin’s initial score of 2005, carried out by this author with the composer’s approval. A CD recording of the Concerto by the prestigious Swedish company BIS is also included, along with a detailed plan of the way by which it was recorded

Wpływ ideologii na język. Przypadek dyktatury wojskowej w Grecji w latach 1967–1974

No full text
Praca przedstawia sytuację języka w Grecji w latach 1967–1974, w okresie tzw. dyktatury czarnych pułkowników. Zamach stanu, jaki miał miejsce 21 kwietnia 1967 r., wniósł wiele zmian w życiu społecznym, politycznym i kulturalnym Greków. Jeden z nich to przemówienie lidera opozycji politycznej – Georgiosa Papandreou (21 kwietnia 1968 r.), drugi zaś to przemówienie czołowego polityka dyktatury wojskowej – Georgiosa Papadopoulosa – z początku dyktatury (28 września 1968 r.). Konfrontacja obydwu tekstów na płaszczyźnie filologicznej stanowi podstawę wniosków o wpływie ideologii politycznej na język. Praca zawiera polskie przekłady powyższych tekstów.The paper discusses the linguistic situation in Greece in the period from 1967 to 1974, in the epoch of the so-called black colonels. The coup d’état which took place on 21st of April 1967 changed immensely the social, political and cultural life of the Greek. The dictatorship leaders imposed not only extremely right-wing political regime but they also tried to influence the culture of Greece by putting into practice their political ideas. The article aims at showing the influence of the political ideas on (i) the development of language as a system and (ii) the development of language as a tool used for formulating utterances. The analysed material included two texts of 1968. One of them was the speech of the leading oppositional politician Georgios Papandreou (21 April 1968). The second one was the speech of the leading politician of military dictatorship Georgios Papadopoulos which was delivered at the beginning of junta (28 September 1968). The philological comparison of these two texts constitutes the base of conclusions about the influence of the political ideology on the language. The paper includes translations of the mentioned speeches from Greek into Polish

Spin transfer measurements of the pi d (polarized) ---> p p (polarized) reaction spanning the Delta resonance

No full text
The first spin-transfer observables for the πd→pp reaction have been measured at a number of energies spanning the Δ resonance in this system. These parameters correspond to KSL and KSS of the pp→dπ reaction for incident proton energies ranging from 600 to 800 MeV. Such data can provide an important constraint on the determination of the partial-wave amplitudes describing this fundamental reaction. The discrepancies between our data, theoretical predictions, and values calculated from published partial-wave amplitudes demonstrate the need for further work in this area

Approaching mythology in the history curriculum of compulsory education in Greece

No full text
Myth can be a first step in historicizing the past and at the same time in appreciating ancient cultures and developing the essential skill of empathy. A main objective of the history curriculum for the third grade of primary school in Greece is for children at 8 and 9 years old to familiarize themselves with the basic cultural elements of the origins of Greek, European and global civilization. Ancient Greek myths are taught using references and links to the myths of other peoples and cultures, and by identifying similarities and differences in the interpretation of the world within the framework of a multi-perspective, intercultural approach. Myths also depict the relationship between man and nature. They constitute man’s attempt to interpret the physical and social environment. In addition, myths present the relationship between man and the divine in the early stages of cultural evolution, and at the same time provide evidence of the culture of a historical period. Pupils become aware of the fact that myths used to have a symbolic and ritualistic function, which aimed to initiate younger members into the acceptable practices and values of their community. Myths provided meaningful models of action (exempla) through their allegorical nature. Moreover, myths facilitate the analysis of human behaviour by introducing the schema of cause and effect. Mythical thought seeks to understand causality, which is also the primary aim of science. In this sense, mythical discourse is connected to scientific discourse. Within the framework of a methodological approach based on these theoretical assumptions, this paper also includes a presentation of educational activities and pupils’ perceptions as part of a survey conducted in a third-grade primary school class in Greece

'Flux+Mutability': A Conditional Generative Approach to One-class Classification and Anomaly Detection

No full text
Anomaly Detection is becoming increasingly popular within the experimental physics community. At experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider, anomaly detection is growing in interest for finding new physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper details the implementation of a novel Machine Learning architecture, called Flux+Mutability, which combines cutting-edge conditional generative models with clustering algorithms. In the 'flux' stage we learn the distribution of a reference class. The 'mutability' stage at inference addresses if data significantly deviates from the reference class. We demonstrate the validity of our approach and its connection to multiple problems spanning from one-class classification to anomaly detection. In particular, we apply our method to the isolation of neutral showers in an electromagnetic calorimeter and show its performance in detecting anomalous dijets events from standard QCD background. This approach limits assumptions on the reference sample and remains agnostic to the complementary class of objects of a given problem. We describe the possibility of dynamically generating a reference population and defining selection criteria via quantile cuts. Remarkably this flexible architecture can be deployed for a wide range of problems, and applications like multi-class classification or data quality control are left for further exploration.Data Scienc

Effects of low vitamin D status in rickets and type 1 diabetes in children

No full text
PurposeThis paper aims to review the metabolism, epidemiology and treatment of vitamin D and calcium insufficiency as well as its relation to rickets and diabetes type 1 during childhood and adolescence.Design/methodology/approachThe most up‐to‐date and pertinent studies within the literature are included in this narrative review.FindingsVitamin D deficiency is common in developing countries and exists in both childhood and adult life. The great importance of vitamin D is the moderation of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) homeostasis as well as the absorption of Ca. While insufficiency of vitamin D is a significant contributing factor to the risk of rickets in childhood, it is possible that a more marginal deficiency of vitamin D during life span contributes to osteoporosis as well as potentially to the development of various other chronic diseases such as diabetes type 1.Originality/valueThis paper gives a concise, up‐to‐date overview to nutritionists and dietitians on how vitamin D deficiency may effect rickets and type 1 diabetes.</jats:sec
