Towards accurate group activity analysis in videos: robust saliency detection and effective feature modeling

Human activity analysis is an important area of computer vision research today. The goal of human activity analysis is to automatically analyze ongoing activities from an unknown video. The ability to analyze complex human activities from videos has many important applications, such as smart camera system, video surveillance, etc. However, it is still far from an off-the-shelf system. There are many challenging problems and it is still an active research area. This dissertation focuses on addressing two problems: various camera motions and effective modeling of group behaviors. We propose a unified and robust framework to detect salient motions from diverse types of videos. Given a video sequence that is recorded from either a stationary or moving camera, our algorithm is able to detect the salient motion regions. The model is inspired by two observations: 1) background motion caused by orthographic cameras lies in a low rank subspace, and 2) pixels belonging to one trajectory tend to group together. Based on these two observations, we introduce a new model using both low rank and group sparsity constraints. It is able to robustly decompose a motion trajectory matrix into foreground and background ones. Extensive experiments demonstrate very competitive performance on both synthetic data and real videos. After salient motion detection, a new method is proposed to model group behaviors in video sequences. This approach effectively models group activities based on social behavior analysis. Different from previous work that uses independent local features, our method explores the relationships between the current behavior state of a subject and its actions. An interaction energy potential function is proposed to represent the current behavior state of a subject, and velocity is used as its actions. Our method does not depend on human detection, so it is robust to detection errors. Instead, tracked salient points are able to provide a good estimation of modeling group interaction. We evaluate our algorithm in two datasets: UMN and BEHAVE. Experimental results show its promising performance against the state-of-art methods.Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Xinyi Cu

Synchronous Inflation of a Valvuloplasty Balloon Catheter With Heart Rate: In-Vitro Evaluation in Terms of Dilatation Performance

Balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV), a minimally invasive procedure to alleviate aortic valve stenosis, commonly employs rapid ventricular pacing (RVP) for balloon stabilization. However, the repeated and extended operation time associated with this technique poses potential complications. This paper introduces a novel approach to mitigate these concerns by employing a dilatation mechanism that is synchronized with the cardiac frequency, wherein the balloon catheter is fully inflated and deflated to a safe, low volume during the decrement of the ventricular pressure. The synchronized pacing was tested at a heart rate of 60bpm. To experimentally validate the performance of this new approach, mock aortic roots reproducing different calcification patterns were used to compare the leaflets' mobility after the dilatation test with traditional BAV. Results confirm successful balloon pacing, maintaining low volume before the ventricular pressure increases. The dilatation performance assessment underscores that the proposed methodology resulted in a higher improvement in terms of the transvalvular pressure gradient and opening area. Optimal performance occurs at 60bpm, yielding a 30.28% gradient decrease and a 21.35% opening area increase. This research represents a notable step forward toward the development of BAV devices capable of autonomous stabilization, eliminating the need for RVP and its related complications. Furthermore, the use of calcified aortic root (AR) phantoms contributes to an enhanced understanding of hemodynamic implications during BAV procedures

Nonlinear frequency conversion provides essential tools for light generation, photon entanglement, and manipulation. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess huge nonlinear susceptibilities and 3R-stacked TMD crystals further combine broken inversion symmetry and aligned layering, representing ideal candidates to boost the nonlinear optical gain with minimal footprint. Here, we report on the efficient frequency conversion of 3R-MoS2, revealing the evolution of its exceptional second-order nonlinear processes along the ordinary (in-plane) and extraordinary (out-of-plane) directions. By measuring second harmonic generation (SHG) of 3R-MoS2 with various thickness - from monolayer (~0.65 nm) to bulk (~1 {\mu}m) - we present the first measurement of the in-plane SHG coherence length (~530 nm) at 1520 nm and achieve record nonlinear optical enhancement from a van der Waals material, >10^4 stronger than a monolayer. It is found that 3R-MoS2 slabs exhibit similar conversion efficiencies of lithium niobate, but within propagation lengths >100-fold shorter at telecom wavelengths. Furthermore, along the extraordinary axis, we achieve broadly tunable SHG from 3R-MoS2 in a waveguide geometry, revealing the coherence length in such structure for the first time. We characterize the full refractive index spectrum and quantify both birefringence components in anisotropic 3R-MoS2 crystals with near-field nano-imaging. Empowered with these data we assess the intrinsic limits of the conversion efficiency and nonlinear optical processes in 3R-MoS2 attainable in waveguide geometries. Our analysis highlights the potential of 3R-stacked TMDs for integrated photonics, providing critical parameters for designing highly efficient on-chip nonlinear optical devices including periodically poled structures, resonators, compact optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers, and optical quantum circuits

