This report summarises some preliminary results. Nonstationary extreme value statistics of cold temperatures in Kiev has been evaluated, with some index of the NAO as a covariate responsible for nonstationary conditions. We found that while mean DJF temperatures depend more on negative values of an NAO index, some extremal features depend more on its positive values. The author introduces both fundamental concepts of transition states and pathways and advanced computational techniques, focusing on Gentlest Ascent Dynamics (GAD) and its variants. In particular, she explores enhanced numerical methods such as the convex splitting method and the Scalar Auxiliary Variable (SAV) approach within the Iterative Minimization Formulation (IMF).     Enhancing clustering blog documents by utilizing author/reader comments

    Blogs are a new form of internet phenomenon and a vast ever-increasing information resource. Mining blog files for information is a very new research direction in data mining. Blog files are different from standard web files and may need specialized mining strategies. We propose to include the title, body, and comments of the blog pages in clustering datasets from blog documents. In particular, we argue that the author/reader comments of the blog pages may have more discriminating effect in clustering blog documents. We constructed a word-page matrix by downloading blog pages from a well-known website and experimented a k-means clustering algorithm with different weights assigned to the title, body, and comment parts. Our experimental results show that assigning a larger weight value to the blog comments helps the k-means algorithm produce better clustering solutions. The experimental results confirm our hypothesis that the author/reader comments of the blog files are very useful in discriminating blog files

    How Do Monetary Incentives Affect Online Product Reviews and Sales?

    Online retailers employ various strategies to encourage consumers to write online product reviews. Monetary incentives---a widely used extrinsic motivation in the business world---are not commonly used by online retailers to encourage consumers to write online product reviews. One plausible explanation is because of the cost of monetary incentives, albeit the trade-off between the cost of monetary incentives versus the benefit of having more online product reviews has not been examined. With a unique panel data set from a major Chinese online retailer that has been offering monetary incentives to encourage consumers to write product reviews, we examine how monetary incentives affect online product reviews and sales. Interestingly, we find that small rewards---less than 1.5 yuan for each product review, can increase product sales significantly. Our findings suggest that paying for product reviews can be an effective strategy for online retailers to increase sales

    Dynamic characteristics of droplets impacting an inclined wall based on a front-tracking method

    In the current study, the dynamic characteristics of droplets impacting a hydrophilic/hydrophobic inclined wall are investigated using the front-tracking method. The morphological and kinematic features of the droplets are examined across various contact angles ( theta), low Weber numbers ( We <= 10), and inclination angles ( alpha). A sequence of events, including deposition, spreading, contraction, rebound, and subsequent re-spreading, is observed when a droplet impacts a hydrophobic wall, according to the results. The droplet exhibits both a small dimensionless spreading area ( A *) and significant fluctuation, along with a noticeable slip on the wall. As W e increases, the spread and rebound effects become more pronounced, and the slipping velocity also increases. As alpha increases, the slipping velocity becomes greater, and both A * and the dimensionless tangential spreading diameter ( beta) decrease. When a droplet impacts a hydrophilic wall, continuous deposition, spreading, and a subtle slip with inconspicuous rebound are observed. As W e increases, A * expands at an accelerating rate. Furthermore, the wetting effect of hydrophilic surfaces on droplets cannot be overlooked. Consequently, it also shows that as alpha increases, there is a larger diffusion range along the wall with a longer diffusion film and a larger beta. Such behaviors stand in contrast to a droplet impacting a hydrophobic wall
