Yin Yu Tang and the effects of re-contextualization on vernacular architecture
honors thesisCollege of Fine ArtsArt & Art HistoryWinston C. KyanMy paper on the cultural and architectural re-contextualization of Yin Yu Tang, or Hall of Abundant Shelter, at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, MA, has two main goals: 1) to consider the connections between architecture, space, and the family in a traditional Chinese house; and 2) to examine how these connections are re-installed, represented, and re-interpreted as this building is moved from its original location in Anhui Province, China, to an American museum in New England. Although the PEM includes more than twenty pre-Civil War buildings, Yin Yu Tang is a component of the museum\u27s collection that stands out from the rest of the architecture due to its exceptional construction, preservation, and cultural foreignness. Along with the architecture itself, Yin Yu Tang has transported its two hundred year-old history and culture of the Huang family and Anhui Province to the museum. By being moved to a new context, Yin Yu Tang\u27s already historical identity becomes even more intricately layered than before and presents questions about the interpretation of historic environments. How has Yin Yu Tang renewed public memory of Chinese culture and transformed the house into a form of refined vernacular architecture for Western visitors? Building upon my participation at the Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (Oct. 9-10, 2015), my research also examines the notion of "authenticity" in the process of re-contextualization. Authenticity is a consistently contested and changing idea in cultural representation that is closely connected to the history of presenting foreign cultures outside of its original context. By comparing Yin Yu Tang\u27s approach to authenticity to that of museum "period rooms," my paper presents Yin Yu Tang as a unique, immersive microcosm from the past that appreciates the value of preservation and respect for culture

A Critical Analysis of the Yin Yu Tang Project and the Preservation of Huizhou-Style Vernacular Dwellings in China
Yin Yu Tang is the only example of re-erecting a major proportion of a traditional Chinese building outside China. The popularity of mounting such an exhibition abroad and its uniqueness make the Project a well-discussed topic in China. Also, the relocation of Yin Yu Tang in the U.S. provides a new way for the Chinese public to look at vernacular dwellings. However, as interesting as it is, there is no official introduction of the Project in China, and the public could only learn about it from other sources.
The perspectives of these articles have alternated with changes in preservation awareness and the social contexts within China, which has in turn led to misinterpretations and rumors about the Project and the preservation field, eventually affecting the Chinese public's understandings of preservation and its actions. This research examines a critical analysis of the context and influence of the Yin Yu Tang project from social, political and cultural perspectives. Meanwhile, the paper means to re-organize the development of historic vernacular dwellings' preservation in China and to locate the position and role of the Yin Yu Tang project in the entire process.
The societal changes in China impact the public understanding of a preservation project. From there, it is possible to cast a light on how preservation practices are beyond the national boundary and reveal the importance for preservationists to take back the dominant voice of promoting their projects and the public's education

Yu Tang Chun 玉堂春
In the artist\u27s own claims on her work: In 1994, I made a sound installation \u27Yu Tang Chun\u27. It consisted of more than one hundred drying racks. On each of the racks, clothes were not placed but instead was rice paper. There were more than 600 speakers hidden between the rice paper. The output sounds from the speakers were a digitally processed excerpt from The Peking Opera \u27Yu Tang Chun\u27. The installation, according to Qin, forms a poetic connection between the East and the West, by an acute juxtaposition of their cultural emblems respectively -- rice paper vs. speaker, soundtracks from Yu Tang Chun vs. the soundtracks\u27 electronic reproductions.
