Currency attack/defense with two-sided private information
A currency attack fails on its own when the speculator suffers from her financial problem. This paper extends the existing models and argues that the monetary authority?s willingness to peg and the speculator?s cost of attack are private information. Our model thus accounts for the duration of currency attack/defense, and more importantly, allows for failed attack. We employ an asymmetric war of attrition and gauge the time when the speculator stops attacking, or when the monetary authority de-pegs. Comparative static results throw light on the interest rate policy amidst the Exchange Rate Mechanism Crisis and the Asian Currency CrisisAsymmetric war of attrition; Credibility of policymakers; Failed speculative attack; Persistent effect; Two-sided private information
Automatic key theme extraction in natural language texts
Information is the most powerful resource available to an organisation. Problems arise when the amount of management needed to effectively organise the mass of information available in data-repositories starts to increase, and reaches a level that is impossible to maintain. Instead of providing value to an organisation the information can serve to confuse and hamper. This research presents the topic of automatic key theme extraction as a method for information management, specifically the extraction of pertinent information from natural language texts. The motivation for this research was to achieve improved accuracy in automatic key theme extraction in natural language texts. The performance was evaluated against an industrial context, which was provided by Active Navigation Ltd, a content management system. The author has produced an architecture for theme extraction using a pipeline of individual processing components that adhere to a lossless information strategy. This loss less architecture has shown that it is capable of providing a higher accuracy of extracting key themes from natural language texts than that of Active Navigation. The accurate extraction of key themes is essential as it provides a solid base for other Active Navigation information navigation tasks. These include advanced search, categorisation, building summaries, finding related documents, and dynamic linking. Improving these navigation techniques increases the effectiveness of the content management system.</p
Youth Intolerance of Uncertainty - Parent-Report (Yiu-Pr): A developmentally sensitive measure of intolerance of uncertainty in children
Although intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been proposed as a transdiagnostic feature of anxiety, there has been little consensus on its definition and its subcomponents – especially in youth. We report on the development and initial validation of the Youth Intolerance of Uncertainty – Parent-report (YIU-PR), a developmentally sensitive, parent-report measure of IU. Also, we explored age as a possible moderator of the relationship between IU and symptoms of OCD and anxiety disorders. Caregivers (N = 731, 61.7% female, 73.2% non-Hispanic White) with children between 6 and 17 years old were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk and reported on their child’s IU and anxiety. An exploratory factor analysis of YIU-PR items yielded 4 subscales: Difficulty Tolerating Waiting Periods (α = .90), Doubting and Reassurance Seeking (α = .90), Overestimation of Negative Events (α = .92), and Physical and Behavioral Responses (α = .87). The 26-item YIU-PR demonstrated excellent internal consistency overall (α = .96) as well as concurrent and discriminant validity. The YIU-PR significantly predicted separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in the full sample and generalized anxiety and social anxiety in the clinical subsample. Age did not moderate the relationship between the YIU-PR and anxiety symptoms. Results provide preliminary support for the use of the YIU-PR to measure youth intolerance of uncertainty in clinical and nonclinical settings.</p
