    No full text

Tai Chi Chuan Training Improves the Pulmonary Function of Asthmatic Children

    No full text
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tai Chi Chuan, a traditional Chinese exercise, is thought to improve cardiopulmonary function in patients with chronic disease. This study investigated the effect of Tai Chi Chuan on the pulmonary function and daily symptoms of asthmatic children. METHODS: Thirty asthmatic children were enrolled into the study. Fifteen of the 30 children participated in a 12-week Tai Chi Chuan program and the remaining 15 constituted the control group. Prior to study participation, the pulmonary function of all enrolled children was assessed at rest, after exercise, and after exercise plus iced water. A 3-day symptoms questionnaire was also completed and a score obtained after each pulmonary function test. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in baseline pulmonary function and severity of asthmatic symptoms before study commencement, at rest, after exercise, or after exercise plus iced water. However, after the 12-week program, children in the Tai Chi Chuan group had a significant improvement in pulmonary function compared to the control group. Although there were no significant differences in post-training symptom scores at rest and after exercise between the two groups, under the stronger challenge of exercise plus iced water, children in the Tai Chi Chuan group had milder symptoms than those in the control group. CONCLUSION: Our data show that Tai Chi Chuan can improve the pulmonary function of asthmatic children. However, long- term follow-up is required to determine the impact of Tai Chi Chuan on the severity of asthmatic symptoms

    No full text
The assignment for the Bachelor thesis was proposing and creating the Multimedia Basic Programme of 24 Forms of Yang Style Tai chi chuan for beginners. In the theoretical part of the assignment we give the fundamental information about the Chinese martial art Tai chi chuan and about its basic exercise principles. Further on we introduce the phases of motoric learning and the education process concerning the practice of Tai chi chuan. In the practical part we are rather dealing with the suggestion of the Multimedia Basic Programme of 24 Forms of Yang Style Tai chi chuan and its software processing, including the description of table of contents. This is supplied with the photo documentation, which graphicly shows the feet position in individual steps of Tai chi chuan practice. The same principle implies synchronizing of the first exercises of the 24 Forms. The important part is also the photo documentation showing the most common mistakes in practicing Tai chi chuan, which by its exercising, is important to avoid. The Basic Programme on the DVD shows: the introduction of practice, chi kung, basic principles of body work and weight balance, the preparatory exercise, basic steps and stances, individual movements of 24 Forms, summary of routine 24 Forms, demonstration of applications

Residential self-selection in the relationship between the built environment and travel behavior: A literature review and research agenda

    No full text
This chapter gives an overview of the current debates on residential self-selection and presents a related research agenda. Here, we define residential self-selection as “the tendency of people to choose residential locations based on their travel abilities, needs and preferences.” Debates relate to theory/causalities (including the role of attitudes), research methods, empirical findings (including the magnitude of the importance of residential self-selection for the influence of the built environment on travel behavior and the dominance of OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries), and the implications for planning. The main contribution is in translating the current debates into a research agenda. Challenging avenues for future research are partly inspired by these debates, and include changing attitudes, qualitative research, multiple causal structures, extending the scope to other areas than residential areas, the existence of threshold values for the strength of preferences to be important for residential self-selection, the role of perceived accessibility, non-OECD countries, and planning implications.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Transport and Logistic
