Comparing Non-native and Translated Language: Monolingual Comparable Corpora with a Twist

    No full text
This paper illustrates a novel methodology for corpus-based investigations, which is being used in an ongoing research project looking into the salient features of two interfacing forms of mediated discourse, namely non-native and translated language. This work focuses on the language pair English-Italian within the framework of translation universals, and the novelty of our approach lies in the adoption of a monolingual comparable perspective which diverges from research paradigms traditionally used in corpus-based translation studies. These typically rely on corpora consisting of texts produced by native speakers on the one hand, and translations into the same language from a range of source languages on the other (cf. Baker, 1995:234). Our method differs from classic approaches in two main ways: (1) non-native written data are added to the equation (cf. Chesterman, 2007:63); and (2) the focus is restricted to a specific language pair, which is analysed in both directions. Our corpus thus includes four core components: translations from Italian into English done by native speakers of English (TR-ENG); texts written directly in English by native speakers of Italian (NN-ENG); translations from English into Italian done by native speakers of Italian (TR-ITA); and, finally, texts written directly in Italian by native speakers of English (NN-ITA). In addition, reference corpora are used as benchmarks for comparison with the non-mediated native norm. The paper describes the advantages offered by this composite structure and discusses corpus design, construction and annotation, focusing on comparability issues specific to the English vs. Italian monolingual sub-components. Preliminary results yielded by our analyses seem to indicate that some of the features observed in translated language, and usually explained in terms of translation universals, are in fact also present in non-native production. We therefore suggest that an extended notion of mediation universals might better capture the actual import of these shared phenomena

The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei

    No full text
This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

Comparable Web corpora for bilingual lexicography: a pilot study of English/French collocation extraction and translation

This paper describes two very large (> 1 billion words) Web-derived “reference” corpora of English and French, called ukWaC and frWaC, and reports on a pilot study in which these resources are applied to a bilingual lexicography task focusing on collocation extraction and translation. The two corpora were assembled through automated procedures, and little is known of their actual contents. The study aimed therefore at providing mainly qualitative evaluation of the corpora by applying them to a practical task, i.e. ascertaining whether resources built automatically from the Web can be profitably applied to lexicographic work, on a par with more costly and carefully-built resources such as the British National Corpus (for English). The lexicographic task itself was set up simulating part of the revision of an English-French bilingual dictionary. Focusing unidirectionally on English=>French, it first of all compared the coverage of ukWaC vs. the widely used BNC in terms of collocational information of a sample of English SL nodewords. The evidence thus assembled was submitted to a professional lexicographer who evaluated relevance. The validated collocational complexes selected for inclusion in the revised version were then translated into French drawing evidence from frWaC, and the translations were validated by a professional translator (native speaker of French). The results suggest that the two Web corpora provide relevant and comparable linguistic evidence for lexicographic purposes

High Corruption Income in Ming and Qing China

    No full text
We develop an economic model that explains historical data on government corruption in Ming and Qing China. In our model, officials extensive powers result in corrupt income matching lands share in output. We estimate corrupt income to be between 14 to 22 times official income resulting in about 22% of agricultural output accruing to 0.4% of the population. The results suggest that eliminating corruption through salary reform was possible in early Ming but impossible by mid-Qing rule. Land reform may also be ineffective because officials could extract the same rents regardless of ownership. High officials incomes and the resulting inequality may have also created distortions and barriers to change that could have contributed to Chinas stagnation over the five centuries 1400-1900s.Corruption, China

Qing hua jian "Fu Yue zhi ming" de wen xian xue yan jiu =: A philological study on the literature of Tsinghua bamboo scripts named Fu Yue zhi ming (Charge to Yue)

M.Phil.In 2008, Tsinghua University obtained a bunch of excavated bamboo manuscripts in the Warring States period which given by the university’s alumni. The contents include some rare chapters of the Book of Documents (also known as the Shangshu《尚書》), among which there are three chapters with the topic name of the “Charge to Yue” (also known as Yue Ming〈說命〉). The name was written on the back of bamboo slip. This essay investigates the philological questions based on the excavated version of the “Charge to Yue”.There are three Chapters of “Charge to Yue” in the Book of Documents. The Shangshu’s preface says, “Emperor Gaozong dreamed about obtaining Fu Yue (傅說) and then he asked ministers to find him. Fu Yue was found at a place called Fu Yan (傅巖). Three chapters of ‘Charge to Yue’were recorded.” It is said that this “old-text” version is provided by Mei Ze (梅賾) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Since the Qing Dynasty, scholars have widely argued that it is a work of fabrication, in spite of that, there are some scholars believing that it is a true copy. Comparing the received text with the excavated text, only a small part of the received text that were quoted by other Pre-Qin Classics can correspond to the excavated bamboo manuscripts. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part introduces scholars’ opinions about these chapters, and then summarizes and brings forward the writer’s point of view. The other part talks over the received “Charge to Yue”. Through juxtaposing and comparing the excavated texts, the received “Charge to Yue” and the quotations of the received “Charge to Yue” taken from other books, this article has found the relationships among the excavated texts and the two kinds of received texts, and figured out the differences of content, framework and diction. Furthermore, this essay has explored the sources of the “Charge to Yue” of the received text of the Book of Documents. Parallel title from English abstract.Thesis M.Phil. China's New Social Security System in Making: Problems and Prospects

    No full text
China’s welfare regime has been historically characterized by its structural arrangement, distinguishing itself from that of many other countries. The major difference lies in the efforts made by the Chinese government to build up a social safety-net to be compatible not merely with societal needs but more critically with its unique political structure to ensure its legitimacy and stability are unchallenged. We argue that while ensuring political stability continues to remain as a policy priority, China’s current welfare restructuring is being confronted by freed-up market forces that make it more difficult to acheive a delicate balance between where the needs are and how resources are allocated
