Exposure:The Integrated Spectacle of the Shanghai Public Transport System

No full text
Written in response to a series of photos of moving image screens on the Shanghai public transport system by Yu Wenhao, this essay considers the environment of public transport in Shanghai as an example of the drive towards what Guy Debord has called the “integrated spectacle” of late capitalism, where we no longer gaze at the spectacle but live in it (and it lives in us). However, it argues that the distracted and fragmented engagement that is inherent to this mode of spectacle also ensures that it is not hermetic, even if, ironically, spectators turn to personal screen devices in their efforts to look away

A Jurassic avialan dinosaur from China resolves the early phylogenetic history of birds

No full text
The recent discovery of small paravian theropod dinosaurs with well-preserved feathers in the Middle–Late Jurassic Tiaojishan Formation of Liaoning Province (northeastern China) has challenged the pivotal position of Archaeopteryx regarded from its discovery to be the most basal bird. Removing Archaeopteryx from the base of Avialae to nest within Deinonychosauria implies that typical bird flight, powered by the forelimbs only, either evolved at least twice, or was subsequently lost or modified in some deinonychosaurians. Here we describe the complete skeleton of a new paravian from the Tiaojishan Formation of Liaoning Province, China. Including this new taxon in a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for basal Paraves does the following: (1) it recovers it as the basal-most avialan; (2) it confirms the avialan status of Archaeopteryx; (3) it places Troodontidae as the sister-group to Avialae; (4) it supports a single origin of powered flight within Paraves; and (5) it implies that the early diversification of Paraves and Avialae took place in the Middle–Late Jurassic period

Integrated tunable mode filter for a mode-division multiplexing system

No full text
Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) using multiple spatial modes as independent signals has been a promising technique to increase the communication capacity in conjunction with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). In MDM systems, mode filters are key components to filter out the undesired signals on specific mode. Analogous to a wavelength tunable filter used in a WDM system, here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a fundamental- or high-order-mode-pass tunable filter for a flexible MDM optical network based on a silicon platform. It consists of two switchable mode exchangers (MEs) and a fundamental-mode pass filter. By controlling the working state of the MEs, dynamic filtering and a tunable output can be achieved. This tunable mode filter exhibits a high extinction ratio of 18 dB and low insertion loss of 3 dB over the C-band. For further demonstration, the proposed device is tested using a modulated signal at 20 Gb/s. The eye diagrams and the bit error rates indicate a good filtering performance.</p

De-multiplexing free on-chip low-loss multimode switch enabling reconfigurable inter-mode and inter-path routing

Switching and routing are critical functionalities for a reconfigurable bandwidth-dense optical network, and great efforts had been made to accommodate mode-division multiplexing technology. Although the reconfigurable routing for spatial-mode groups between different optical paths was realized recently, a demultiplexing-switching-multiplexing process is necessary. Here we present a simplified and compact on-chip 2×2 multimode switch that can be easily upgradable to a larger scale. Fully and reconfigurable routing between not only optical paths but also spatial modes is achieved. To obtain a low loss multimode processing, a novel structure free from demultiplexing and re-multiplexing operations is adopted. The switch enables minimum and maximum insertion losses of 0.3 and 1.2 dB, with a compact footprint of 433 μm×433 μm and low crosstalk of <-16.6 dB for all channels. It is further extended to two types of 4×4 switch fabrics with cross-bar and ring-bus architectures, as demonstrations of high-level integration. System characterization with 32 Gb/s high-speed modulated signals is also carried out, reaching up to 256 Gb/s aggregate throughput. These results verify a general solution of 2×2 multimode switch for reconfigurable inter-mode and inter-path routing applicable in large-scale and high-density multimode optical network.</p

1.88 µm laser emission from Tm3+ doped fluorosilicate glass microspheres with excellent stability and high damage threshold

In this letter, high Q factor microsphere resonators with excellent stability and high damage threshold are fabricated from Tm3+ doped fluorosilicate glasses using the traditional melt-quenching and fiber heating techniques. Intense 1.88 µm photoluminescence and single mode laser emission are obtained under the excitation of an 808 nm laser. The Q factor of the microsphere resonator is measured to be as high as 1.4 × 106. Models for photoluminescence and lasing are proposed using spectroscopic data from the absorption and emission spectra. The excellent resistance to humidity and temperature are characterized from the transmittance spectra under different environmental conditions. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), measured in four different glass samples proves the high damage threshold. The proposed glass microsphere resonator laser can find application in optical sensors and micro lasers, especially in complex environments
