    Coordination of Multiple Robotic Fish With Applications to Underwater Robot Competition

    This paper is concerned with the coordination control of multiple biomimetic robotic fish in highly dynamic aquatic environments by building a hybrid centralized system. With the aid of the results of biorobotics and control techniques, a radio-controlled multijoint robotic fish and its locomotion control are developed. To enable a closed control loop, a visual subsystem that is responsible for tracking of multiple moving objects is constructed and implemented in real time. Furthermore, a behavior-based hierarchical architecture in conjunction with fuzzy reinforcement learning is proposed to accomplish effective coordination among multiple swimming robots. Finally, experiments on 2vs2 water polo game are carried out to verify the proposed coordination control scheme. Over the past eight years, this multirobot platform has been successfully applied to international underwater robot competitions to promote innovative research and education in underwater robotics

    Beyond anti-hegemonism to security regime : China's perspectives, institutions and engagement in the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty

    This research analyzes China's socialization in the international Arms Control and Disarmament (ACD) field. Constructing the theoretical framework of "dynamic interaction between state and institution" in order to reconcile the "problem of agend and structure" debated in IR, the research identified the formative effects on China during the last two decades in general and in the post-CTBT (Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty) period in particular, which engaged China in the international ACD institutions and regimes. The socialization effects on China are recognized at the three levels: China's norm internalization (perspective), institutionalization (domestic institutions) and comprehensive participation in the international ACD regimes and institutions. The evidence based on documentary works and a few interviews suggests that the engagement in international institutions is promoting a Chinese nexus in these institutions, creating new Chinese interests and socializing China into building consensus to resolving international ACD issues. The evolution and differentiation of Chinese perspectives on ACD issues resulted into the view that stresses China's role and responsibility within the regimes. The "new security concept" based on mutual security and restructuring of domestic ACD institutions in the late 1990s were the products of the socialization that "dynamic interaction" fostered. During the CTBT talks, China showed the norm-complying and establishing attitude. China also committed to the nuclear test ban norm by sustaining the nuclear test moratorium since 1996. The socialization process led China to more comprehensive and constructive participation in the international ACD institutions and regimes as China joined the Zangger Committee and supported the FMCT (Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty) after its accession to the CTBT. As constructivists argue that state can reshape structure by process. China reconstituted its interests and identities throughout the interaction with the international ACD institutions. China's more proactive role within ACD institutions and regimes will give it more constitutive socialization influence, but the role is basically entrenched in "state enhancement functionalism.

    Globalization and media governance in the People's Republic of China (1992-2004)

    The media long regarded as a characteristic element of state propaganda in authoritarian regimes have become a key interest for western academic literature. Yet little attention has been paid to the fact that media within an authoritarian country may be influenced by external factors as well. This work addresses this issue and explores the roles external factors like media globalization and transnational media corporations (TNMCs) play in the transition of China's media governance. It argues that transnational forces have increasingly imposed insurmountable politico-economic pressures on the Chinese media regime, leading the state to further embrace the globalised economy and thus promote market-driven policies. As such, the ongoing task of media governance transition has a far-reaching impact upon socio-political systems in the PRC-a pattern of steady institutionalization with Chinese characteristics of media governance is emerging. The socio-political impact of the steady media institutionalization fosters a more relaxed space in both political and social domains. This has also challenged the dominant approaches, i. e., the 'Value-domination', the Nationalist, the Liberal model, and the Trans-cultural model, in the study of media politics in authoritarian states. After examining the changes in media institutions, policy responses, media structure, and media culture, the author conceptualizes these changes as institutional transformation, de-regulation,d e-monopolization, and de-propagandization. This dissertation concludes that China's media governance has continuously progressed from the model of 'leader-determined' model towards a 'consensus-building' model with an increase in media participants

    Genomic information for bacteria within the genus Rahnella remains limited. Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 was previously isolated from the Pinus massoniana rhizosphere in China and shows potential as a plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacterium. In the present work, we combined the GridION Nanopore ONT and Illumina sequencing platforms to obtain the complete genome sequence of strain JZ-GX1, and the application effects of the strain in natural field environment was assessed. The whole genome of Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 comprised a single circular chromosome (5,472,828 bp, G + C content of 53.53%) with 4,483 protein-coding sequences, 22 rRNAs, and 77 tRNAs. Based on whole genome phylogenetic and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis, the JZ-GX1 strain was reidentified as R. victoriana. Genes related to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, siderophores, acetoin, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production, spermidine and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) biosynthesis were present in the genome of strain JZ-GX1. In addition, these functions were also confirmed by in vitro experiments. Importantly, compared to uninoculated control plants, Pyrus serotina, Malus spectabilis, Populus euramericana (Dode) Guinier cv. “San Martino” (I-72 poplar) and Pinus elliottii plants inoculated with strain JZ-GX1 showed increased heights and ground diameters. These findings improve our understanding of R. victoriana JZ-GX1 as a potential biofertilizer in agriculture.</p

    in experiment, characteristics of silicon microring/racetrack resonators in submicron rib waveguides have been systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that only a transverse-electric mode is guided for a ratio of slab height to rib height h/H = 0.5. Thus, these microring/racetrack resonators can only function for quasi-transverse-electric mode, while they get rid of transverse-magnetic polarization. Electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma etching were employed and improved to reduce side-wall roughness for low propagation loss and high performance resonators. Then, the effects of waveguide dimensions, coupling region design, waveguide roughness, and oxide cladding for the resonators have been considered and analyzed. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.     A study on GaP/Si heterostructures grown by GS-MBE

    GaP/Si is a promoting heterostructure for Si-based optoelectronic devices since lattice constants of GaP and Si are so closed that they can match with each other. GaP was successfully grow on (100) Si subtracts by Gas-Source Molecular Bean Epitaxy (GS-MBE) in the study. The GaP/Si heterostructure was characterized by X-ray double crystal diffraction, Anger electron spectrograph, X-ray photonic spectrograph and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The results showed that the epitaxial GaP layers are single crystalline, in which a parallel to and a (perpendicular to)are 0.54322 and 0.54625 nm, respectively. The peaks in PL spectra of GaP epitaxial layer grown on Si are 650, 627 and 640 nm, respectively. The study demonstrated that GaP/Si is a kind of lattice matched heterostructures and will be a promoting materials for future integrated photonics
