On the predictive capability and stability of rubber material models

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 99-101).Due to the high non-linearity and incompressibility constraint of rubber materials, the predictive capability and stability of rubber material models require specific attention for practical engineering analysis. In this thesis, the predictive capability of various rubber material models, namely the Mooney-Rivlin model, Arruda-Boyce model, Ogden model and the newly proposed Sussman-Bathe model, is investigated theoretically with continuum mechanics methods and tested numerically in various deformation situations using the finite element analysis software ADINA. In addition, a recently made available stability criterion of rubber material models is re-derived and verified through numerical experiments for the above four models with ADINA. Thereafter, the predictive capability and stability of material models are studied jointly for non-homogenous deformations. The Mooney-Rivlin model, Arruda-Boyce model, Ogden model have difficulties in describing the uniaxial compression data while the Sussman-Bathe model can fit both compression and extension data well. Thus, the Sussman-Bathe model has the best predictive capability for pure shear deformations. Furthermore, with respect to more complex non-homogenous deformations, a conclusion is drawn that all three major deformations, namely uniaxial deformation, biaxial deformation and pure shear deformation, must satisfy the stability criterion to obtain physically correct non-homogenous simulation results.by Haining Zheng.S.M

Lysozymes are key proteins that play important roles in innate immune defense in many animal phyla by breaking down the bacterial cell-walls. In this study, we report the molecular cloning, sequence analysis and phylogeny of the first caudate amphibian g-lysozyme: a full-length spleen cDNA library from axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). A goose-type (g-lysozyme) EST was identified and the full-length cDNA was obtained using RACE-PCR. The axolotl g-lysozyme sequence represents an open reading frame for a putative signal peptide and the mature protein composed of 184 amino acids. The calculated molecular mass and the theoretical isoelectric point (pI) of this mature protein are 21523.0 Da and 4.37, respectively. Expression of g-lysozyme mRNA is predominantly found in skin, with lower levels in spleen, liver, muscle, and lung. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that caudate amphibian g-lysozyme had distinct evolution pattern for being juxtaposed with not only anura amphibian, but also with the fish, bird and mammal. An Efficient Architecture For Networking Event-Based Fluorescent Imaging Analysis Processes
Complex user-end procedures for the execution of computationally expensive processes and tools on high performance computing platforms can hinder the scientific progress of researchers across many domains. In addition, such processes occasionally cannot be executed on user-end platforms either due to insufficient hardware resources or unacceptably long computing times. Such circumstances currently extend to highly sophisticated algorithms and tools utilized for analysis of fluorescent imaging data. Although an extensive collection of cloud-computing solutions exist allowing software developers to resolve these issues, such solutions often abstract both developers and integrators from the executing hardware particulars and can inadvertently incentivize non-ideal software design practices. The discussion herein consists of the theoretical design and real-world realization of an efficient architecture to enable direct multi-user parallel remote utilization of such research tools. Said networked scalable real-time architecture is multi-tier, extensible by design to a vast collection of application archetypes, and is not strictly limited to imaging analysis applications. Transport layer interfaces for packetized binary data transmission, asynchronous command issuance mechanisms, compression and decompression algorithm aggregation, and relational database management systems for inter-tier communication intermediation enable a robust, lightweight, and efficient architecture for networking and remotely interfacing with fluorescent imaging analysis processes.M.S.Collaboration amongst researchers within various technical domains who rely on information processing and analysis tools can be strengthened through the deployment of scientific computing infrastructure that enables their usage via a web interface. The architecture of such infrastructure is preferably efficient, lightweight, and simple while retaining potential future integration capabilities with additional research tools. This work presents the theoretical design and realization of an architecture for networking fluorescent imaging analysis processes so as to make them remotely usable within internal computer networks and across the world wide web

Early responses to H7N9 in southern mainland China

article, unless otherwise stated.Background: H7N9 posed potentially serious health challenges for Chinese society. The previous SARS outbreak in this country was accompanied by contradictory information, while worries about wide-spread influenza led to discrimination worldwide. Early understanding of public threat perceptions is therefore important for effective public health communication and intervention. Methods: We interviewed 1011 respondents by phone two weeks after the first case. Questions examined risk awareness and media use, beliefs about the emergence of the threat and those most at risk, anxiety about infection and preventive and avoidant behaviours. Results: Results demonstrate moderate levels of anxiety but relatively high levels of trust towards government officials. Threat emergence was associated with hygiene levels, temperature change, floating pigs in the Huangpu River and migration to the city. Anxiety predicted both recommended and non-recommended behavioural changes. Conclusions: Comparatively high levels of trust in Chinese government advice about H7N9 contrast positively with previous pandemic communications in China. Anxiety helped drive both recommended and non-recommended behaviours, with potentially important economic and social implications. This included evidence of 'othering’ of those associated with the threat (e.g. migrants).
