    No full text
In this article the author dealt with what Toru Terada (1915-1995) thought of Shusei Tokuda (1871-1943) and also with Terada's own literary position. Terada made clear in Shusei's later novels ( and )the agony caused by insatiable lust and also thought that Shusei was a non-intellectual. When he published his article on Shusei Tokuda, Terada himself got divorced and also got remarried -- he himself worried about a relationship with his partner. This article showed a relationship between Terada's sympathy for Shusei Tokuda and his own personal life. Moreover, it dealt with how a literary work was understood by its readers.論文(Article)departmental bulletin pape

Evolutionary loss of complexity in human vocal anatomy as an adaptation for speech

    No full text
Human speech production obeys the same acoustic principles as vocal production in other animals but has distinctive features: A stable vocal source is filtered by rapidly changing formant frequencies. To understand speech evolution, we examined a wide range of primates, combining observations of phonation with mathematical modeling. We found that source stability relies upon simplifications in laryngeal anatomy, specifically the loss of air sacs and vocal membranes. We conclude that the evolutionary loss of vocal membranes allows human speech to mostly avoid the spontaneous nonlinear phenomena and acoustic chaos common in other primate vocalizations. This loss allows our larynx to produce stable, harmonic-rich phonation, ideally highlighting formant changes that convey most phonetic information. Paradoxically, the increased complexity of human spoken language thus followed simplification of our laryngeal anatomy.Complexity from simplification Human speech and language are highly complex, consisting of a large number of sounds. The human phonal apparatus, the larynx, has acquired the capability to create a wider array of sounds, even though previous work has revealed many similarities between our larynx and those in other primates. Looking across a large number of primates, Nishimura et al . used a combination of anatomical, phonal, and modeling approaches to characterize sound production in the larynx (see the Perspective by Gouzoules). They found that instead of the human larynx having increased complexity, it has actually simplified relative to other primates, allowing for clearer sound production with less aural chaos. —SNVThe human larynx has undergone evolutionary simplification, facilitating the increased acoustic complexity of the spoken language

A nanosheet molding method to estimate the size of bilayers suspended in liquids

Sasaki K., Hernandez Gaitan J.A., Tokuda Y., et al. A nanosheet molding method to estimate the size of bilayers suspended in liquids. Journal of Materials Chemistry C 10, 15816 (2022); https://doi.org/10.1039/D2TC03765C.Various methods have been developed to determine the size of molecular bilayer structures dispersed in liquids. We focused on the nanosheet (NS) growth inside the bilayers in hyperswollen lamellar (HL) phases. Here, we propose the method to evaluate the size of bilayers in liquid by observing palladium NSs (PdNSs) growing rapidly in the bilayers of the HL phase. It uncovered that the width of PdNSs depends on methanol concentration, on which the stability of the HL phase also depends. Considering that the stability of the HL phase is positively correlated with the width of bilayers, we concluded that the observation of PdNSs probably corresponds to the indirect measurement of the width of bilayers. This method will also be applied to various other bilayers. Moreover, the PdNSs of a few nanometers in thickness and several hundred nanometers in width show higher catalytic activity for the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol than the previously reported Pd catalysts without any supports

Speech Synthesis Based on Hidden Markov Models

    No full text
This paper gives a general overview of hidden Markov model (HMM)-based speech synthesis, which has recently been demonstrated to be very effective in synthesizing speech. The main advantage of this approach is its flexibility in changing speaker identities, emotions, and speaking styles. This paper also discusses the relation between the HMM-based approach and the more conventional unit-selection approach that has dominated over the last decades. Finally, advanced techniques for future developments are described
