Blattodea synchrotron x-rays 8 species
No full textThese are tiled x-ray images of eight cockroach species taken at Argonne National Labs. The species are: Blaberus discoidalis, Paratemnopteryx couloniana, Deropeltis paulinoi, Dorylaea orini, Panchlora nivea, Gyna lurida, Elliptorhina chopardi, and Gromphaedorhina portentosa.
All species were taken to Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne, IL, USA) for phase contrast x-ray synchrotron imaging . The animals were euthanized using ethyl acetate prior to placement in the field of the x-ray beam and then placed inside a small Kapton (x-ray transparent) pouch before imaging. Specimens were mounted individually on a translation/rotation stage and imaged with monochromatic x-rays of 25 keV. The x-rays were converted to visible light using a cerium-doped yttrium-garnet scintillator, located 300 mm from the sample. A CCD camera (SensiCam QE, Cooke, Romulus, MI, USA) and 5X microscope objective (Achrovid, Infinity, Boulder, CO) were used to record the images (1280 X 1024 pixels).
Using Adobe ImageReady CS2 a full composite image for each animal was generated by tiling the images, maintaining the same resolution throughout the process. The number of tiles per animal ranged from approximately 100 in the smallest specimens to 3000 in the largest specimens. Each tile has an overlap of 445 pixels with the adjacent tiles on the left and right, and an overlap of 190 pixels with adjacent tiles above and below. The correct overlap was found by manually overlapping and matching easily distinguishable features in Adobe ImageReady CS2 and then measuring tile overlap. Adobe ImageReady CS2 allowed us to arrange the tiles in rows with the correct overlap by inputting "-445" in the "distribute layer horizontal space" function field. Tiles in these rows were then merged. Merged rows were arranged with the correct overlap by inputting "-190" in the "distribute layer vertical space" function field. All rows were then merged forming the full composite image. Full composite images were then saved as .PSD Photoshop Documents and opened in Adobe Photoshop CS4. Full composite images were uniformly contrast adjusted to provide better clarity of tracheae. Completed images were saved with the .TIFF file format in Adobe Photoshop CS4 to be imported into ImageJ ((rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/).
Before posting to FigShare, images were cropped and reduced in size to 100 inches wide in order to reduce file sizes. Higher resolution images are available upon request. You will need to zoom into the images to view the tracheae.

TESS Hunt for Young and Maturing Exoplanets (THYME). XII. A Young Mini-Neptune on the Upper Edge of the Radius Valley in the Hyades Cluster
No full textWe present the discovery and characterization of TOI-4364b, a young mini-Neptune in the tidal tails of the Hyades cluster, identified through TESS transit observations and ground-based follow-up photometry. The planet orbits a bright M dwarf ( K = 9.1 mag) at a distance of 44 pc, with an orbital period of 5.42 days and an equilibrium temperature of K. The host star's well-constrained age of 710 Myr makes TOI-4364b an exceptional target for studying early planetary evolution around low-mass stars. We determined a planetary radius of , indicating that this planet is situated near the upper edge of the radius valley. This suggests that the planet retains a modest H/He envelope. As a result, TOI-4364b provides a unique opportunity to explore the transition between rocky super-Earths and gas-rich mini-Neptunes at the early stages of evolution. Its radius, which may still evolve as a result of ongoing atmospheric cooling, contraction, and photoevaporation, further enhances its significance for understanding planetary development. Furthermore, TOI-4364b’s moderately high transmission spectroscopy metric of 44.2 positions it as a viable candidate for atmospheric characterization with instruments such as JWST. This target has the potential to offer crucial insights into atmospheric retention and loss in young planetary systems

Kinetics during the tuck jump assessment and biomechanical deficits in female athletes 12 months after ACLR surgery.
Get PDFResidual interlimb deficits after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) can lead to functional maladaptation and increase the risk of reinjury. The tuck jump assessment (TJA) may offer a more effective evaluation of ACLR status as compared with traditional tasks owing to increased risk of altered landing mechanics, asymmetrical landing, and increased knee valgus attributed to the cyclical nature of the task. However, it remains unclear whether altered TJA kinetics resolve over time or persist through return-to-play phases of rehabilitation. To examine longitudinal kinetics, asymmetries, and functional performance deficits during TJA at 9 and 12 months after ACLR in female athletes at high risk of reinjury. Female athletes (ACLR, n = 24; controls, n = 19; total, N = 43) performed a single trial of TJA on dual-force plates at 2 time points. The ACLR group (mean ± SD age, 16.8 ± 1.9 years) was tested at 9 and 12 months after surgery, and the control group (16.5 ± 3.6 years) was tested at similar time points. All athletes participated in similar sports and had comparable activity levels. Discrete time point analysis and statistical parametric mapping were used to identify deficits within each group. At 9 months after surgery, the ACLR group exhibited significant interlimb differences in all kinetic variables (P < .05), which persisted at 12 months with only small reductions in magnitude. As compared with controls, the ACLR group demonstrated a persistent offloading strategy in the involved limb by exhibiting larger interlimb asymmetries for a range of kinetic variables and a greater vertical ground-reaction force in the uninvolved limb during most of the stance phase at both time points (P < .001). Distinct differences in functional performance of TJA were evident at both time points, characterized by lower peak vertical ground-reaction force, peak center of mass displacement, and relative vertical leg stiffness and longer ground contact times (P < .001). This study revealed that young female athletes after ACLR exhibit persistent interlimb deficits and functional maladaptations up to 12 months after surgery. The TJA identified significant biomechanical impairments to both limbs, resulting in asymmetrical loading and altered movement strategies as compared with healthy controls. Despite some improvements, athletes with ACLR continued to demonstrate offloading to the uninvolved limb, indicating incomplete neuromuscular recovery
