Helen is representing the Beta Sigma Phi of Weslaco. She won 2nd place in the Street Dress Division. The two piece English tweed suit made of purple bachelor buttons which were clipped to simulate tweed. Material cost was $10.45 and took 450 hours to complete

An Entry in Weslaco's annual "Birthday Party" fashion show. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce to highlight the fruit and vegetables grown in the Rio Grande Valley, area citizens created and modeled clothing made from local fruit, vegetables, and flowers. This winning ensemble is called a "landlubbers's outfit" especially popular with schoolgirls because of its simplicity. Blouse was made of the inner skin of white grapefruit, cut in diamond-shaped pieces; waistcoat of red poinsettia petals, and skirt in inch-square pieces of eggplant. Buttons on the costume were made of lacquered papaya seeds, and her handbag was of eggplant. Inner skin of grapefruit formed a soft, pliable material for the blouse. Two-thousand one-inch pieces of eggplant were cut, and 36 grapefruits and 36 poinsetta petals were used. Total cost was $6; time required to make was 262 hours
