Synonyms Cultivating life; Health preservation; Longevity and Chinese medicine; Nourishing life in China Definition Yang sheng is a core component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that puts paramount emphasis on prevention of illnesses. The Chinese words yang refers to nourishing, nurturing, nursing, taking care of, fostering, or promoting and sheng means life, birth, growth, vitality, and health. Putting together, yang sheng refers to nourishing life, fostering health and well-being, and pursuing longevity (Chen, 2011). According to the definition in a recent textbook “Life-Nurturing Science in TCM” published by the People’s Medical Publishing House, a major Chinese academic publisher in healthcare topics, yang sheng is “the type of subjective and objective pro-health behaviors with which people take care of their life consciously through various means and methods, with reference to their understanding of the universal law of life and nature. It is also a health ....

Searching electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave signals

Gravitational-wave (GW) were detected on 14 September 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). The following challenge was the joint observation of a Compact binary coalescence (CBC) in both GW and Electromagnetic (EM) channels. This is difficult because GW sky location uncertainties are typically tens or hundreds of square degrees. Multimessenger observations of binary system containing a neutron star were expected to answer many open questions of modern astrophysics, from the nature of short GRB to the origin of heavy elements. For this reason the astronomical community worldwide was preparing for this event. The work of this thesis was developed in this context. My work focused on the search of the possible optical counterparts of GW events. For the search of the expected optical transient I tested, implemented and exploited two complementary approaches using the data of the observing facilities available to the collaborations of which I am member: a) The GRAvitational Wave Inaf TeAm (GRAWITA), which performs an optical transient search with the 2.6 meter VLT survey telescope (VST). As part of GRAWITA, I developed the transient detection pipeline based on image difference of the wide field survey. I applied this tool to the follow up of three GW triggers, GW150914, GW151226 and GW170814. b) The Distance Less Than 40 Mpc survey (DLT40), which makes use of 40 cm robotic telescopes for targeting individual galaxies. In this project, I developed a prioritization algorithm to select galaxies inside the GW error-box, with the aim to maximise the detection probability in case of nearby triggers. My algorithm was used to define the strategy and follow-up ten GW triggers. After a few inconclusive attempts, on August 17, 2017 with DLT40, I contributed to the discovery of the first optical counterpart of a GW source, DLT17ck (labelled also AT2017gfo and SSS17a). With GRAWITA we observed this source with an almost daily cadence for two weeks both in imaging and spectroscopy, proving that the binary neutron star (BNS) merging produces r-process elements. I used the previous record of the DLT40 SN search to derive one of the first direct estimate of the BNS rates. I also contributed to a first attempt to measure the Hubble constant from combined GW-EM observations. Finally, I developed a machine learning algorithm with the aim of a more rapid and efficient transient candidate selection. This tool is already implemented in the ongoing DLT40 SN survey and it will be used by GRAWITA in the incoming LIGO-VIRGO collaboration (LVC) O3 run

Error resilient techniques for storage elements of low power design

Over two decades of research has led to numerous low-power design techniques being reported. Two popular techniques are supply voltage scaling and power gating. This thesis studies the impact of these two design techniques on the reliability of embedded processor registers and memory systems in the presence of transient faults; and with the aim to develop and validate efficient mitigation techniques to improve reliability with small cost of energy consumption, performance and area overhead. This thesis presents three original contributions. The first contribution presents a technique for improving the reliability of embedded processors. A key feature of the technique is low cost, which is achieved through reuse of the scan chain for state monitoring, and it is effective because it can correct single and multiple bit errors through hardware and software respectively. To validate the technique, ARMR Cortex TM -M0 embedded microprocessor is implemented in FPGA and further synthesised using 65-nm technology to quantify the cost in terms of area, latency and energy. It is shown that the presented technique has a small area overhead (8.6%) with less than 4% worst-case increase in critical path. The second contribution demonstrates that state integrity of flip-flops is sensitive to process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variation through measurements from 82 test chips. A PVT-aware state protection technique is presented to ensure state integrity of flip-flops while achieving maximum leakage savings. The technique consists of characterisation algorithm and employs horizontal and vertical parity for error detection and correction. Silicon results show that flip-flops state integrity is preserved while achieving up to 17.6% reduction in retention voltage across 82-dies. Embedded processors memory systems are susceptible to transient errors and blanket protection of every part of memory system through ECC is not cost effective. The final contribution addresses the reliability of embedded processor memory systems and describes an architectural simulation-based framework for joint optimisation of reliability, energy consumption and performance. Accurate estimation of memory reliability with targeted protection is proposed to identify and protect the most vulnerable part of the memory system to minimise protection cost. Furthermore, L1-cache resizing together with voltage and frequency scaling is proposed for further energy savings while maintaining performance and reliability. The contributions presented are supported by detailed analyses using state-of-the-art design automation tools, in-house software tools and validated using FPGA and silicon implementation of commercial low power embedded processor

The relevance of the study is caused by transformations of traditional Chinese medicine occurring in modern Chinese society. Practiсes of yang sheng (the practices of «life nurturing») occupy an important place in traditional Chinese medicine, have a long history and are aimed at maintaining a harmonious state of the body. However, under the influence of Western medicine and culture, new forms of yang sheng are emerging, and the practices of health preservation of modern Chinese people is in adapting to new changes. The key objective of the article is a socio-philosophical analysis of the concepts of yang sheng in Chinese society. The paper will examine the socio-philosophical foundations of the concept of yang sheng and analyze a number of key practices of «life nurturing» in Chinese society in the context of traditional Chinese medicine. Methods: study and analysis of literary sources with an emphasis on historico-philosophical and socio-cultural analysis of the research topic. Results. The authors reviewed in detail the concept of the historico-cultural phenomenon of yang sheng in modern Chinese society, its connection with traditional Chinese medicine, as well as traditional and modern forms of the practices of «life nurturing»
