Introduction to Cartilage
Cartilage is a supporting connective tissue that, together with the bone, forms the framework supporting the body as a whole. There are many distinct types of cartilage, which exhibit numerous similarities as well as differences. Among them, articular cartilage is the best known and the most studied type. Articular cartilage is the thin layer of connective tissue that covers the articulating ends of bones in synovial (diarthrodial) joints. It provides a smooth surface for joint movement and acts as a load-bearing medium that protects the bone and distributes stress. The intense interest in articular cartilage is motivated by the critical role its degradation plays in arthritis and related joint diseases, which are the number one cause of disability in humans. This chapter discusses the physical, chemical and cellular properties of cartilage that give the tissue its extraordinary load-bearing characteristics
Martial arts fiction : translational migrations east and west
This thesis was motivated by Robert Chard's puzzlement over the translational
phenomenon of martial arts fiction in the West. It proposes to address how the
translational migration of martial arts fiction took place, first to other Asian countries in the
1920's, but to the West only after a lapse of a few decades beginning in the early 1990's.
Adopting a descriptive approach as described by Gideon Toury, the thesis is intended to
add further to the limited inventory of case studies in urgent demand to test the polysystem
theory propounded by Even-Zohar.
The thesis is made up of two parts. Part I is a macro-level study of martial arts fiction,
intended to contribute to testing the limits of the polysystem theory. After examining
Chinese fiction as a low form in the Chinese literary polysystem and its weak function as
translated literature in the Western literary polysystem, the study explores the translational
phenomenon of martial arts fiction in the West as well as the concurrent phenomenon as to
why so little of martial arts fiction has been translated into Western languages, compared to
the copious amount into other Asian languages, to the extent of stimulating a new literary
genre or (re)writing martial arts fiction in indigenous languages in Indonesia, Vietnam and
Korea, sinicized countries or countries boasting large overseas Chinese communities.
Issues and problems related to these translational activities and cultural phenomena are
presented as tools to test the limits of the polysystem theory.
Part II is a micro-level study focussing on the specifics of rendering Fox Volant of the
Snowy Mountain by Jin Yong into English. I will argue, in the main, that many difficulties,
inherent in both the translating and reading processes, can be constructed within the
theoretical framework of Andre Lefevere's concept of "constraint", particularly that of the
universe of discourse. Lefevere's connotation of the universe of discourse will be expanded
to embrace different cultural presuppositions and literary assumptions underlying two
divergent world cultures, hence different reader expectations in the reading process.
It is hoped that the findings and results of this descriptive case history of martial arts fiction
as a literary genre in translational migrations will contribute to the accumulation of
knowledge
Growing out of poverty: trends and patterns of urban poverty in China 1988–2002
This paper estimates trends in absolute poverty in urban China from 1988 to 2002 using the Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP) surveys. Poverty incidence curves are plotted, showing that poverty has fallen markedly during the period regardless of the exact location of the poverty line. Income inequality rose from 1988 to 1995 but has been fairly constant thereafter. Models of the determination of income and poverty reveal widening differentials by education, sex and party membership. The system identification and control of Hammerstein system using non-uniform rational B-spline neural network and particle swarm optimization
In this paper a new system identification algorithm is introduced for Hammerstein systems based on observational input/output data. The nonlinear static function in the Hammerstein system is modelled using a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURB) neural network. The proposed system identification algorithm for this NURB network based Hammerstein system consists of two successive stages. First the shaping parameters in NURB network are estimated using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) procedure. Then the remaining parameters are estimated by the method of the singular value decomposition (SVD). Numerical examples including a model based controller are utilized to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach. The controller consists of computing the inverse of the nonlinear static function approximated by NURB network, followed by a linear pole assignment controller

Water in minerals of the continental lithospheric mantle and overlying lower crust: A comparative study of peridotite and granulite xenoliths from the North China Craton
Water contents of clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and olivine in mantle peridotite xenoliths from the Hannuoba and Nushan basaltic volcanoes (North China Craton) were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results show that contents vary from 50 to 155 ppm (H(2)O wt.) for clinopyroxene and from 20 to 55 ppm for orthopyroxene in Hannuoba peridotites, and from 5 to 355 ppm for clinopyroxene and from 5 to 140 ppm for orthopyroxene in Nushan peridotites. Water contents in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene define a good positive correlation with a ratio of similar to 2.1. This, together with the roughly homogeneous distribution of hydrogen from core to rim region in pyroxene grains, suggests that they have preserved the initial water content of the mantle source. By contrast olivine in these peridotites contain very little, if any, water, which were probably caused by significant loss of H during their ascent due to the faster H diffusion in olivine relative to pyroxenes and by the relatively lower water content in the mantle source of Hannuoba and Nushan. Water contrast between Precambrian and Phanerozoic continental lower crust of eastern China.Journal of Geophysical Research doi:10.1029/2007JB005541] have shown that the water content ranges from 275 to 720 pprn for clinopyroxene, from 60 to 185 pprn for orthopyroxene and from 65 to 205 ppm for plagioclase in Hannuoba mafic granulite xenoliths, and from 200 to 2330 ppm for clinopyroxene, from 140 to 1270 pprn for orthopyroxene and from 145 to 900 pprn in plagioclase in Nushan maficgranulite xenoliths.The significant difference between the water content of peridotite and that of coexisting mafic granulite xenoliths, e.g. 0-100 ppm (mostly 200 ppm) for the estimated bulk concentration, demonstrates that the distribution of water in the deep continental lithosphere is vertically heterogeneous. This may be due to the different genesis of peridotites and granulites (the residue of partial melting vs. the product of melt crystallization). Based on these water data, we define the theological structure of the lowermost crust and uppermost mantle below the Hannuoba and Nushan regions. The viscosity (strength) of the underlying shallow mantle is similar, whereas the deep crust is relatively stronger at Hannuoba and weaker at Nushan. Assessment of Self-Archiving in Institutional Repositories: Depositorship and Full-Text Availability
This research evaluates the success of open access self-archiving in several well-known institutional repositories. Two assessment factors have been applied to examine the current practice of self-archiving: depositorship and the availability of full text. This research discovers that the rate of author self-archiving is low and that the majority of documents have been deposited by a librarian or administrative staff. Similarly, the rate of full-text availability is relatively low, except for Australian repositories. By identifying different practices of self-archiving, repository managers can create new strategies for the operation of their repositories and the development of archiving policies
