The Poetry of Ping-Pong
In this chapter, the author looks at the poetry of Ping-Pong, his favorite sport. According to Marty Reisman, the game of Ping-Pong died in Bombay, India, in 1952. Reisman, nicknamed “The Needle,” was favored to win the World Table Tennis Championship that day. The author says he has always loved Ping-Pong because you can get into a rhythm, hit the ball back and forth across the net for hours, with any racquet, and simply talk. Ping-Pong, like poetry, is a players' sport, not ideal for spectators. Bob Mankoff, the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, claims that there is palpable humor in the game. With Ping-Pong, the author insists that we are all capable of attuning ourselves to the hidden life of sports, a relationship that is about kinesthesia and embodiment.</p

Ping-Pong-Pang Instrumentation Amplifier
This thesis describes the implementation of a Precision Instrumentation Amplifier using a Current Feedback Instrumentation Amplifier topology (CFIA). CFIAs are attractive for sensor readout, because of their high CMRR and their ability to interface with ground-referenced sensors. Several chopping and auto-zeroing techniques have been developed to reduce the offset and 1/f noise of such amplifiers to the ?V level. As a result, their dominant source of error is now gain error, which is limited by mismatch to at best 0.1%. This paper describes a CFIA that applies dynamic element matching (DEM) to achieve a gain error of less than 0.04%. Moreover, it presents the first silicon implementation of the ping-pong-pang (PPP) auto-zeroing scheme, which enables a 3.5× reduction in power consumption and 2.5× improvement in gain error as compared to state-of-the-art ping-pong auto-zeroed CFIAs.Electronic InstrumentationMicroelectronics & Computer EngineeringElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

The second marketing model addresses interpretation issues of traditional multiple dimensional scaling (MDS) model, and has three key features. First, it can provide an explicit meaning to each dimension. Second, it can directly provide a link between brand positions and brand attributes, so that marketing mix can be designed to optimize share or profit. Third, for a case of n brands and m product attributes, we only need to estimate m nonzero parameters to represent all brand positions in the reduced space of d dimensions where d < m. The model is applied to a real data set of thirty four cars and nine attributes. Empirical findings suggest that the proposed model is a viable alternative to existing methods. This thesis proposes two marketing models. The first model is a multiple criteria ranking (MCR) model. It proposes a consensus approach to solve multiple criteria ranking problems. Marketing decisions frequently involve ranking various subjects using multiple criteria. However, it is difficult to have acceptance from all subjects. The proposed multiple criteria ranking model allows each subject to have a "say" in the evaluation process. All subjects together resolve their conflicts through voting so that consensus ranking can be derived under the majority rule principle. The new ranking procedure can be formulated as a series of mathematical programming models, and illustrated with two cases. First, ranking the research performance of thirty one marketing scholars according to their publications in four leading marketing journals. Second, ranking the performance of one hundred information technology companies.Lam Pong Yuen."June 2000."Added t.p. in Chinese.Director: Lau Kin Nam.Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 61-08, Section: A, page: 3259.Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2000.Electronic reproduction. Computation of 2D Discrete Geometric Moments Through Inclusion-Exclusion
We propose a new formula for computing discrete geometric moments on 2D binary images. The new formula is based on the inclusion-exclusion principle, and is especially tailored for images coming from computer art, characterized by a prevalence of horizontal and vertical lines. On the target class of images, our formula reduces the number of pixels where calculations are to be performed
