Multifunctional Antioxidants with High Activity at Elevated Temperatures Based on Intramolecular Synergism
Multifunctional antioxidants with three active fragments were prepared through a simple two-step synthesis process. These novel compounds exhibited higher efficiency when inhibiting the oxidation of hydrocarbons compared to commercial products at 180 degrees C. The rational framework gives rise to the unique intramolecular synergism between arylamine moiety and sulfide moiety that can scavenge radicals and decompose peroxides simultaneously

Uhlalutyo bunzululwazi ngokomxholo ochongiweyo kwingqokelela yesihobe sikaWelile Shasha ethi Umsila Wembulu: A thematic critique of a selected poem in Welile Shasha’s poetry collection Umsila Wembulu
Olu phando lusebenzisa uphando ntyilazwi, lujolise ekugrombonceni isihobe sikaWelile Shasha kwingqokelela yakhe ethi Umsila Wembulu. Apha kweli phepha, eyona nkalo umphandi ajonge kuyo kukuchonga umbongo omnye ogxile kumxholo ongempilo, ze loo mxholo usetyenziswe ukusunduza nokugqwesisa iingxoxo bunzululwazi kuncwadi lwesiXhosa ezingena ncakasana nakwixesha langoku lentsholongwane yeCOVID-19. Isizathu esityhilizele eli phepha ekuchongeni umbongo omnye kukuminxiselwa kweentsingiselo kuwo ngendlela ethi yenze umbongo lo ube namandla xa lowo ethe wawupeculula. Lo mxholo uShasha abonga ngawo yinxalenye yemixholo ephambili kule mbalo yakhe. Into enyuswa lolu phando ngumba othi, uncwadi lwesiXhosa alubhityanga nakancinane ukubalungangasetyenziswa ukuphalisa iingcingambono zentlalo, zempilo, zorhwebo, ukubalula nje ezimbalwa. Asikuko nokuba uncwadi lwesiXhosa olu luthelekiswa noncwadi lwasezizweni. Ekugqibeleni, umphandi unethemba lokuba iintsingiselo eziqhushekwe zade zancathama kulo mbongo kaShasha, ngokomxholo ochongiweyo, ziza kubhentsa ngokuphandle de ziqweqwedisele abanye abaphandi ekuthini babeke umnwe kuzo zonke iinkalo zentlalo kususelwa kwisiXhosa. Kulo msebenzi umphandi ulandela indlela ehlalutyayo, ephendlayo nephicothayo. Ukuqameza nokunqumlezisa iingxaki ezikhoyo ngalo mbandela, uphengululo loncwadi luya kusetyenziswa njengodondolo lokucacisa ubunto ngobunto bayo; ingxaki kunye nomsantsa okhoyo kwisiXhosa nakwimiba yesifo sesifuba. Abathandi, abafundi nootitshala besiXhosa baya kuba nethuba lokwazi ngezinye zeendlela ezikumgangatho ophezulu zokuhlalutya isihobe sesiXhosa, kodwa ke umfundi weli phepha angalindeli kufundiswa ngeendlelazokuhlalutya isihobe.
This research, utilising a qualitative research methodology, seeks to unpack the poetry of Welile Shasha in Umsila Wembulu. The researcher’s primary focus is to unlock the multiplicity of interplaying meanings in one selected poem that addresses health-related issues such as tuberculosis, which could also be more relevant in the COVID-19 era. The motivation for selecting one poem is, through the discussions, supported by the density and multiple ++meanings that are present in the poem. Shasha’s collection of poems, among other themes, contains the main heme of health-related illnesses, and these illnesses are part of our society. To date, very few scholars of isiXhosa have selected literary works under the theme of health, suggesting the need to bridge the gap in isiXhosa literature, specially Shasha’s work. What becomes interesting in Shasha’s literary work is the powerful use of language and literary devices in addressing problems that relate to tuberculosis, thereby opening up discussion for further scrutiny. Attention is drawn to the writer’s creativity in stylistically penning health-related problems, especially in indigenous communities where the health care system is poor. Shasha does this by using the poem ‘Isifo sesifuba’ (tuberculosis). Ultimately, it is hoped that researchers of isiXhosa language and literature will be afforded an opportunity to understand new techniques of analysing poetry and get an opportunity to understand TB as the author teaches us.
Structure, thermal stability, antioxidant activity and DFT studies of trisphenols and related phenols
Two kinds of trisphenols have been successfully synthesized and their structures were confirmed by IR spectra, (HNMR)-H-1, (CNMR)-C-13, mass spectra and X-ray diffraction. They exhibited better thermal stability than both monophenol and bisphenols due to their higher molecular weight. Moreover, their antioxidant activities have been investigated in lubricant oil using PDSC and RBOT. The results showed that the otrisphenol 3b exhibited the best antioxidant activity while the p-trisphenol 3a was the worst. In addition, their relationship between structures and properties has been further explored by a series of DFT calculations including the BDE values, the IP values and the Gibbs free energy barriers for the reaction between phenols and methylperoxyl radicals. A Balance of Power: Exploring the Opportunities and Challenges of AI for a Nation
Artificial intelligence is having a profound impact on the development of human society. It is improving—in some case, re-inventing—our economic, political, cultural, educational and medical sectors, to name a few. For many it is a cost effective solution that makes processes more effective, more intelligent and often more independent. However, in doing this, it is also having a deterministic influence on the dynamics of our societies. From an economic perspective, AI technology could be a game-changer, giving emerging markets the opportunity to outpace more developed markets. In fact, it has the ability to change the balance of global power, so much so that many countries are now striving for a national strategy on AI. And this goes to the very heart of a nation’s security where AI can also create significant implications for the protection and defence of it’s citizens, and economy. This chapter presents how Artificial Intelligence technology is extremely important in how it can shape the strength and power of a nation. Moreover, it highlights how AI can both positively and negatively impact a nation’s security. In summary, the chapter will provide a detailed overview of AI, it will analyse the direct and indirect effects of AI on national security and will present some potential solutions. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG
Molecularly imprinted nanoparticles based potentiometric sensor with a nanomolar detection limit.pdf
Lysozymes are key proteins that play important roles in innate immune defense in many animal phyla by breaking down the bacterial cell-walls. In this study, we report the molecular cloning, sequence analysis and phylogeny of the first caudate amphibian g-lysozyme: a full-length spleen cDNA library from axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). A goose-type (g-lysozyme) EST was identified and the full-length cDNA was obtained using RACE-PCR. The axolotl g-lysozyme sequence represents an open reading frame for a putative signal peptide and the mature protein composed of 184 amino acids. The calculated molecular mass and the theoretical isoelectric point (pI) of this mature protein are 21523.0 Da and 4.37, respectively. Expression of g-lysozyme mRNA is predominantly found in skin, with lower levels in spleen, liver, muscle, and lung. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that caudate amphibian g-lysozyme had distinct evolution pattern for being juxtaposed with not only anura amphibian, but also with the fish, bird and mammal. Although the first complete cDNA sequence for caudate amphibian g-lysozyme is reported in the present study, clones encoding axolotl's other functional immune molecules in the full-length cDNA library will have to be further sequenced to gain insight into the fundamental aspects of antibacterial mechanisms in caudate.Lysozymes are key proteins that play important roles in innate immune defense in many animal phyla by breaking down the bacterial cell-walls.
