Impulsivity in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: exploring the mediating effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms
BackgroundThe underlying mechanism of impulsivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients is complex and still unclear. Previous studies have not thoroughly explored whether impulsivity in OCD patients is a result of the obsessive-compulsive symptoms themselves or other contributing factors. This study aimed to explore whether cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and impulsivity in a clinical population with OCD.MethodsThis was a case-control study that recruited 65 OCD patients (male/female=31/34) and 65 healthy controls (male/female =23/42), matched for age, gender, and education level. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) were adopted.ResultsOCD patients scored higher on BIS-11 attentional and non-planning impulsiveness and total scores (all p < 0.05). On CERQ, OCD patients showed elevated maladaptive strategies (self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, blaming others) and reduced adaptive strategies (positive reappraisal) (all p < 0.05). Attentional impulsiveness positively correlated with OCD severity, depression, and maladaptive strategies (all p < 0.05). Non-planning impulsiveness and BIS-11 total scores positively correlated with depression and negatively with adaptive strategies (all p < 0.05). After adjusting for age, gender, depression level, there was only a significant negative correlation between BIS-11 non-planning impulsiveness and CERQ maladaptive strategies (r = -0.28, p < 0.05). Mediation analysis revealed significant indirect effects of OCD severity on impulsivity via adaptive strategies/depression (β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.03~0.24, p = 0.012) and via maladaptive strategies/depression (β = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.00~0.23, p = 0.042), but no significant direct or total effects.ConclusionsOCD symptom severity indirectly influences impulsivity through emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms, highlighting the need to target these mediators in clinical interventions

Investigation of Dietary Factors and Esophageal Cancer Knowledge: Comparison of Rural Residents in High- and Low-incidence Areas
AbstractTo compare the differences in dietary status and knowledge of esophageal cancer (EC) between residents of high- and low-incidence areas. We investigated dietary conditions and EC knowledge among residents in high- and low-EC incidence areas (Yanting and Qingzhen counties). Residents in Yanting consumed more pickled vegetables, salted meat and barbecued food (P < 0.05). Analysis of the past ten-year trend in Yanting consumed fresh vegetables/fruits, beans, sauerkraut, hot food, and barbecued food had gradually increased, and the trend was less than that in Qingzhen County. However, the gradual increasing trend in consumption of pickled vegetables, pickled meat, and spicy food over the past 10 years was greater (P < 0.05). Drinking water in Yanting County was healthier than that in Qingzhen County (P < 0.05). In terms of EC knowledge, the proportions of residents in Yanting who had a clear understanding, knowledge or had heard of EC or knew the common causes, primary symptoms, therapeutic measures, preventive measures, and government interventions for EC were all higher than in Qingzhen (P < 0.05). Residents in Yanting had greater EC knowledge but more harmful dietary habits than those in Qingzhen.</jats:p
Characteristics of Speciation of Heavy Metals in Municipal Sewage Sludge of Guangzhou as Fertilizer
AbstractApplication of municipal sewage sludge to agricultural land especially in shallow soils, demands to validate the maximum amount of heavy metal, monitoring its effects on soil and on plants. The use of sewage sludge as a fertilizer and soil amendment has resulted in high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and food limiting its use. Controlling the pollution of heavy metals is the key factor to realize the safe utilization of sewage sludge. In the present study, the heavy metal stabilizers were added to sludge contained in used plastic containers, through artificially watering or naturally rain falling, the nutrient components flowed out with leaching water and fertilized plants but the heavy metals retained in the sludge within container. The potential toxic risks from heavy metals of sludge depend on their chemical speciation. The contents of heavy metals in different treatments were analyzed and their speciation was determined. The pot experiments with plants (Zea mays and Laetuca satiuali) showed that the positive effects of the mixture of the sludge and K2SO4 on plant production and reduction of heavy metal contents in plants were significant. The BCR sequential extraction procedure was applied for measurement of heavy metals in the experimental sludge. The results showed that the concentrations of Zn were predominant in acid exchangeable and reducible fractions, and Cu was principally distributed in oxidizable fractions. Metals-bound sludge could be collected easily after treatment to prevent the secondary pollution, provided the heavy metals were fixed within the container and reduced obviously the leaching of heavy metals to soil