Published in 1992, Mia Couto's novel Terra Sonâmbula is marked by the use of neologisms, formed through non-morphological processes as blending and morphological processes as affixation and composition. Mia Couto's creativity is mirrored in the new words that he has invented, through creative processes allowed by the word formation rules of Portuguese. Several studies reflect on the translation of Mia Couto's works into Indo-European languages, such as French and English, but few on the translation into Chinese. The Chinese translation of neologisms is challenging due to the scarcity of equivalent mechanisms to form new words. The present work aims to analyze the Chinese translation of neologisms in Terra Sonâmbula, published in Taiwan, starting from the linguistic differences between Portuguese and Chinese and exploring the transformations underwent by the creative processes during the translation, as well as the differences in the reading experience between Portuguese and Chinese readers. After a brief introduction to the dissertation and the Status Quaestionis, it was made a comparative analysis between Portuguese and Chinese in morphological terms. Then, it was analyzed the translation of neologisms formed by diverse morphological or non-morphological processes, with emphasis on blending words, the most frequent neologisms in Terra Sonâmbula, showing that the translation has preserved, in most cases, the semantic properties of the neologisms, but lost the creative processes due to differences between Portuguese and Chinese. Thus, the images created by the author are accessible to the readers of the translation, but the way in which the images are represented and coordinated is defined by the translator, not according to the readers' own decoding and interpretation of the new words, hence the difference on the reading experience between the readers of Portuguese and Chinese. At the end, we present in the Annexes attached an interview to the translator Jin Xinyi and a corpus with the neologisms identified in Terra Sonâmbula, as well as the respective translation

M.Phil.Although illicit drug use, dependency and related social problems have intensified in Yunnan, the issues, particularly the experiences of women who abuse drugs have remained largely unexamined. This study was conducted to fill this knowledge gap and to have the voices of this group of women being heard. This study aims to examining the experiences and self-perception of Chinese female drug abusers in Kunming, Yunnan. The study employs qualitative method of in-depth interview to understand the life stories of 16 women at H rehabilitation centre, two of their husbands and three centre staffs, and to explore the experiences and meanings embedded in their narratives through a meticulous process of thematic analysis.Findings revealed the ‘ignorant and trendy’ theme from the informants’ narratives about their early experience with heroin. At the time of their onset for drug use, peoples were ignorant about abusing drugs and susceptible to its trendiness. Regarding their rehabilitation experiences, the ‘prison-like and inhuman’ theme emerged when sharing of their experiences in the compulsory rehabilitation institutions. When came to their experiences at the H rehabilitation centre, even though it was claimed to be a voluntary rehabilitation program, the informants’ still regarded the experience as ‘isolated and disciplined recovery’. The findings revealed the tough journey that informants had gone through in the past years.Regarding their experiences with significant others during the rehabilitation process, findings indicated a process of ‘from disconnection to reconnection’. Women drug abusers revealed that drug taking disconnecting them from family and the rehabilitation process reconnecting them to family. The close mother–daughter connection, the tense father–daughter connection and the power struggling in couple relationship were themes uncovered. To the women drug abusers, these relationships played a vital role in their drug abuse and recovery journey.Although the women drug abusers were decisive to quit drug, they would still carry the label of ‘social problem’. Despite that they disagreed to this label, the social discourses and the negative perception of others constructed the dominant theme of ‘drug addicts forever’, which became the unmoved self-perception of the informants. The findings supported the ‘self-in-relation’ theory, which highlighted the importance of connection in women’s growth and development. Findings also revealed the specific meanings of relationship for Chinese female drug abusers in the context of Chinese familism. With reference to the findings, the thesis discussed how the reform and opening-up policy, the drug policy, as well as the dominant discourses impacting on the experiences and interpretations of female drug abusers. Lastly, the study discussed the implications of findings and proposed directions for practice, policy and future research. Liu, Xinyi."December 2019."Thesis M.Phil. Now, China has become one of the countries with the fastest aging rate, with the increase of life expectancy, the decline of the fertility rate, and the increasing proportion of senior people in the population. As more and more young people go to big cities to work and live, there are more and more empty nesters in China, and correspondingly, more and more old drifters in big cities. The level of economic development has brought a much better material life for people. However, a person's wellness is not only physical wellness. Emotional wellness and other aspects of wellness is equally important. But for now, most of seniors in China could not master the use of the Internet. They are also gradually disconnected from the outside world. For seniors who live in first-class cities as the old drifters, they are not familiar with the surrounding environment, also does not have many native friends. Their life is confined to the circle of the park, family, grandchildren's school and market. For seniors who live in second, third class cities and outside is also the same. Their life also lacks a variety of recreation activities. While most of the Chinese market of recreation and leisure industry and their services are provided for young people. Most of seniors never use these services, and seniors' depressed psychology makes them not willing to try as well. Their life has been rich in goods, but not in the spiritual or emotional aspects. Therefore, based on the social background and consuming market background in China, the author wants to increase the happiness index of China's seniors through the service design. In this project, the author hopes to set up a bridge between the existing recreation and leisure industry and seniors, to help them to enjoy their life, gain more happiness in a simple, direct, efficient way
