TACC3-ch-TOG track the growing tips of microtubules independently of clathrin and Aurora-A phosphorylation
The interaction between TACC3 (transforming acidic coiled coil protein 3) and the microtubule polymerase ch-TOG (colonic, hepatic tumor overexpressed gene) is evolutionarily conserved. Loading of TACC3–ch-TOG onto spindle microtubules requires the phosphorylation of TACC3 by Aurora-A kinase and the subsequent interaction of TACC3 with clathrin to form a microtubule binding surface. Whether there is a pool of TACC3–ch-TOG that is independent of clathrin in human cells, and what is the function of this pool, are open questions. Here, we report that TACC3 is recruited to the plus-ends of microtubules by its association with ch-TOG and that this pool is independent of phosphorylation and binding to clathrin. The plus-end binding of TACC3–ch-TOG persists in interphase and we propose that one cellular function of TACC3–ch-TOG is to modulate cell migration. We also describe the distinct subcellular pools of TACC3, ch-TOG and clathrin. TACC3 is often described as a centrosomal protein, but we show that there is no significant population of TACC3 at centrosomes. The delineation of distinct protein pools reveals a simplified view of how these proteins are organized and controlled by post-translational modification

Re-examining location antecedents and pace of foreign direct investment: Evidence from Taiwanese investments in China
[[abstract]]The objectives of this study are to examine variations in the preferences of location antecedents and the pace of foreign direct investment (FDI) by multinational enterprises' (MNEs) in relation to increased FDI experience and evolved strategic intentions. Using a rank-ordered logit model (ROLM), this study analyzes a total of 2688 investments in China from 731 Taiwanese-listed firms (TLFs) during 1997-2007. The results show that TLFs demonstrate distinct preferences for location antecedents at different stages of their FDI in China. In the early stages, TLFs attempt to exploit their existing competency and favor locations with advantages in infrastructure, labor cost, market size, and openness. In the later stages, locations with better production efficiency, labor quality, and R&D capability are more attractive because TLFs have become accustomed to the local business environment and intend to explore capabilities that create sustainable competitiveness in the face of competitive challenge. The results show that two antecedents, agglomeration and policy incentive, have consistent influence on location choice during the entire FDI process. The results also show that greater FDI experience contributes to a more intensive inter-investment time span and accelerates a TLF's investment pace. Investigation on perceived country image of imported food
[[abstract]]Product origin communicates a substantial external message to food shoppers in terms of product quality, and is conceived of as a competitive advantage for firms in global markets. As such, greater understanding of country image and its pertinent dimensions will be beneficial for international food traders and policy-makers in developing marketing strategy. In the current study, two countries (the US and Japan) and two food products (fruit and beer) are investigated based on a stratified sample surveyed in Taipei, Taiwan (N = 200), and three major findings were derived. Distinct image patterns for the US and Japan are firstly justified in fruit and beer, respectively. Next, the influence of product similarity on country image is confirmed; intrinsically similar products from the same country of origin present parallel image patterns. Finally, our results show that greater consumer interest in a foreign country results in higher country image evaluations and, to some extent, greater consumption of imported foods. Managerial implications, limitations, and directions for future research are provided. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.[[note]]SC
