A characteristic study of performance bugs in application-database interactions
Environmental interactions (e.g., file I/O, network communication, database querying) are common bottlenecks of software applications. These interactions are also prone to performance bugs because developers may not understand the performance implication of the information sent to or from the environment (e.g., a database query sent to a database or a result set returned from the database). As a result, the performance bugs can further magnify the bottlenecks. Understanding the characteristics of these performance bugs is crucial for developers and testers to better address performance problems. Such understanding also provides guidance for researchers and tool vendors to develop effective tool support. However, there has been no study for understanding such characteristics in real-world software.
To fill this gap, in this thesis, we present the first empirical study of bug reports for database-related performance bugs collected from popular real- world open-source projects (i.e., BugZilla, DNN, Joomla!, MediaWiki, Word- Press, Simple Machines, and Roundcube). We study common optimization opportunities, types of database-related performance bugs, and difficulties of fixing these bugs. Among the studied bug reports, we identify nine common bug types and seven common fix strategies. We also observe that bugs of certain types require more effort to diagnose and fix. Survival and growth of Listeria monocytogenes on romaine lettuce as influenced by crisping and misting
Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen of particular concern for manufacturers of refrigerated fresh produce because of its wide distribution in the environment and its ability to grow at refrigeration temperature. Approximately, two-thirds of supermarkets implement crisping and misting to enhance product appearance and quality. Based on the FDA food code, water used for soaking, submersion, hydrating, or crisping does not need to contain chemical sanitizers. When product is submerged in water, cross-contamination may occur. Therefore, the impact of crisping in water with and without sanitizer was investigated. The study was coupled with determining the influence of misting on growth and survival of L. monocytogenes. Romaine lettuce was inoculated with L. monocytogenes cocktail to achieve initial population of ca. 5.5 log CFU/g, heads were submerged in tap water or tap water containing electrolyzed water for 5 min and then held at 5 oC for 2 h to crisp. Half of the crisped lettuce heads were placed in a refrigerated commercial display cabinet and misted for 24 h. Lettuce was then transferred to a refrigerator (5 oC and 15 oC) and held for 7 days. The population of L. monocytogenes and psychrotrophic bacteria was determined at day 0, 1, 4, and 7 for each treatment and temperature. The results showed that crisping in electrolyzed water significantly reduced (P<0.05) the population of L. monocytogenes by 2.93 log compared to tap water alone (1.32 log reduction). An additional 1 log reduction in population of L. monocytogenes occurred after 24 h misting. The population of L. monocytogenes remained relatively constant during 7 days of refrigerated storage. There was no significant difference in population of L. monocytogenes on lettuce held at 5oC or 15oC. Crisping and misting treatments reduced the population of psychrotrophic bacteria on lettuce. The psychrotrophic bacteria population was greater on lettuce held at 15oC, reaching 6.99-7.54 log CFU/g after 7 days. Results of the present study suggest that crisping treatment, especially with electrolyzed water sanitizer significantly reduced the population of L. monocytogenes on romaine lettuce. Misting also had a negative effect on the survival and growth of L. monocytogenes. Based on the methods used in the present study, the practice of crisping with a commercial sanitizer and misting may enhance the microbial safety of commodities sold at retail supermarkets.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Mengqi Gu
Negative photoconductivity of InAs nanowire
Negative photoconductivity is observed in InAs nanowires (NWs) without a surface defective layer. The negative photoconductivity is strongly dependent on the wavelength and intensity of the light, and is also sensitive to the environmental atmosphere. Two kinds of mechanisms are discerned to work together. One is related to gas adsorption, which is photodesorption of water molecules and photo-assisted chemisorption of O-2 molecules. Bio-wastes energy utilization: thermal characteristics and kinetics of co-combustion of eucommia leaf residues and coal
Utilization of the energy of a large amount of bio-wastes is of great significance for environment protection and energy supply. This study investigated the co-combustion behavior and kinetics of traditional Chinese medicine eucommia leaf residue and Shixiajiang coal. Experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer at three different heating rates, namely, 10, 20, and 30°C/min. The experimental results showed that the combustion of the blends composed of eucommia leaf residue and Shixiajiang coal could be divided into three stages. With increase of eucommia leaf residue in blends, the ignition performance is improved first and then tends to be stable, while the combustion parameters, including the ignition index, stationary combustion performance index, ignitability property index, and comprehensive combustion index, first stay the same and then increase. The combustion kinetics of the blends was determined using the Coats-Redfern, Friedman, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The results showed that, at the stage of volatile combustion, the change trend of activation energy of the blends is serrated, while at the stage of char combustion, the activation energy of the blends is lower than that of the Shixiajiang coal and decreases with increase of eucommia leaf residue's ratio until 80%. The synergistic effects between the eucommia leaf residue and Shixiajiang coal were analyzed and found that the Shixiajiang coal has a restricting effect on volatilization of the eucommia leaf residue, and the eucommia leaf residue has a promotion effect for combustion of the carbon residues from Shixiajiang coal.Peer reviewe
