On a conjecture of Huang--Lian--Yau--Yu

No full text
We verify a formula on the solution rank of the tautological system arising from ample complete intersections in a projective homogeneous space of a semisimple group conjectured by Huang--Lian--Yau--Yu arXiv:1801.01194. As an application, we prove the existence of the rank one point for such a system, where mirror symmetry is expected.Comment: 9 pages. Comments are welcome. Identical topics in Mandarin Chinese and Shanghainese

No full text
Identical topic (IT henceforth) was previously known as copying topic (Xu & Liu (1998:141-157). It is fully or partially identical to a corresponding element (CE henceforth) occurring in the following part of the clause. Broadly speaking, IT is semantically empty. Being an unusual type of adding, it properly falls into the central concern of this volume. It seems IT can be attested in all Chinese dialects, though the phenomena in question have been poorly documented and have scarcely been studied under a unified category. IT seems to be a better candidate to characterise topic prominent languages than many other topic types including the non-gap topic, which has long been called "Chinese style topic" since Chafe (1976) and has been viewed as a major characteristic of topic prominent languages (e.g., Li & Thompson, 1976, Xu & Langendoen 1985, Gasde 1999). I believe the study of IT structure is necessary to obtain a clearer and more complete picture of topic structure in general. As far as I know, Wu dialects of Chinese, including Shanghainese, are the ones which have the richest IT types and the greatest text frequency of IT. Therefore, this study will be based on both Mandarin and Shanghainese data

[[abstract]]The thesis deals with the ‘lian…dou/ye …’ construction in modern Chinese. In order to clarify the informational status of ‘lian…’, issues on topic and focus are shown in the first part of this thesis. Then, discussions on semantic functions and conversational implicatures of this construction constitute the sencond part. Lastly, the formal complexity and pedagogical instructions will be presented as well.

An approach to Cheng-nan Lian-ju of Han Yu and Meng Jiao

The tradition of linked verse in China was revived by the Da-li 大曆 poets and got popular among Mid-Tang 中唐 Literati, of whom two groups were most notable. One was led by Bai Ju-yi 白居易 and Liu Yu-xi 劉禹錫, whose linked verse grew out of their friendship. The other was led by Han Yu and Meng Jiao. They competed each other in their poetic art and experimented with new expressions. In this article I offer a close reading of the first part of their representative work "Cheng-nan Lian-ju". They deal with fresh subject matters, and their description is unique in their determined avoidance of stale poetic diction. This new poetic style directly influenced Li He 李賀, especially in Chang-gu shi 昌谷詩. However, the two pieces are quite different. For example, while "Cheng-nan Lian-ju", though very concrete in its description, is not about any real place, in Chang-gu shi, Li He when evidently writing about the scenery of Chang-gu, his home country, created an imaginary world out of a real place

Effects of Gan Lian Yuping Feng powder on the antibody titers to infectious laryngotracheitis vaccine and some nonspecific immune indexes in chickens

No full text
The study was conducted in order to investigate the immuno-enhancing property of the Chinese herbal formula, Gan lian Yu ping feng powder. Three hundred and thirty six 45-day-old chicks were randomly divided into eight groups. The chicks in groups A, B, C were orally given 0.25 g/mL (low-)C0.5 g/mL (middle-) and 1.0 g/mL (high) dose of Gan lian Yu ping feng powder in the drinking water respectively for 3 days consecutively. They were then immunised with infectious laryngotracheitis vaccine (ILTV) on the 4th day. Groups D, E, F were given 0.25 g/mLC0.5 g/mL and 1.0 g/mL dose of Gan lian Yu ping feng powder respectively after the immunisation for three days consecutively. Group G was Wen du qing (agovernment approved herbal product for ILT) control group, and group H was blank control group. At 52, 59, 73, 87 days of age, 8 chicks of each group were selected randomly for blood sampling to determine the levels of IFN-ƒÁ, IL-4 and the antibody of ILT. Then the chickens were sacrificed, with the thymus, spleen and Bursa of Fabricius being weighed for thecalculation of immune organ indexes. The results showed that high and middle dosages of Gan lian Yu ping feng powder given at the day before immunisation and 3 days after immunisation elevated not only the contents of IFN-ƒÁ, the antibody titers of ILT (P<0.01) and the immune organ indexes (P<0.05) significantly, but also reduced the contents of IL-4. There was a significantly different degree of enhancement in the content of IFN-ƒÁ, the antibody of ILT (P<0.01) and the immune organindex (P<0.05). The results indicate that Gan lian Yu ping feng powder effectively improves the immunity in chickens.Key words: Gan lian Yu ping feng powder; chicken; Infectious Laryngotracheitis vaccine; immune functio
