The Image of Monks in Yuan Dramas: The Case of “Renzi Ji” and “Dongpo Meng”
Get PDFIn this paper, I first analyzed the artistic and literary characteristics of Yuan Dramas in detail, and clarified that the character descriptions drawn in the works were the images that the authors and the general public expected. On top of that, by focusing on the depictions of monks in two of the works that would have been popular at the time, “Renzi Ji” and “Dongpo Meng”, and analyzing their behavior, I clarified a part of the ideal image. As a result, it turned out that the statue of Budai in the drama “Renzi Ji” and the statue of Foyin in the drama “Dongpo Meng” reflected the image of a monk that many people wanted at the time.Whether positively or critically, it should be considered that the images of the characters in existing works of Yuan Dramas reflect the image of the people of the time. The words and actions of Budai in the drama “Renzi Ji” and the words and deeds of Foyin in the drama “Dongpo Meng”, which are depicted positively, can be said to be the ideal monk's words and deeds for the people of the time.
