Microwave absorption of film explained accurately by wave cancellation theory
It has been proved previously that in the field of microwave absorption, film and material are confused, and that the impedance matching theory (IM) which is usually applied to metal-backed film is inadequate. By analysis of experimental data from a novel theoretical perspective, it is shown here that the problems with IM cannot be solved even if different criteria such as the value of |Zin - Z0| or the phase difference between Zin (input impedance of film) and Z0 (characteristic impedance of open space or a layered material) are used and therefore the current theories related to IM need to be replaced by wave cancellation theory. The analysis in this work applies to published data and supports the new theories against the current ones. The conditions for the minima of reflection loss |RL| at large values of |Zin - Z0| have also been determined by transmission-line theory
Halomonas and Pathway Engineering for Bioplastics Production
Traditional microbial chassis, including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Ralstonia eutropha, and Pseudomonas putida, are grown under neutral pH and mild osmotic pressure for production of chemicals and materials. They tend to be contaminated easily by many microorganisms. To address this issue, next-generation industrial biotechnology employing halophilic Halomonas spp. has been developed for production of bioplastics polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and other chemicals. Halomonas spp. that can be grown contamination free under open and unsterile condition at alkali pH and high NaCl have been engineered to produce several PHA polymers in elongated or enlarged cells. New pathways can also be constructed both in plasmids and on chromosomes for Halomonas spp. Synthetic biology approaches and parts have been developed for Halomonas spp., allowing better control of their growth and product formation as well as morphology adjustment. Halomonas spp. and their synthetic biology will play an increasingly important role for industrial production of large volume chemicals.</p

Reflection Loss is a Parameter for Film, not Material
In studies of microwave absorption in the current literature, theories such as reflection loss, impedance matching, the delta function, and the quarter-wavelength model have been inappropriately applied. As shown in this case study, these problems need to be corrected as they are representative of similar work in the literature
Cross-Layer Design for Space-Time coded MIMO Systems over Rice Fading Channel
AbstractA cross-layer design (CLD) scheme for space-time coded MIMO systems over Rice fading channel is presented by combining adaptive modulation and automatic repeat request, and the corresponding system performance is investigated well. The fading gain switching thresholds subject to a target packet error rate (PER) and fixed power constraint are derived. According to these results, and using the generalized Marcum Q-function, the calculation formulae of the average spectrum efficiency (SE) and PER of the system with CLD are derived. As a result, closed-form expressions for average SE and PER are obtained. These expressions include some existing expressions in Rayleigh channel as special cases. With these expressions, the system performance in Rice fading channel is evaluated effectively. Numerical results verify the validity of the theoretical analysis. The results show that the system performance in Rice channel is effectively improved as Rice factor increases, and outperforms that in Rayleigh channel
