Between environmental literature and ocean literature, Syaman Rapongan and Liao Hongji
The subject of the bachelor thesis is a literary analysis of selected works with oceanic subject matter by contemporary Taiwanese authors Syaman Rapongan (*1957) and Liao Hongji (*1957). Rapongan's novel The Eyes of the Sky (2012) and Liao Hongji's short story cycle Fishermen (1996) will be presented in the broader context of "bentu literature" (bentu wenxue; i.e., local Taiwanese literature) and closely related environmental and ocean literature. In the analytical part, the author will focus on the motivic construction in the work of Rapongan and Liao in relation to ocean and environmental themes. The main focus will be on the differences in the conception of the ocean and marine culture in Rapongan's work as a member of the indigenous tribe Tao, and Liao Hongji, whose origin is Han. The thesis further examines whether and how environmental and oceanic literature overlap, using Wu Mingyi's definition of environmental literature. Keywords Syaman Rapongan, Liao Hongji, ocean literature, environmental literature, bentu wenxu

The hidden piece in inflammatory bowel diseases : The significance of intestinal mucus in mediating the bacteria-cells crosstalk
Inflammatory bowels diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions with a complex not yet fully understood pathogenesis, characterized by a compromised intestinal barrier. Traditionally, the gut microbiota and the intestinal epithelium have been considered the primary contributors to this dysfunction. However, emerging evidence underscore the crucial role of a third key player: the intestinal mucus. Mucus acts as an equal partner alongside the epithelium and microbiota, functioning as a cell-free interface that filters molecules and toxins while preventing bacterial penetration through its unique structural and compositional properties. Despite its significance, the role of mucus in IBD remains underappreciated, with relative few studies focusing specifically on mucus compared to ones centred on epithelial cells and bacteria. This review explores the features of the intestinal barrier by exanimating each component of the gut mucosa (i.e., epithelium, microbiota, and mucus) from a mucus-centred perspective. In this way, we aim to highlight the crucial role of mucus in IBD and its importance for new potential therapeutic treatments
New insights into principles of scaffolds design for bone application
This thesis presents deeper insights into bone applicable biomaterials’ design. Poor affinity of BMP-2 towards scaffolds required supra-physiological dose administration. Though molecules containing sulfate could sustain BMP-2 release, side effects occurred due to BMP-2 supra-dose, or these sulfate-containing biomolecules. Improved affinity between BMP-2 and scaffolds was first witnessed by using an acidic carrier (paper I). Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrazone derived hydrogels having a pH of 4.5-loaded BMP-2 showed sustained release of bioactive BMP-2 in vitro and enhanced bone formation in vivo, while pH 7 HA hydrogels showed Fickian behavior and less bone formation in vivo. Computational evaluation revealed stronger electrostatic interactions between BMP-2, and HA were predominant at pH 4.5, whereas, weaker Van der Waals interactions played a key role at pH 7. During the pre-bone formation phase, endogenous cell responses to pH 4.5 and 7 with or without BMP-2 were investigated. HA hydrogels exhibited extraordinary biocompatibility and recruitment of neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages and stromal cells regardless of hydrogels’ pH and BMP-2 presence. The different inflammatory responses to HA hydrogels were observed (Appendix). Thiol derivatives can cleave the disulfide bond of BMP-2 to generate inactive monomeric BMP-2. In paper II, thiol-acrylate chemistry-based HA hydrogels (HA-SH) were compared to hydrazone-based HA hydrogels as BMP-2 carriers. Thiol modified HA disrupted BMP-2 integrity and bioactivity. HA-SH hydrogels with BMP-2 exhibited less bioactive BMP-2 release in vitro and induced less bone formation in vivo. Accumulated evidence has shown great osteogenic potential of lithium ions (Li). In paper III, we coordinated Li onto HA-PVA hydrazone hydrogels (Li-gel); Li-gel enhanced 3D cultured hMSCs osteogenic differentiation and induced higher bone formation in CAM defect model. Instead of BMP-2 protein, delivery of BMP-2-coding-plasmid can produce BMP-2 over a long term at a closer physiological level. Yet, efficient gene delivery reagents are needed. In paper IV, two novel gene delivery nanoplexes were developed by post coating DNA-nanoplexes with chondroitin sulfate (CS). To ensure the stability, aldehyde-modified CS (CS-CHO) reacted with free amines of pDNA/PEI complexes. We provided first evidence that CS-CHO coated nanoplexes controlled the release from endosomes, which is essential for higher transfection efficiency
Study of tapered glass capillary focusing MeV ion beam
In recent years, tapered glass capillary ion beam focusing is developing rapidly. It is attractive for simple, compact, low cost and easy use. However, the focusing mechanism for MeV ion beams is still indistinct. We present several experimental results of focusing 2 MeV He+ beam. Ion beams were focused by tapered glass capillaries with various outlet inner diameters from several micron to hundred micron. The current densities, angle divergences and energy spectra of the transmitted ion beams are measured. The results proved that 2 MeV He+ ions can focused and guided by our capillaries. The energy spectra show that a great part of transmitted ions experienced obvious energy loss, which is different from results of others research groups. We discussed the reason and charged it to the larger incident angle. Considered the incident ions with larger incident angle, the charge will distribute in a layer of micro meter depth in the capillary's inner wall, but not the surface. The energy loss and many other spectra characters can be explained in this way. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Study on the Effect of Gamma-Ray Irradiation on the Adsorption of 99Tc and Re by a Silica-Based Pyridine Resin
A silica-based anion exchange resin was synthesized and used to remove 99Tc from real radioactive liquid waste. The adsorbent had a uniform particle size and exhibited good thermal stability up to 100 °C, which is promising for large-scale column experiments. In accordance with the chemical similarity with Tc, Re was used as a surrogate in this study. The N 1s high-resolution XPS spectra of the adsorbent before and after the adsorption of Re indicated that the ion exchange reaction was the controlling mechanism in the process. After γ-ray irradiation, the changing trend of the Kd was consistent, which showed that the competitive adsorption of NO3− led to a decrease in Kd. The adsorption capacity for the Re decreased slightly from 35.8 to 31.9 mg/g with the increase in the absorbed dose from 0 to 50 kGy. The separation and recovery of Re and the coexisting ions were achieved by chromatographic separation experiments, and the recovery percentage of Re was 86%. In real radioactive liquid waste, N3/SiO2 exhibited good selectivity toward 99Tc over the coexisting metals, namely, 90Sr, 137Cs, 241Am, and U, and the decontamination efficiency of 99Tc attained 65%
