    Development and optimisation of a duplex real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR assay targeting the VP7 and NS2 genes of African horse sickness virus

    Nucleotide sequences of 52 South African isolates of African horse sickness virus (AHSV) collected during 2004–2005 and including viruses of all nine AHSV serotypes, were used to design and develop a duplex real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) assay targeting the VP7 (S8) and NS2 (S9) genes of AHSV. The assay was optimized for detection of AHSV in fresh and frozen blood of naturally infected horses. Assay performance was enhanced using random hexamers rather than gene-specific primers for RT, and with denaturation of double-stranded RNA in the presence of random hexamers. The assay was efficient with a linear range of at least five orders of magnitude. The analytical sensitivity of the assay was 132 copies of the target genes (4125 copies per ml of blood), and the assay was at least 10-fold more sensitive than virus isolation on BHK-21 cells.     A stochastic reachability analysis approach to aircraft conflict detection and resolution

    This paper addresses aircraft conflict detection and resolution from a stochastic reachability analysis perspective. A characterization of the uncertainty on the aircraft future positions due to the presence of wind is obtained in terms of probabilistic reach sets. This involves formulating a chanceconstrained optimization problem and solving it approximately via simulation, according to the so-called scenario approach. Conflict prediction can then be performed by verifying if reach sets of different aircraft get closer than some minimum safety distance. When a conflict is detected, then, the aircraft flight plans are modified so as to minimize the traveled distance while maintaining reach sets at some appropriate distance. A numerical example shows the efficacy of the proposed approach

    A novel probabilistic data association based MIMO detector using joint detection of consecutive symbol vectors

    A new probabilistic data association (PDA) approach is proposed for symbol detection in spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. By designing a joint detection (JD) structure for consecutive symbol vectors in the same transmit burst, more a priori information is exploited when updating the estimated posterior marginal probabilities for each symbol per iteration. Therefore the proposed PDA detector (denoted as PDA-JD detector) outperforms the conventional PDA detectors in the context of correlated input bit streams. Moreover, the conventional PDA detectors are shown to be a special case of the PDA-JD detector. Simulations and analyses are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method

    Multi-aircraft conflict detection and resolution based on probabilistic reach sets

    In this brief, a novel scheme to multi-aircraft conflict detection and resolution is introduced. A key feature of the proposed scheme is that uncertainty affecting the aircraft future positions along some look-ahead prediction horizon is accounted for via a probabilistic reachability analysis approach. In particular, ellipsoidal probabilistic reach sets are determined by formulating a chance-constrained optimization problem and solving it via a simulation-based method called scenario approach. Conflict detection is then performed by verifying if the ellipsoidal reach sets of different aircraft intersect. If a conflict is detected, then the aircraft flight plans are redesigned by solving a second-order cone program resting on the approximation of the ellipsoidal reach sets with spheres with constant radius along the look-ahead horizon. A bisection procedure allows one to determine the minimum radius such that the ellipsoidal reach sets of different aircraft along the corresponding new flight plans do not intersect. Some numerical examples are presented to show the efficacy of the proposed scheme

It relies on a QoS-constrained equivalent bandwidth estimator employed at the receiver, which is used for triggering the adjustment of video layers at the video source. Simulations are conducted to illustrate its efficiency by showing that it is capable of accommodating different channel qualities without their prior knowledge
