Man with a hat reads Yu Novosti

    No full text
An older man in suit and hat reads a magazine ("Yu Novosti"). He has three pens in his coat pocket. The cover page of the magazine shows a large portrait of a woman. Other people stand behind the man and talk in front of one of the entrances to Vienna´s South Station

A systemic approach to translating style: a comparative study of four Chinese translations of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea

    No full text
The visibility of translators in translated texts has been increasingly recognised, yet research on the translator’s voice and the methodological issues concerned has remained sparse. Corpus-based methods allow only limited access to the motivation of the translator’s choices, and need to be complemented by other research tools to form a coherent methodology for investigating a translator’s style. The thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining systemic linguistics and corpus studies with sociohistorical research within a descriptive framework to study the translator’s discursive presence in the text. This approach is as yet underexplored in translation studies. My work examines four Chinese translations of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea (1952), by Hai Guan (1956), Wu Lao (1987), Li Xiyin (1987) and Zhao Shaowei (1987). The investigation concerns the rendering of transitivity, modality, direct speech and free direct thought presentation as well as the transitions of modes of point of view. It also inquires into the causes of the variation in style between the four translators. I map textual features onto specific sociocultural and ideological contexts of production in an attempt to identify correlations between them. Another objective is to test the applicability of Halliday’s transitivity model (1994) and Simpson’s model of point of view (1993) to the analysis of Chinese translated texts, and to explore possible adjustments to these models to make them serviceable for translation comparison between English and Chinese. The thesis has six chapters: (1) Theoretical approaches, methodological tools and framework, (2) Location of the texts within the sociocultural contexts, (3) Translation of the transitivity system, (4) Translation of point of view, (5) Critical analysis of individual examples and (6) Motivations for translation shifts

Development of copper nanocomposite coatings for all-optical ultrasound bioimaging

This thesis details the development of air-stable and photostable copper nanoparticles and, subsequently, elastomeric nanocomposite coatings by focusing on three key areas: 1. Development of copper nanoparticle synthesis routes in an ambient environment; 2. Developing organic dye nanocomposites with specific optical absorption properties; and 3. Optimizing fabrication conditions of the elastomeric component – Polydimethylsiloxane (Sylgard 184). By varying synthesis parameters, such as capping agent, copper precursors, synthesis temperature and solvent, a range of particle morphologies was synthesised, including nanocubes (15 ~ 500 nm), nanospikes (average 150 nm in length) and sub 10 nm nanoparticles. These colloidal copper nanoparticles demonstrated good stability, with representative studies indicating stability for at least one month when stored in a dark ambient environment. These copper nanoparticles were fabricated into elastomeric composites via doctor-blading. The majority of these nanocomposites were of sub-100 microns in thickness and measured at over 98% absorption. Further work entailed incorporating a range of cationic and anionic organic dyes into polymeric nanocomposites to shift and enhance absorbance at specific wavelengths, including observational studies of the interaction of dyes with gold and copper nanoparticles. Due to their high optical absorption and the ability to be applied onto a wide range of substrates, these nanocomposites are well suited to an emerging biomedical imaging modality, all-optical ultrasound (OpUS), where they undergo rapid localised heating, which causes a pressure rise that propagates as an ultrasound wave upon pulsed laser excitation. The OpUS performance of the copper nanocomposite coatings was characterised using pulsed (ns-scale) laser excitation at 532 nm. Ultrasound peak-to-peak pressures higher than 2 MPa were achieved with a laser fluence of ~50 mJ/cm2, a conversion efficiency that favourably compares to literature values. Moreover, these nanocomposites demonstrated good photostability, with stable ultrasound pressures after 30 minutes of continuous exposure to laser (laser fluence: 36 mJ/cm2)

On the geometric autocorrelation function of polycrystalline materials

    No full text
Herein we derive an expression for direct determination of the geometric autocorrelation function W of a polycrystalline material from images of its grain boundary network (e.g., those delivered by orientation imaging microscopy). We also obtain an identity that relates the mean linear intercept function to a directional derivative of the geometric autocorrelation function. These formulae were applied to examine whether a widely-used formula for W, particularly in theoretical studies of attenuation of elastic waves in polycrystalline media, would be valid for the grain boundary structure of a commercial aluminum alloy. The conclusion was negative

Man selling Yu Novosti to travellers

A man, wearing a coat with a Yu Novosti logo, sells and displays magazines to a woman at a bus station. The woman is looking at the magazine and takes a copy of it with her right hand. "Yu (Novosti)" is legible on the cover. The woman wears a coat and a head scarf, and holds a plastic bag in her left hand. There are many other people and several parked buses nearby. The people stand or walk. Close to the front of the camera several suitcases and cardboard boxes can be seen. The parked buses are filled with passengers

    Man reads Yu Novosti magazine

A man sits on the back of a VW automobile and reads a copy of Yu Novosti. He wears pants and a shirt, and his sleeves are partially rolled up. A Viennese license plate can be seen on his car. Behind him and the car is another parked car, followed by a parked bus. Another bus, with a luggage trailer faces sideways to the three vehicles. A few bags can be seen near the bus’s front right wheel. Part of Vienna`s South Station is visible in the background

A Yield Spread Perspective on the Great Financial Crisis: Break-Point Test Evidence

    No full text
We use a simple partial adjustment econometric framework to investigate the effects of financial crises on the dynamic properties of yield spreads. We find that crises manifest themselves in the form of substantial disruptions revealed by changes in the persistence of the shocks to spreads as much as by in their unconditional mean levels. Formal breakpoint tests confirm that in the U.S. the Great Financial Crisis has been over approximately since the Spring of 2009 and provide a conservative dating centered around the August 2007–June 2009 dates. However, some yield spread series point to an end of the most serious disruptions as early as in December 2008. Some symptoms of an impending crisis re-appear instead in the second half of 2011. We also uncover evidence that the LSAP program implemented by the Fed in the U.S. residential mortgage market has been effective, in the sense that the risk premia in this market have been uniquely shielded from the disruptive effects of the crisis