The Effect of Leucine-Enriched β-Lactoglobulin Versus an Isonitrogenous Whey Protein Isolate on Skeletal Muscle Protein Anabolism in Young Healthy Males
No full textBACKGROUND: β-lactoglobulin (BLG) is a protein found within whey protein (WP) that is rich in essential amino acids, most notably, leucine (LEU). LEU is considered the most potent EAA in the postprandial stimulation of muscle protein synthesis (MPS), such that suboptimal protein/essential amino acid (EAA) doses containing higher LEU content elicit muscle anabolism comparable to larger protein doses. Our objective was to test the effects of naturally LEU-rich BLG (~10 g protein) versus isonitrogenous whey protein isolate (WPI, ~10 g) on MPS. METHODS: Ten healthy young men (26 ± 2 y; 179 ± 2 cm; 81 ± 3 kg) received BLG (1.57 g LEU) or WPI (1.02 g LEU) in a randomised double-blind cross-over fashion. A primed constant intravenous infusion of [1,2 13C2] LEU was used to determine MPS (isotope ratio mass spectrometry) at baseline and in response to feeding (FED) and feeding-plus-exercise (FED-EX; 6 × 8 unilateral leg extensions; 75% 1-RM). Plasma insulin and EAA's were quantified. Television and positive ageing in Australia
Get PDFAs a means to engage with others, television offers the viewer a great deal. In Australia commercial TV is particularly popular, and many turn daily to this cultural arena which graphically portrays our shared concerns and values. Viewers are kept informed and entertained, advertisements display the luxuries and necessities that direct lifestyle choices,and local and global stories are presented for mutual consideration. Audiences are connected not only with products,personalities and newsmakers, but also with fellow viewers who are sharing the experience. Retired people take particular advantage of this multi-faceted link with the outside world, when additional leisure time and reduced social and physical mobility create spaces that can be filled with the narratives and 'para-social' connections of a medium that transports the world to the viewer. Yet one definitive statement that can be made about popular television is that older people are rarely acknowledged and often ridiculed. An easily accessible and valuable communications medium marginalises those most dependent upon it - for information and entertainment, but also, I would argue, dependent upon it to help facilitate key recommendations of the 'successful ageing' formula.
Authoritative prescriptions for ageing well emphasise the benefits of social engagement, with television helping to facilitate this by involving the viewer with local concerns and wider accounts of human enterprise. Yet the popular media often presume that older people are no longer viable consumers or citizens, thus alienating them from mediated stories and populations. 'Success', according to commercial media sensibilities, is equated with youthfulness and economic means - twin attributes rarely associated with retired people. As a result, advertising is directed primarily at young, middle-class audiences, and the TV programmes to hook their attention are often typecast with similarly youthful protagonists. Older viewers are taken for granted and rarely acknowledged, and more disconcertingly, stereotyped and ridiculed to empower younger viewers. This dissertation seeks to explore these issues from a sociological perspective, primarily within the Australian context. Research strategies include a detailed analysis of the role of television in older people's lives and how they are portrayed, with results aligned with 'successful ageing' guidelines. Included in this approach is a study of how older people are portrayed on commercial TV in Australia, and a discussion of findings. The final section includes a chapter which consists of an examination of negative media portrayals from a political and human rights perspective, and the final chapter which asks how the oldest and frailest may by impacted by the cultural devaluation of old age
Apocalypticisim in the fiction of William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, and Thomas Pynchon.
Get PDFApocalypse should not be thought of as merely a synonym for chaos or disaster or cataclysmic upheaval; more properly we should think of disclosure, unveiling and revelation. The exact status of literary apocalyptic is the subject of some debate, and in an attempt to help clarify matters an introductory historical survey examines both the formal characteristics of apocalypse and the various critical positions taken in regard to the genre's social influence. Texts considered in the chapter include the Revelation of John and Thomas Pynchon's short story Entropy (1959); theoretical works by Frank Kermode, John Barth, and Jean Baudrillard (amongst others) are also discussed. Chapter One traces the development of William S. Burroughs's apocalyptic sensibility through readings of his correspondence with Allen Ginsberg and the novel The Naked Lunch (1959); the latter's apocalyptic title referring to the "frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork". Chapter Two considers Burroughs's experiments with the "cut-ups" and their application in a number of texts, most notably Nova Express (1964). Chapter Three is concerned with Burroughs's work in the 1970s and 80s, and specifically his concept of Here to Go, a theory of mutability presented as a transcendental antidote to the threat of nuclear annihilation (the author's alleged misogyny and the views of radical US feminists are also taken into account). Chapters Four and Five explore the apocalyptic fiction of J. G. Ballard; topics covered include Ballard's concept of inner space, his debt to Surrealism, and the coded landscapes of his more experimental texts; in particular the "condensed novels" which comprise The Atrocity Exhibition (1970). A concluding chapter returns to the work of Thomas Pynchon, offering a reading of Gravity's Rainbow (1973) which allows us to consider his treatment of such related themes as Paranoia, Holocaust, Apocalypse, and finally, Counterforce
