Connecting classroom English to real-world English: Taiwanese teachers and students’ perspectives on ELF-aware pedagogy
There has been considerable research on the global spread of English and its impact on English language use. In particular, there is extensive interest in how the fluid nature of the lingua franca use of English is impacting on real world communication and the consequent pedagogical implications for English language teaching (ELT) and acquisition. However, to date there has been limited research on the ways in which ELT teachers can adapt their teaching strategies to ensure that learners are equipped to use English in the real world. This study involves conducting a critical education inquiry using a Critical Pedagogy informed approach to observe Taiwanese teachers and undergraduate students of English, with the aims being to, firstly, identify the principles being employed by teachers and, secondly, to discover students’ understanding regarding learning English as a lingua franca (ELF) for real-world communication. To these ends, I posit the following research questions:1. What learning/teaching theories and concepts inform Taiwanese teachers of English who teach for real-world communication?2. What are students’ perceptions of learning English for the purposes of the real-world communication within the framework of Taiwanese English language education?I collected data from respondents in three universities and subsequent analysis revealed that the majority of classroom practice was geared towards teaching English as a foreign language rather than as a lingua franca that could be used in real life settings to communicate with a range of English speakers. Specifically, observation of classroom practice and interviews revealed that imitation and repetition strategies are commonly used to reproduce native English-speaking (NES) related linguacultural inputs, whereas critical, interactive, alternative and integrating approaches that are associated with lingua communication, although evident in some cases, were less engaged with. Albeit all of these strategies can serve a purpose in classroom teaching and learning, my evidence suggests that a rebalancing is needed, whereby teachers are more critical and flexible about the resources and approaches they use so as to ensure that these are suitable and context appropriate. In need of theoretical and practical support, teachers still endeavoured to explore ideas and activities for teaching and learning that were feasible in their instructional contexts in order to transcend the NES linguacultural dominance and provide lingua franca insights into classroom practices. Nevertheless, in most cases, students passively accepted the status quo. This highlighted the importance of students taking active roles in developing their own powers to be able to critically evaluate linguacultural resources and achieve balanced views on their own language acquisition and proficiency. This calls for opportunities to be created for students to legitimate their use of resources and skills to learn and use English on their own terms
Kurixalus yangi Yu, Hui, Rao, and Yang 2018
Kurixalus yangi Individuals of Kurixalus yangi (Figure 2 B-C) were collected from forested areas near streams and in open areas with rain fed water bodies adjacent to vegetation cover at Sailam (MZUHC 194, MZUHC 195, MZUHC 196), Hmuifang (MZUHC 199, MZUHC 330), Tamdil (MZUHC 539) and Reiek (MZUHC 1170, MZUHC 1171). In the ML tree (Figure 2D), the sample sequences from Mizoram formed a clade with K. yangi from Yunnan (China), Kachin (Myanmar) and Nagaland (India). The genetic distance between the samples from Mizoram and the topotypic individual (Yunnan, China) is only 0.4% (Supplementary table 4). This represents a second confirmed record of this species from India as well as the westernmost known locality of this species. The genetic distance between the sample of K. yangi from Nagaland, India and other sequences of K. yangi is rather high (3.2–3.9%). However, the authors made a comment that their sequence is of low quality (Humtsoe et al. 2020).Published as part of Lalronunga, Samuel & Lalhmingliani, Esther, 2021, A new country record of Raorchestes cangyuanensis Wu, Suwannapoom, Xu Murphy & Che 2019 and additional record of Kurixalus yangi Yu, Hui, Rao & Yang 2018 (Anura: Rhacophoridae: Rhacophorinae) from India, pp. 383-390 in Zootaxa 4974 (2) on page 385, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4974.2.7, http://zenodo.org/record/477578
두 온도 균질화법에 의한 고온가스로 핵연료요소체의 핵열해석
학위논문(박사) - 한국과학기술원 : 원자력및양자공학과, 2010.2, [ vii, 55 p. ]In either pebble-bed or block type design of high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs), heterogeneous composition and structure leads to difficulty in thermal analysis of the fuel elements (fuel pebbles and fuel compacts, respectively). Thus, a homogenization model becomes essential. Currently, a simple volumetric-average thermal conductivity approach is used. However, this approach lacks basis and is non-conservative in that it underestimates the fuel temperature.
In this thesis, we propose a homogenization model that is not only easy to implement but also gives a more realistic temperature distribution in a fuel pebble or a fuel compact, providing the fuel-kernel and graphite-mixture temperatures separately.
For a given problem, homogenized parameters are obtained at steady-state through matching the analytic solution for the homogenized fuel element to the reference solution of the heterogeneous fuel element. The reference solutions are provided by the Monte Carlo method.
Transient thermal analyses are performed using the homogenization model, in which finite difference method (FDM) in space discretization and explicit scheme in time scale is applied. By providing the power history, temporal changes in temperatures can be computed.
A reactor point kinetics model is then coupled with the two-temperature thermal transient model for more accurate neutronics evaluation with Doppler temperature feedback. Several test scenarios are studied, including external reactivity insertion and coolant cooldown events.한국과학기술원 : 원자력및양자공학과
고온가스로 핵연료요소체내 입자연료들의 미세격자 통계적 모델링
학위논문(석사) - 한국과학기술원 : 원자력및양자공학과, 2005.8, [ vi, 41 p. ]There is growing interest worldwide in high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) as candidates for next generation reactor systems. Either in a pebble type or in a prismatic type HTGR, coated particle fuel (TRISO fuel) appears to be the most promising fuel candidate to be used. For design and analysis of such a reactor, transport models, in particular, stochastic models that permit the simulation of neutron transport through the stochastic mixture of fuel and moderator materials, are becoming essential and gaining importance.
Naturally, the Monte Carlo methods have been used for this situation. However, the methods reported in the literature all have their own deficiencies. In this thesis, we propose a new Monte Carlo method named fine lattice stochastic (FLS) modeling that is distinct from others. This method is based on fine lattice system in which a lattice circumscribes a fuel particle. Once the problem is given, an interface Fortran code gives out the TRISO particle fuel configurations (a set of lattice center points only) for MCNP input. The number of available lattice center points is far larger than the number of fuel particles according to packing fraction of the fuel element. We apply discrete random sampling here to choose a certain number of lattices to fill with fuel particles. In this aspect, FLS modeling allows more realistic fuel particle distributions. In this thesis, only simple cube (SC) structure is used in cubic lattice. However, FLS model can be easily extended to BCC, FCC structures or hexagonal prism type lattice.
The criticality calculations for our FLS modeling were first tested on a small cube problem and compared with other models. The results indicate that the new stochastic model is an accurate and efficient approach to analyze TRISO particle fuel configurations. Then the FLS modeling was performed to analyze HTGR fuel elements for both pebble type and prismatic type and the results were also good as expected.한국과학기술원 : 원자력및양자공학과
